The Short Answer on Later vs Spreadcast
Later and Spreadcast do different jobs. Later gives you a calendar, a visual Instagram grid, a media library and a link in bio page, and you fill it with photos and videos you already have. Spreadcast makes the posts: it watches your app's public App Store listing, designs a post when something happens there and publishes it for you.
Pick Spreadcast if you are an app founder or indie developer who ships regularly and posts nothing, because nobody has time to open a design tool after every release. You paste your App Store link once at the start page. From then on Spreadcast designs a post for each app update, 5 star review and rating milestone and publishes it on up to 8 networks, Bluesky included. Pro is $29 a month flat with design, captions and publishing included, and the free plan drafts every post. If that sounds like your week, the article on why your scheduler is not the reason your feed is empty explains the gap in more detail.
Pick Later if you have a steady supply of content and want to arrange it well. Creators, shops, restaurants and social media managers fit that description, and for them Later is hard to beat on Instagram.
What the Later Social Media Scheduler Does Today
Later Social schedules to eight networks. Later's pricing page lists Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Snapchat, and it covers feed posts, carousels, Stories, Reels, Pins and YouTube Shorts. X is gone: Later's help center says support for X ended on August 28, 2025. Bluesky is not on the list. For the free ways to queue Threads without Later, see how to schedule Threads posts.
The part people love is the visual planner. You drag media onto a calendar, preview the Instagram grid, and let Later publish automatically to business and creator accounts. Every plan also includes the media library, a Canva export, saved captions and mobile apps for iOS and Android, according to the same pricing page.
Later's Link in Bio turns your Instagram or TikTok bio link into a small landing page with buttons, featured banners, an email sign up form and clickable copies of your posts. Analytics run from 3 months of history on Starter to 2 years on Scale. Growth and Scale add a social inbox for comments and direct messages, approval workflows and tools for collecting customer photos.
The AI in Later writes text. The pricing page describes AI credits as powering a caption writer and an ideas tool, where 1 credit returns 3 ideas or 1 caption. It does not design the image or decide what to post about, so the creative work stays with you.
Later Pricing and Spreadcast Pricing in October 2026
Later prices below are the monthly billing prices in US dollars from Later's pricing page, with the yearly billing price in parentheses. The Later free plan does not appear on that page, so its limits come from Later's plan availability reference. Later Starter is $4 a month less than Spreadcast Pro ($25 against $29). The $25 buys a calendar for posts you make yourself. The $29 includes the posts: designed, captioned and published.
| Plan | Price | Profiles and seats | Posting limit | What stands out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spreadcast Free | $0 | 1 app | Every post drafted for you to download | Spreadcast designs a post for each update, review and milestone. Posts carry a small Spreadcast mark, and publishing for you starts on Pro |
| Spreadcast Pro | $29 a month flat, with design, captions and publishing included | 1 app, all 8 networks | Published for you | Spreadcast designs each post and writes a caption for each network. Clean posts, full autopilot or one tap approval |
| Spreadcast Studio | $79 a month | 5 apps, 3 seats | Published for you | Each app keeps its own brand. Five social sets on Later Growth come to $95 a month ($50 plus 3 extra sets at $15 each) |
| Later Free | $0 | 1 social set, 1 user | 12 posts per profile a month | No Instagram carousels or Stories, no AI credits, no platform analytics, Later branding on the Link in Bio page |
| Later Starter | $25 a month ($18.75 billed yearly) | 1 social set (8 profiles), 1 user | 30 posts per profile a month | 5 AI credits, 3 months of analytics, no extra sets or users can be added |
| Later Growth | $50 a month ($37.50 billed yearly) | 2 social sets (16 profiles), 2 users | 180 posts per profile a month | 50 AI credits, 1 year of analytics, approvals, social inbox, extra set for $15 a month |
| Later Scale | $110 a month ($82.50 billed yearly) | 6 social sets (48 profiles), 4 users | Unlimited posts | 100 AI credits, 2 years of analytics, custom reports, competitor benchmarking |
Later prices and limits checked on October 11, 2026. Later bills in US dollars and adds tax. Each paid Later plan starts with a 14 day free trial. Spreadcast prices are on our pricing page.
