Buffer vs Later: The Short Answer
Buffer is the better pick if you post to a few channels, need X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Google Business Profile or Substack, or want a free plan that publishes. Its free plan covers 3 channels, and paid plans cost $6 per channel a month, or $5 on yearly billing, per Buffer's pricing file. Later is the better pick if one brand posts to many networks, if Instagram and TikTok carry your marketing, or if a team needs an inbox, approvals and longer reports. Its Starter plan costs $25 a month, or $18.75 billed yearly, for one profile on each of 8 networks, per Later's pricing page. Both pages were read on October 19, 2026.
The two bills grow in different ways. Buffer charges for every connected account, so 3 channels cost $18 a month and 8 cost $48. Later charges for a social set, which holds one Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube and Snapchat profile each, so the eighth network costs the same as the first. Later then limits how often you post: 30 scheduled posts per profile a month on Starter and 180 on Growth. Buffer's paid plans have no monthly post cap. That single difference decides most real cases, as the worked setups below show.
On features the split is just as clear. Later is the visual one: a drag and drop Instagram grid planner on every plan, a clickable Link in Bio feed, an inbox for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok from Growth, and competitor benchmarking on Scale. Buffer is the broad and open one: 12 networks, an AI assistant with no usage cap on every plan, a comment inbox for 10 networks even on Free, CSV bulk upload, a public API on every plan and an MCP connection for Claude and ChatGPT. Later documents no public API and no MCP connector, and its supported platforms article lists Zapier among the services it does not support.
A word on who is writing. We make Spreadcast, which designs and publishes posts for apps on the App Store. Neither Buffer nor Later works with us, both names are trademarks of their owners, and every fact about them here comes from their own pages. Spreadcast gets one section near the end for readers who have an app. If you came for one tool alone, our pages on Buffer and Later go deeper on each.
Key Takeaways
Six facts that settle most Buffer vs Later choices, each sourced in the sections below.
Buffer Is Cheaper for a Few Channels
Up to 4 channels on Buffer Essentials cost $24 a month or less, under Later Starter's $25. On yearly billing the line moves to 3 channels: $15 against $18.75.
Later Is Cheaper for Many Networks on One Brand
Six networks for one brand cost $36 a month on Buffer and $25 on Later Starter, as long as no profile needs more than 30 posts in a month.
Later Caps Posts, Buffer Caps Slots
Later counts posts per profile per month, drafts and Stories included. Buffer Free holds 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time and refills as they publish. Paid Buffer plans have no monthly cap.
Buffer Reaches More Networks
Buffer publishes to X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Google Business Profile and Substack. Later has none of the five, and adds Snapchat, which Buffer lacks.
Later Plans the Grid, Buffer Previews It
Later's Visual Instagram Planner lets you drag posts into a new order on every plan. Buffer's Grid Preview shows the grid for Instagram professional accounts.
Teams Split by Size
A small team pays less on Later Growth, which includes 2 users, an inbox and approvals for $50. Buffer Team has unlimited users, so it wins when people far outnumber accounts: 20 people on 10 channels cost $120 on Buffer and $140 on Later.

Buffer vs Later Pricing: Every Plan, Monthly and Yearly
Buffer has three plans and Later has four, counting the free plans. Buffer's rates are per channel for your first 10 channels. Later's are per account, and its page opens on the yearly price, so we read the code behind its billing switch to confirm the monthly figures.
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly | Users | Accounts | What the plan adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buffer Free | $0 | $0 | 1 | Up to 3 channels | Queue and calendar, 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, 100 ideas, AI Assistant, 30 days of Insights, comment inbox, API with 3,000 requests a month |
| Buffer Essentials | $6 per channel | $5 per channel a month | 1 | As many as you pay for | Unlimited scheduling, full analytics history, reports, first comment, hashtag manager, channel groups, custom video covers |
| Buffer Team | $12 per channel | $10 per channel a month | Unlimited | As many as you pay for | Everything in Essentials plus approval workflows, access levels per channel and branded reports |
| Later Free | $0 | $0 | 1 | 1 social set (8 profiles) | 12 posts per profile a month, 1 YouTube Short a month, visual planner, Link in Bio with a Later banner. No carousels, Stories, AI or analytics |
| Later Starter | $25 | $18.75 a month ($225 a year) | 1 | 1 social set (8 profiles) | 30 posts per profile a month, carousels and Stories, first comment, best time to post, 5 AI credits, 3 months of analytics. No extra sets or users |
| Later Growth | $50 | $37.50 a month ($450 a year) | 2 | 2 social sets (16 profiles) | 180 posts per profile a month, social inbox, approvals, hashtag analytics, Instagram Shop tags, 50 AI credits, 1 year of analytics |
| Later Scale | $110 | $82.50 a month ($990 a year) | 4 | 6 social sets (48 profiles) | Unlimited posts, custom analytics, Meta Ads analytics, competitor benchmarking, brand mentions, 100 AI credits, 2 years of analytics, priority support |
Buffer figures come from Buffer's pricing file, which says prices were last updated in November 2025. Later figures come from Later's pricing page and Later's plan availability reference. Later yearly totals are the monthly rate times 12. Read on October 19, 2026.