Later Plan Limits People Hit, Plan by Plan
The price table shows what each plan costs. This one shows where each plan stops. The rows come from Later's plan availability reference as it read on October 11, 2026, and the yearly totals are the yearly billing rate on the pricing page times 12.
| Limit | Free | Starter | Growth | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cost for a year, billed yearly | $0 | $225 (12 times $18.75) | $450 (12 times $37.50) | $990 (12 times $82.50) |
| Posts per profile a month | 12 | 30 | 180 | Unlimited |
| Instagram carousels and Stories | Not included | Included, up to 10 items in a carousel | Included | Included |
| Instagram first comment and tags | Not included | Included for auto published posts | Included, plus Shop product tags | Included, plus Shop product tags |
| Photo and video file size | 5 MB and 25 MB | 20 MB and 512 MB | 100 MB and 1.5 GB | 100 MB and 1.5 GB |
| AI credits a month | 0 | 5 | 50 | 100 |
| Instagram analytics history | No platform analytics | 3 months | 1 year | 2 years |
| Approvals and social inbox | Not included | Not included | Included | Included |
| Extra social sets and users | Not sold | Not sold | $15 and $5 a month each | $15 and $5 a month each |
| Link in Bio page | Included, with Later branding | Included, without it | Included, without it | Included, without it |
Later counts a post when you schedule it, and a saved draft counts too. Later's post count guide says the count resets on the 1st of each month at 12:00 AM UTC, whatever your billing date, and that Instagram Stories count toward the Instagram total.
Is Later Free? The Free Plan and the 14 Day Trial in Detail
Later is free at a small scale, if you know where to look. The three plans on the pricing page each start with a 14 day free trial, and the free plan itself is documented only in the help center. Later's plan guide describes it as a plan for creators who schedule a limited number of posts each month.
What you get is one social set, which means one profile on each of Later's eight networks, for one user. Each profile can schedule 12 posts a month. The visual Instagram planner, the Canva and Dropbox integrations and a Link in Bio page with Later branding are all included.
What you give up is longer. The free plan leaves out Instagram carousels and Stories, Facebook Reels, first comments, user and location tags, hashtag suggestions, best time to post, AI credits and platform analytics. Photos are capped at 5 MB and videos at 25 MB, and YouTube Shorts are limited to one a month.
Twelve posts a month sounds workable for an app that ships twice a month. It shrinks once you know how Later counts: per profile, at the moment you schedule, with drafts included. The post count guide offers one way to raise it without paying, a referral program that adds 10 posts a month for you and for each friend who signs up and publishes a post.
The trial and the free plan connect at the end. If you cancel a paid plan or a trial runs out, Later's cancellation guide says the account goes back to the free plan when the billing cycle ends.
Spreadcast's free plan covers the other half of the job. It does not publish, and it makes the thing Later's free plan needs from you: a designed post for every update, 5 star review and rating milestone of 1 app, ready to download with a small Spreadcast mark.
Why People Search for Later Alternatives
These are the limits that come up most often, each one checked against Later's own pages as of October 2026.
Post Counts Are per Profile, per Month
Starter allows 30 scheduled posts per profile each month and Growth allows 180. Later's plan reference adds that drafts count toward the total. A daily Instagram account fits inside Starter with nothing to spare.
The Later Free Plan Is Small
Later still has a free plan, with 12 posts per profile a month, no carousels, no Stories and no analytics. The plan guide limits the free calendar to 2 weeks back and 2 weeks ahead.
No X and No Bluesky
Later removed X in August 2025. If your users and fellow developers talk on X or Bluesky, you need a second tool for those two.
Starter Cannot Grow
Extra social sets and users are sold on Growth and Scale only, as the pricing page states, so a second Instagram account means doubling your bill to Growth. Later's pages disagree about AI credits: the pricing page says Starter cannot buy more, while the credits guide sells 100 extra credits for $5 a month on current paid plans.
You Still Make Every Post
This is the one Later cannot fix by changing a limit. A scheduler is useful once the image and caption exist. For a two person app team, making them is the step that never happens. Spreadcast does that step: it designs the post, writes the caption and publishes it for you.
Later vs Spreadcast, Feature by Feature
Later facts come from Later's pricing page and help center, opened on October 11, 2026. The rows start with the work of making a post, because that is where the two tools differ most.
| Later | Spreadcast | |
|---|---|---|
| Who makes the post | You upload photos and videos or export them from Canva. AI credits help with captions and ideas | Spreadcast designs the image from your app icon, screenshots and colors, writes a caption for each network and publishes it for you |
| What starts a post | You, when you open the calendar | A new app version, a new 5 star review, a rating milestone, or a week with no update |
| Your time per post | You make or pick the media, write the caption and place it on the calendar | One tap to approve, or nothing on full autopilot |
| Networks | Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Snapchat. No X since August 2025 | Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram and Discord, plus YouTube for video posts, all included in the one price |
| Price for 8 networks | $25 a month, or $18.75 billed yearly, on Starter: 1 social set of 8 profiles, 30 posts per profile a month. You still make every post | $29 a month flat on Pro for 1 app. That is $4 more than Later Starter billed monthly, with design, captions and publishing to all 8 networks included |
| Setup | Connect your profiles, upload media to the library and fill the calendar | Paste one App Store link and connect your accounts. No SDK, no code and no access to your developer account |
| Built for | Creators, brands and social media managers who plan a feed, with Instagram at the center | App founders, indie developers and small studios with an app on the App Store |
| Free plan | 12 posts per profile a month, published for you, with reduced features | 1 app. Spreadcast designs every post, ready to download with a small Spreadcast mark. Publishing for you starts on Pro |
| Inbox and approvals | Social inbox, approval workflows and outside reviewer links on Growth and Scale | Approve first mode (every post waits for one tap) or full autopilot. You reply to comments inside each network |
| Post formats | Photos, carousels, Stories, Reels, video, Pins and YouTube Shorts. Later wins here | Still image posts at 1080 by 1350 with typeset text. Keep Later for Reels and Stories |
| Visual Instagram grid planner | Yes, on every plan including Free | A calendar where each post takes the next free slot and you can drag it to another day. Keep Later if you plan the grid by eye |
| Link in bio page | Yes, with up to 5 links per Instagram post and email collection | Not part of Spreadcast. Later's free plan includes a Link in Bio page, so the two pair well |
| Analytics | 3 months to 2 years of history depending on plan, with custom reports on Scale | Basic post stats, next to each network's own insights. Keep Later if you need reports |
| Works without an app | Yes, for any kind of account | It is built for apps on the App Store. Google Play is next on the list and not available yet |
Later Features Next to Spreadcast, Area by Area
Six areas make up most of what Later sells. Each card says what Later does, from its own pages as of October 2026, and what Spreadcast does for an app founder in the same area.
Scheduling and Auto Publish
Later publishes by itself to Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn, Threads and Snapchat. For Instagram and TikTok, Later's publishing guide adds a second mode: a push notification that you finish by hand in the app. Auto publish on Instagram needs a business or creator profile, because Meta's publishing documentation opens the API to professional accounts only. Spreadcast publishes each post within minutes of its slot on all 8 of its networks, after one tap of approval or on full autopilot.
Visual Planner and Media Library
The planner shows your next Instagram posts as a grid before they go live, on every plan. Media arrives from your uploads, Dropbox or Canva. Later's Canva integration is included on every current plan, Free too, and it exports one design at a time into the library. Spreadcast has no library to fill. It builds each image from your app icon, your screenshots and colors read from the icon, then puts it in the next free calendar slot.