Per Channel vs Per Social Set: How Each Bill Grows
Buffer counts accounts. A channel is one connected Instagram profile, Facebook Page, LinkedIn page or similar, and every connected channel is billed on a paid plan, including the 3 you had on Free. The rate falls with volume. On monthly billing channels 1 to 10 cost $6 each on Essentials and $12 on Team, channels 11 to 25 cost $4 each on both, channels 26 to 50 cost $3, and from the 51st a channel costs $1 on Essentials and $2 on Team. Buffer's pricing file prints sample totals: 10 channels cost $60 a month on Essentials and $120 on Team, 25 channels $120 and $180. A Start Page counts as a channel too, per Buffer's Start Page guide.
Later counts brands and posts. Its social set holds up to one profile on each of its 8 networks, so the bill does not change whether you connect two of them or all eight. What changes is volume: Later's post count guide counts a post when it is scheduled, counts Instagram Stories, and resets on the 1st of each month at midnight UTC. The plan reference adds that drafts count as well. A creator who saves 10 drafts on Starter has 20 posts left for that profile that month.
Extra capacity on Later comes as add ons from Growth up. The pricing page shows an extra social set at $11.25 a month and an extra user at $3.75 on yearly billing, and its FAQ prices an extra user at $5 a month. Later's add on guide says add ons are prorated, can be removed later, and are not sold to anyone who subscribed inside Later's iOS app. Starter cannot add a set or a user at all, so a second brand or a second person on Later means Growth.
Yearly billing works differently too. Later's page advertises 25 percent off, which is where $18.75, $37.50 and $82.50 come from. Buffer's file says yearly billing saves about 2 months, prints $5 and $10 as the yearly channel rates, and in another answer calls it a 20 percent discount. We use the printed rates. Two further terms separate the vendors before you pay anything: Buffer offers a refund within 7 days of a monthly plan and 30 days of an annual one, while Later's plans are non refundable, with exceptions reviewed case by case.
What Buffer and Later Cost for Four Real Setups
Every cell shows the sum. Buffer totals use its channel rates and sample table. Later totals use its plan prices and add on prices. Yearly totals are 12 months on yearly billing.
| Setup | Buffer | Later | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo creator: Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest, about 4 posts a week each | Free: $0, with 10 posts per channel queued at a time. Or Essentials: 3 × $6 = $18 a month, or 3 × $5 = $15 billed yearly ($180 a year) | Free: $0, with 12 posts per profile a month and no carousels or Stories. Or Starter: $25 a month, or $18.75 billed yearly ($225 a year) | Buffer Essentials costs $7 a month less ($25 minus $18), or $45 a year less ($225 minus $180) |
| Small business: one brand on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest and YouTube, about 20 posts a month each | Essentials: 6 × $6 = $36 a month ($432 a year), or 6 × $5 = $30 billed yearly ($360 a year) | Starter: $25 a month ($300 a year), or $18.75 billed yearly ($225 a year). Fits, since 20 is under the cap of 30 | Later costs $11 a month less ($36 minus $25), or $135 a year less ($360 minus $225) |
| The same business posting every day on all six | Essentials: still $36 a month, or $30 billed yearly. No monthly cap | Growth, because 31 daily posts pass Starter's 30: $50 a month, or $37.50 billed yearly ($450 a year) | Buffer costs $14 a month less ($50 minus $36), or $90 a year less ($450 minus $360) |
| Team of 3 with approvals: 2 brands on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and LinkedIn (8 accounts) | Team: 8 × $12 = $96 a month ($1,152 a year), or 8 × $10 = $80 billed yearly ($960 a year). Unlimited users | Growth with 1 extra user: $50 + $5 = $55 a month ($660 a year), or $37.50 + $3.75 = $41.25 billed yearly ($495 a year). Inbox included | Later costs $41 a month less ($96 minus $55), or $465 a year less ($960 minus $495) |
| Agency: 5 client brands on 5 networks each (25 accounts), 5 people, approvals | Team: 10 × $12 + 15 × $4 = $120 + $60 = $180 a month ($2,160 a year), or $150 a month billed yearly ($1,800 a year) per Buffer's table | Scale with 1 extra user: $110 + $5 = $115 a month ($1,380 a year), or $82.50 + $3.75 = $86.25 billed yearly ($1,035 a year) | Later costs $65 a month less ($180 minus $115), or $765 a year less ($1,800 minus $1,035) |
Rates from Buffer's pricing page and Later's pricing page on October 19, 2026, before tax. On the agency row Later also fits on Growth with 3 extra sets and 3 extra users billed yearly: $37.50 + 3 × $11.25 + 3 × $3.75 = $82.50 a month ($990 a year), without Scale's benchmarking and longer history.