Link in Bio
Each social set gets one Link in Bio page with buttons, banners, email collection and clickable copies of your posts. From Starter up the page drops the Later branding and adds custom UTM values and SEO data, according to the plan reference. Spreadcast does not build a bio page. An app founder who wants one can keep Later's free plan for it and pay for nothing twice.
Analytics and Reports
History depends on the plan, and the reference guide adds conditions that matter in practice. Instagram analytics need a business or creator profile, some sections need 100 followers, Pinterest analytics cover only Pins scheduled through Later, and custom reports are a Scale feature. Spreadcast shows basic post stats and leaves the depth to each network's own insights.
AI Caption Writer and Ideas
Later's AI produces text. Its credits guide charges 1 credit for a caption and 1 credit for three content ideas, from a monthly pool of 5 credits on Starter, 50 on Growth and 100 on Scale, and the plan reference lists the caption writer as English only. Spreadcast writes a caption for each network with every post it designs, as part of the plan.
Approvals, Inbox and Seats
Growth and Scale add an approval workflow, review links for people outside the team that expire after 7 days, and an inbox for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok comments, with direct messages for Instagram and Facebook. Starter has one user and none of the three. Spreadcast keeps approval to one screen: in approve first mode every post waits for one tap. Studio adds 3 seats across 5 apps.
How to Use Later to Schedule Instagram Posts and Stories
If you stay with Later, or try it next to Spreadcast, this is the route from an empty calendar to a scheduled Instagram post. The steps follow Later's guide to scheduling Instagram posts and its guide to Stories as they read on October 17, 2026. A single photo post can be scheduled on every plan, Free included.
- Step 1
Connect a Business or Creator Profile
Later asks for an Instagram business or creator profile before it schedules anything for Instagram. A personal profile can still be planned, but Later's mobile app guide says personal profile posts must be published through a push notification, which you finish in the Instagram app.
- Step 2
Start a Post From the Calendar
On desktop, select your Instagram profile at the top of the Calendar and choose Create Post in the left sidebar, or drag a picture from the media library onto a time slot. In the iOS or Android app, open the Schedule tab and tap the create post icon at the bottom right, or press and hold an open slot in the Calendar view.
- Step 3
Pick Auto Publish or a Notification, Then a Time
Auto Publish posts by itself at the time you choose. Notification publishing sends the post to your phone at that time instead, and it only appears as an option once a mobile device is set up with Later. Choose the date and time in the same step.
- Step 4
Add the Picture and the Caption
Add media from the library or upload it, then use Edit Image to fix any crop that breaks Instagram's rules, which Later marks in red. Write the caption, or insert a saved caption or one from the AI Caption Writer. Keep hashtags short: Later's guide notes that since December 18, 2025 Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags on a post or a Reel.
- Step 5
Set the Extras and Schedule
Under More Options you can add a first comment, a link for your Link in Bio page, user and location tags, up to 3 collaborators and an Instagram Shop product tag. Some of these work with Auto Publish only. Then select Schedule Post, or Save as Draft. Remember that a draft counts toward the monthly post limit too.
- Step 6
Schedule a Story From Desktop
Stories need a current paid plan and are scheduled on desktop only, one Instagram profile at a time. Each Story board counts as 1 post. Auto Publish works for business profiles only, so a creator profile gets a notification, and any Story with stickers, polls, music, links or tags goes by notification as well. Videos must be 60 seconds or shorter.
Later Link in Bio: What Is Free and What Each Plan Adds
Yes, Later's Link in Bio is free. Every plan includes it, the free plan too, and Later's feature guide for Link in Bio shows that the free page already has unlimited buttons, links on your Instagram and TikTok posts, themes, colors and fonts. Paying for Starter at $25 a month mostly removes the Later banner and lengthens the click history. The Later vs Planoly comparison sets this against Planoly's Creator Store.
| Feature | Free | Starter | Growth and Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buttons and social links | Unlimited buttons, 1 link per social network | Same | Same |
| Links on Instagram posts | 1 to 5 links on each post | Same | Same |
| TikTok feed with links | Included | Included | Included |
| Design | Premade themes, colors, fonts, button styles, a featured YouTube video and button groups | Same | Same |
| Click data | Up to 3 months | Up to 1 year | Up to 1 year |
| Later branding | A Later banner on the public page | No banner | No banner |
| Tracking | Google Analytics with default UTM values | Custom UTM values and SEO settings | Custom UTM values and SEO settings |
| Page views by location and Pinterest clicks | Not included | Not included | Included |
Checked on Later's help center on October 17, 2026. Spreadcast does not make a bio page, so an app founder can keep Later's free Link in Bio and let Spreadcast design and publish the posts.
Later App for Instagram on iPhone, Android and Desktop
Later has apps for iOS and Android and a desktop version in the browser, and the three do not do the same things. The iOS app holds 4.6 stars from about 2,500 ratings on the US App Store as of October 17, 2026. Later's mobile app guide adds that the Android app is not yet available in every country.
The apps cover the media library, scheduling for every supported network, the Visual Instagram Planner and notification publishing. Some work stays on desktop: analytics, collecting customer media, the conversations inbox and account and billing settings are missing from the apps, and Stories are scheduled on desktop only. New posts cannot be created from the mobile Calendar view, only from the create button, and the free plan shows 2 weeks of posts in each direction where paid plans show up to a year.
The two phone apps differ too. On iOS you can add Instagram, TikTok and Facebook profiles and set up Link in Bio. On Android you can add Instagram and Facebook, and Link in Bio is set up on the web instead. Pinterest and LinkedIn profiles are added on desktop in both cases.
Spreadcast has no app to install. It runs in the browser, and in approve first mode the work on any screen is one tap per post.
How Spreadcast Works as a Later App Alternative
The setup takes one link. There is no SDK, no code and no access to your developer account.
- Step 1
Paste Your App Store Link
Spreadcast reads the public listing: icon, screenshots, description, version history, ratings and reviews. Colors come from the icon, and if your app has a website, the logo and fonts come from there.
- Step 2
Connect Your Social Accounts Once
Pick from Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram and Discord, plus YouTube for video posts. Each network gets its own caption, so the LinkedIn text does not read like a pasted tweet.
- Step 3
Spreadcast Checks the Listing Every Day
A new version becomes an app update announcement with the release notes cut to two or three points and your own screenshot. See what good ones look like in these app update announcement examples.
- Step 4
Reviews and Milestones Become Posts Too
A post that shows only your rating can go out by itself. A post that quotes a reviewer's words waits for your approval, because Apple's ratings and reviews guidance allows reviews in marketing "only if permission from the reviewer is granted". Reaching 1,000 ratings or a 4.8 average becomes a thank you post.
- Step 5
Approve With One Tap or Let It Run
Choose approve first or full autopilot. Each post takes the next free slot on the calendar, and in a week with no update Spreadcast drafts a post about one of your app's features so the feed does not go silent.
A Worked Week: Your App Ships Version 2.4 on Tuesday
An invented example: a habit tracker ships version 2.4 on Tuesday with a new widget, and a 5 star review arrives on Thursday. The Later column follows Later's help center on the Starter plan. The Spreadcast column is what happens on Pro in approve first mode.