Where Buffer Is Cheaper, Where Later Is Cheaper and Where the Lines Cross
For one brand, the crossing point is the fifth channel. On monthly billing 4 channels on Buffer Essentials cost $24, a dollar under Later Starter, and 5 channels cost $30, five dollars over it. On yearly billing the crossing comes one channel earlier: 3 channels cost $15 on Buffer against $18.75 on Later, and 4 channels cost $20. Past that point Later's flat set keeps the bill at $25 while Buffer adds $6 per network.
The post cap moves the line back. Once any one profile needs a 31st post in a month, Later Starter stops being an option and Growth at $50 applies, which is the price of 8 Buffer channels on monthly billing. So the honest rule is two questions long: how many networks, and how many posts per network. Few networks or many posts favor Buffer. Many networks and a steady pace under 30 posts favor Later.
For teams, Later's included seats give it the lead at small sizes. Growth includes 2 users and 2 brands for $50 with approvals, and Buffer Team charges $12 per channel for the first 10, so 5 channels already cost $60. Buffer pulls ahead only when people far outnumber accounts. Twenty people on 10 channels for 2 brands cost $120 a month on Buffer Team. On Later they need Growth with 18 extra users: $50 plus 18 × $5, which is $140. Below about 16 users on that setup, Later costs less.
Read the gaps as prices for different things. Later's lower team bill includes an inbox for private messages and approvals with outside reviewers. Buffer's lower bill for few channels includes networks Later does not reach and a public API. If you only need the calendar, either tool does that job, and the cheaper column for your own setup is the right one.
Buffer vs Later Free: What Each Free Plan Includes
Buffer's free plan is on its pricing page and has no time limit. It connects 3 channels on any network Buffer supports, with 1 user and 10 scheduled posts per channel at any one time: when a post goes out, its slot frees up. It includes the AI Assistant without a cap, Insights with 30 days of history, the comment inbox with 5 AI reply suggestions a week, 100 saved ideas and API access with 3,000 requests a month, per Buffer's pricing file. A Start Page uses one of the 3 channels.
Later's free plan is harder to find. Its pricing page shows three paid plans with trials, and the free plan is described in Later's plan guide as a plan for creators who schedule a limited number of posts or join brand campaigns. Later's plan availability reference sets the limits: 1 social set, 1 user, 12 posts per profile a month with drafts counted, 1 YouTube Short a month, no Instagram carousels or Stories, no Facebook carousels or Reels, no first comment, no AI credits and no platform analytics. The visual planner and a Link in Bio page with a Later banner are included, and the calendar shows 2 weeks back and 2 weeks ahead.
The two count in opposite ways. Later Free gives each connected profile 12 posts a month, so three profiles can publish 36 posts in a month. Buffer Free never caps the month, only the queue: a channel can publish 10 posts this week and 10 more next week, as long as no more than 10 wait at once. For someone who schedules a week ahead, Buffer's limit is the looser one. For someone who wants a month planned in one sitting, Later's 12 per profile goes further on one profile, and Buffer's 3 channel limit is the tighter wall.
So for Buffer vs Later free, Buffer's plan is the more complete product: analytics, AI, an inbox and every post type. Later's free plan is a planner with a bio page. If the grid is what you want to try, start with Later Free. If you want posts to keep going out at no cost, start with Buffer Free.

Instagram Features in Buffer and Later
Instagram is where most Buffer vs Later searches start, and in 2026 the two have moved close together. Both publish single images, videos, Reels, carousels of up to 10 items and Stories to business accounts, and both fall back on a phone notification when Instagram will not accept a post from an outside tool. Buffer's Instagram page says Reels can be scheduled on the free plan. On Later, carousels and Stories need a paid plan, and Stories auto publish for business profiles only.
Music arrived in both this year. Later's guide to Reels audio lets you search and attach audio that Meta makes available to outside tools, with a Facebook Page connected to the Instagram account, and warns that some songs in the Instagram app will not appear. On October 7, 2026 Buffer added music, collaborators and trial Reels: audio search in the composer, up to three collaborators on a post, Reel or carousel, trial Reels shown to non followers first, and several Stories published as one sequence. Later's platform article also lists collaborative posts with up to 3 collaborators.
The grid is where Later still leads. Its planner shows scheduled, published and draft posts together and lets you drag scheduled posts into a new order, on the free plan too. Buffer's Grid Preview shows the same three kinds of posts for professional accounts, and its guide describes viewing the grid without describing a way to rearrange it. If you plan the feed by look before you plan it by date, Later is built for that habit.
Links from the grid are close to even. Later's Link in Bio page turns your feed into a clickable page with up to 5 links per Instagram post and reports clicks for 3 months on Free, 1 year on Starter and Growth and 2 years on Scale. Buffer offers two pages: Shop Grid, a clickable copy of your last 100 posts with up to 3 custom links at the top on paid plans, and Start Page, a small site built from blocks that can embed videos, products and a signup form. Later adds Instagram Shop product tags from Growth. Buffer lists custom video covers from Essentials, and Later lists custom thumbnails on its paid plans.

Later's own two minute walkthrough of the feature it is best known for: the grid preview and calendar described above.
Buffer vs Later Analytics and Reporting
Buffer rebuilt its analytics as Insights on April 14, 2026. The launch note lists Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Threads, TikTok, Bluesky, Mastodon, Pinterest and YouTube. Every plan gets follower growth, engagement, impressions and results per post plus Takeaways, which suggest what to post next. Free keeps 30 days of history. Paid plans keep all of it and add a performance overview, custom analytics, reports and custom UTM settings, and Team adds branded reports. Exports as CSV, Markdown or PDF need a paid plan, per Buffer's Insights guide, which also says Facebook groups, Instagram personal profiles and Start Page are left out.
Later's analytics are tied to plan length. The free plan has none. Starter keeps 3 months, Growth 1 year and Scale 2 years for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Threads, and Pinterest stays at 3 months on every plan and counts only Pins scheduled through Later. Later's LinkedIn analytics cover personal profiles only, from desktop. Some Instagram and Facebook sections need 100 followers. A CSV export of Instagram analytics starts on Starter, the shareable Instagram Performance Report and hashtag analytics start on Growth, and Custom Analytics with Meta Ads data and scheduled email reports is a Scale feature.
Later also sells what Buffer does not offer at any price: competitor benchmarking for up to 20 Instagram competitors, brand mentions, sentiment and Future Insights on trends, all on Scale and all desktop only. Later's pricing page places them under Social Listening. Buffer's own comparison article says Later sells listening, influencer marketing and commerce as add on products, and that Buffer keeps its focus on publishing, engagement and insights.
Stronger on analytics depends on budget. At the low end Buffer gives more: full history on Essentials from $6 a channel, against 3 months on Later Starter. At the top Later gives more: two years of data, ads results next to organic posts and competitor tracking on Scale for $110 a month.
AI Assistant vs AI Credits
Buffer's AI Assistant is on every plan, the free one included, and the pricing file calls its use unlimited. It writes, rewrites and repurposes post text inside the composer, and since June 2026 it also writes alt text for images. On the comment side, the inbox suggests replies: 5 a week on Free and without a cap on paid plans.
Later's AI runs on credits. Later's credits guide charges 1 credit for one generated caption and 1 credit for three ideas, gives Starter 5 credits a month, Growth 50 and Scale 100, and resets them on the 1st of the month. Extra credits come as a recurring add on of 100 credits for $5 a month or $40 a year. The plan reference adds that the Caption Writer generates in English only and that Ideas is a beta feature on desktop. Five captions a month on Starter is about one per week.
Neither tool makes the image or the video. Both work on words, and both connect to Canva for design. Later's Buffer comparison page says its AI tools sit inside the visual planner so you can draft and drag posts onto the grid in one view, and Buffer's article on the two says Buffer includes unlimited AI on every plan while Later limits it by tier. Both statements match the plan pages. Stronger on AI: Buffer, for volume at no extra cost.