| Step | With Spreadcast | With Later |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday: 2.4 goes live | You do nothing. Spreadcast's daily check of the public listing finds the new version | Later has no way to know. The post starts when you remember it |
| Making the image | Spreadcast designs a 1080 by 1350 post from your icon and a real screenshot, with the release notes cut to two or three points | You open Canva or another editor, design the image and send it to the media library. The Canva integration exports one design at a time |
| Writing the captions | Spreadcast writes a caption for each of the 8 networks | You write them, or spend AI credits. One caption costs 1 credit and Starter has 5 a month, so six separate captions do not fit |
| Scheduling | The post takes the next free slot on the calendar. You tap approve once | You pick the profiles, set a time and schedule. Each of the six profiles uses 1 of its 30 posts for the month |
| Bluesky and Telegram | Published with the other six networks | Later publishes to neither. You post by hand or keep a second tool |
| Thursday: a 5 star review | Spreadcast drafts a review post. It quotes the reviewer, so it waits for your approval | You notice the review yourself, design a quote image and repeat the steps above |
| The week after, no release | Spreadcast drafts a post about one of the app's features, so the feed keeps moving | The calendar stays empty until you make something |
The app is invented. Six profiles are the networks both tools cover: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, Pinterest and LinkedIn. On full autopilot the approval taps go away too, except for posts that quote a reviewer's words, which always wait for you.
What 8 Networks Cost on Later Against Spreadcast Pro
Later counts to 8 and Spreadcast to 11, and the two lists differ. A Later Starter social set holds one profile each on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube and Snapchat for $25 a month. Spreadcast Pro publishes to Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram and Discord, plus YouTube for video posts, for $29 a month flat. Seven networks overlap.
To cover Bluesky from Later you need a second tool. Buffer's free plan connects up to 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel, so the cheapest route is $25 plus $0, in two tools. With that channel on Buffer Essentials at $6 billed monthly, the sum is $25 plus $6, or $31 a month. Spreadcast Pro is $29 for all 8 in one place.
Yearly billing changes the first number. Later Starter billed yearly works out to $18.75 a month, which is $10.25 less than Spreadcast Pro. The $10.25 pays for the work: Later's price covers a calendar for 30 posts per profile that you design and caption yourself, and Spreadcast's covers the design, a caption for each network and the publishing.
A second app turns the comparison around. Later Starter cannot add a social set, so two apps mean Growth at $50 a month. Five apps mean Growth with three extra sets, $95 a month, or Scale at $110 with six sets. Spreadcast Studio covers 5 apps and 3 seats for $79 a month, and each app keeps its own brand.
None of these sums includes your time. The article on the real cost of designing social posts by hand puts numbers on that side of the bill.
Later Pros and Cons
Each line can be checked on Later's pricing page or in its help center, as of October 2026.
| Area | Later pros | Later cons |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram planning | A visual grid planner on every plan, fed by drag and drop from the media library | The grid helps only once you have images to put in it |
| Networks | Eight networks in one social set, Snapchat and YouTube Shorts among them | No X since August 28, 2025, and no Bluesky |
| Price | Starter is $25 a month, or $18.75 billed yearly, with a 14 day trial | Starter stops at 30 posts per profile, and a second social set means Growth at $50 |
| Free plan | A free plan exists, with the planner and a Link in Bio page | 12 posts per profile, no carousels, Stories or analytics, and the pricing page does not show it |
| Link in bio | Included on every plan, with email collection | Later branding stays on the page until you pay for Starter |
| AI | A caption writer and an ideas tool on every paid plan | Text only, captions in English only, and 5 credits a month on Starter |
| Teams | Approvals, outside review links and a social inbox | All three start on Growth |
| Leaving | A cancelled plan keeps its features until the billing cycle ends | Desktop downloads are one file at a time, at medium resolution |
Later vs Buffer, Hootsuite, Metricool, Planoly and Sprout Social in Short
These five comparisons come up most in search. All six tools schedule posts you have already made, which is the step Spreadcast does for you. Prices are from each vendor's pricing page on October 11, 2026.
Later vs Buffer
Buffer wins on the free plan and on networks: 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each for $0, with X and Bluesky both on its list. Paid, it charges $6 a channel billed monthly, so three channels cost $18 against Later's $25 for a set of eight. Later wins when the Instagram grid and the Link in Bio page are how you work.
Later vs Hootsuite
These two serve different budgets. Hootsuite's plans page starts at $99 per user a month, billed annually, for up to 10 social accounts, and has no free plan. That is close to four times Later Starter. Hootsuite suits a larger team that wants an inbox, listening and benchmarking in one suite. Our Hootsuite comparison has more.
Later vs Metricool
Metricool's pricing page has a free plan with 1 brand and 20 scheduled posts a month, and its Starter plan covers up to 5 brands from $25 a month billed monthly. Later charges the same $25 for one social set. Choose Metricool for several brands and for reports, and Later for one brand planned by eye. See the Metricool comparison.
Later vs Planoly
Planoly is the closest match. Planoly's pricing page lists Starter at $16 a month billed monthly, or $14 billed yearly, for 1 social set with unlimited uploads, and its set includes X. Later Starter at $25 billed monthly costs $9 more and gives you Snapchat, analytics history and, from Growth, a social inbox. If the 30 post cap is your only complaint about Later, Planoly removes it for less.
Later vs Sprout Social
Sprout Social is priced per person. Sprout's pricing page starts at $99 per seat a month on Essentials billed monthly, or $79 billed yearly, for 5 social profiles, and Standard at $199 per seat adds a shared inbox and keyword and location monitoring, after a 30 day trial. Later Starter is $25 for a set of 8 profiles. Pick Sprout for a team that answers customers and listens for its brand, and Later for one person planning a feed.
How to Cancel Later and Switch to Spreadcast
You can start Spreadcast before you touch your Later plan, so the feed never has a gap. The cancellation details come from Later's cancellation guide.
- Step 1
Paste Your App Store Link First
Start on the free Spreadcast plan while Later is still running. You see the drafts it makes from your listing and can judge them before anything changes.
- Step 2
Decide What Later Still Does for You
If you plan your own photos, Reels or Stories in the grid, keep Later for those. If the Link in Bio page is all you would miss, the free plan keeps one, with Later branding on it.
- Step 3
Save Your Analytics and Media
Analytics above the free level go as soon as the paid plan ends, so export what you need first. Instagram analytics export as a CSV file from Starter up. For media, Later's download guide offers one file at a time on desktop, or many at once at full resolution in the iOS app.
- Step 4
Cancel Where You Signed Up
On desktop, open Settings, then Subscription, and select Cancel Plan. A plan bought in Later's iOS app is cancelled in that app under Account, then Your Subscription. Yearly plans are billed once a year and renew automatically, so check the renewal date before it passes.
- Step 5
Know What Happens When the Cycle Ends
Paid features stay until the billing cycle ends. Then the account drops to the free plan, scheduled posts above the free allowance do not publish, and Later asks you to remove extra users and social sets.
- Step 6
Turn On Publishing in Spreadcast
Connect your social accounts on Pro and choose approve first or full autopilot. The next update, review or milestone becomes a post without you opening a calendar.
When Later Is the Better Choice
Choose Later when the look of your Instagram grid is part of the product. Fashion, food, travel, interiors and creator accounts need to see nine squares side by side before anything goes live, and Later's planner is built for exactly that.
Video is the second reason. Reels, Stories, TikTok videos and YouTube Shorts are all schedulable in Later. Spreadcast makes still image posts.
A bio link that sells things is the third. A shop that tags products and sends followers from a post to a product page gets real value from Link in Bio. The same goes for teams that need a shared inbox, client approvals or 2 years of analytics.
Finally, Later or any other scheduler is the answer when you do not have an app on the App Store, because Spreadcast works from the listing. If you are comparing schedulers and already make your own posts, the roundup of Later alternatives and the Buffer comparison are good places to start. For an app team none of this is either or: keep Later for the grid, the videos and the one off posts, and let Spreadcast run the recurring app posts.
Can You Use Later and Spreadcast Together?
Yes, and for an app team it is the sensible setup. The two tools do different jobs: Spreadcast designs and publishes the posts about the app, and Later arranges everything else.
The simple split is by account. Let Spreadcast publish app updates, review posts and milestone posts to Bluesky, LinkedIn and Threads, where Later either does not publish or where a grid does not matter. Keep Instagram in Later so your founder photos, behind the scenes clips and Reels sit in one planned grid.
If you want the app posts in the Instagram grid too, use the free Spreadcast plan as a design source. Spreadcast designs the post, and you download it, upload it to Later's media library and place it by hand. Free drafts carry a small Spreadcast mark, and the clean version is part of Pro.
One caution: do not connect the same Instagram account to both tools on autopilot without looking at the calendars. Two tools that both think 9 am is the best slot will post back to back.
If Buffer is the other tool on your list, Buffer vs Later compares the two plan by plan, with costs for real setups.
A Quick Way to Decide
You Have an App and No Content
Pick Spreadcast. The free plan designs every post from your own listing, so you can judge the designs before you pay. Pro is $29 a month flat, with design, captions and publishing to 8 networks included. More on who this suits is on the page for indie hackers.
You Have Content and Need Order
Pick Later. Start with Starter at $25 a month if 30 posts per profile covers you, and move to Growth when you need a second brand or approvals.
You Want Free Scheduling Only
Look at Meta Business Suite, which Meta says is free on desktop and mobile for Facebook and Instagram, or Buffer's free plan with up to 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a free Later alternative?
Several. If you have an app on the App Store, start with Spreadcast's free plan: it designs a post for every update, 5 star review and rating milestone, ready to download. For scheduling posts you made yourself, Meta Business Suite is free and schedules posts, Stories and Reels to Facebook and Instagram, and Buffer's free plan connects up to 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel. The best Later alternatives roundup compares the free plans side by side.
Does Later still have a free plan?
Yes, as of October 2026, although the pricing page only shows the three paid plans. Later's plan guide describes a Free plan with limited scheduling, a Link in Bio page and a calendar limited to 2 weeks in each direction. The plan reference sets it at 12 posts per profile a month with no carousels, Stories or AI credits.
How much does Later cost in 2026?
On Later's pricing page Starter is $25 a month, Growth is $50 a month and Scale is $110 a month when billed monthly. Yearly billing takes 25 percent off, which works out to $18.75, $37.50 and $82.50 a month. Extra social sets cost $15 a month and extra users $5 a month on Growth and Scale. For comparison, Spreadcast Pro is $29 a month flat. That is $4 more than Later Starter billed monthly, and it includes designing the posts, writing the captions and publishing them on 8 networks.
Does Later post to X (Twitter)?
No. Later's help center says it stopped supporting X on August 28, 2025, and posts scheduled for after that date did not publish. Spreadcast does not post to X either. It publishes to Bluesky and seven other networks.
What is the best Later alternative for Instagram?
It depends on what you were using Later for. If you run an app and the real problem is that you have no posts to put in the grid, Spreadcast: it designs them from your App Store listing as 1080 by 1350 still images and publishes them to Instagram and seven other networks for you. If you want the visual grid at a lower price, look at the other planners in the Later alternatives roundup.
Can Spreadcast replace Later completely?
Yes, if your social accounts exist to talk about your app. Spreadcast designs and publishes the update announcements, review posts, rating milestones and a feature post in quiet weeks. Keep Later beside it if you also plan your own photos in a grid, publish video, or use its link in bio page and reports. Shops and creators need that second list. An app team often needs only the first.
Does Spreadcast work with Android apps on Google Play?
Not yet. Spreadcast reads App Store listings today, and Google Play is next on the list. If your app is on both stores, the App Store link is enough to start, since the posts are about the app and its updates.
What should an app post about besides updates?
Reviews, rating milestones and single features all work, and they are the three things Spreadcast drafts for you. For a wider plan, read the guide on how to promote an app on social media, and before you quote a review check the App Store marketing guidelines summary.