Teams, Approvals, Inbox, API, MCP and Mobile Apps
Six topics that matter once a second person or a second tool is involved. Each card ends with the stronger of the two.
Users and Seats
Buffer Free and Essentials have 1 user and Team has unlimited users. Later Starter has 1 user and cannot add more, Growth has 2, Scale has 4, and each extra user costs $5 a month, or $3.75 on yearly billing. For two or three people Later's included seats cost less. For a larger team Buffer is stronger, because adding a person costs nothing.
Approvals and Roles
On Buffer Team a member set to need approval sends drafts for review, and the owner or a user with full access moves them to the queue, per Buffer's approval guide. On Later Growth and Scale, owners and reviewers approve, members request approval, and outside reviewers get a link that expires after 7 days. Later's approval guide says this works on desktop only and not for Instagram Stories. Later is stronger for client sign off from people outside the tool.
Inbox
Buffer's Community collects comments from 10 networks on every plan, Free included, and pulls in the last 30 days when you connect a channel. It does not hold private messages. Later's Social Inbox holds Instagram and Facebook direct messages and comments from Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, on Growth and Scale, on desktop, and is labeled beta. Buffer is stronger for comments across many networks. Later is stronger if customers write to you in Instagram messages.
API and Automation
Buffer's API guide puts its GraphQL API on every plan: 3,000 requests per 30 days on Free, 7,500 on Essentials and 15,000 on Team. It creates and schedules posts and does not yet return full analytics. Buffer also lists Zapier, Make, n8n, IFTTT and WordPress on every plan. Later's help center documents no public API, and its platform article lists Zapier as unsupported. Buffer is stronger without a contest.
MCP for Claude and ChatGPT
On June 10, 2026 Buffer added an MCP connection for Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity: Claude and ChatGPT connect with one click, and Perplexity uses an API key. A chat can draft a week of posts or summarize last month's results. We found no MCP server or AI assistant connector in Later's help center on October 19, 2026. Buffer is stronger. Our Buffer MCP server page covers it in detail.
Mobile Apps
Both have iOS and Android apps. Later's mobile guide says its apps leave out analytics, the inbox, media collection and billing, and that Android is not available in every country. Later's platform guides add that Snapchat and YouTube Shorts are scheduled from desktop and Threads is not in the Android app. Buffer's changelog shows its iOS and Android apps getting push notification settings on the web in September 2026. For posting from a phone, the two are close. Later is stronger for grid preview on the phone, which it calls Preview.
Video: Scheduling Instagram Posts for Free With Buffer
Buffer's own short video on the free route: what Instagram's built in scheduler does, and what Buffer's free plan adds on top of it.
What Each Tool Does Not Do
Buffer does not publish to Snapchat or Telegram, does not offer social listening, competitor benchmarking or influencer tools, and has no place for private messages. Its CSV upload skips video and carousels. Instagram personal profiles and Facebook groups publish by reminder only, and Insights leaves both out. Approvals need the Team plan at twice the Essentials rate for the first 10 channels, and moving from Free to a paid plan means paying for every connected channel, the first 3 included.
Later does not publish to X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Google Business Profile, Substack or Telegram, and it does not reach Facebook groups, Facebook Stories, long YouTube videos or LinkedIn PDF documents. Starter caps posts at 30 per profile a month with drafts counted, gives 5 AI credits, holds 1 user and cannot add a second brand. Inbox and approvals start on Growth, and the inbox is desktop only. Plans are non refundable. YouTube Shorts and Snapchat posting are desktop only, and Threads is not in the Android app.
Each vendor's page about the other is partly right. Later's Buffer comparison prices 8 profiles at $18.75 a month on Later against about $40 on Buffer, both on yearly billing, which matches the arithmetic (8 × $5 = $40), and leaves out that the $18.75 plan stops at 30 posts per profile. It also says Buffer has no drag and drop grid planner, which matches Buffer's own grid guide. Buffer's article on Buffer vs Later, published September 17, 2026, lists 12 platforms for Buffer and 8 for Later and says Buffer's Team plan is more cost effective for growing agencies, which holds once users outnumber accounts and not for the small team in our worked setups.
On reviews: we did not quote Reddit threads or review sites for this page, because we could not check them against each vendor's current plans. The questions that matter most, post caps, free plan limits and refund terms, are answered above from each vendor's own documents.
What Changed at Buffer and Later in the Last Year
Buffer moved to volume pricing in November 2025, so channels after the 10th cost less. Buffer's changelog then lists TikTok, YouTube, Google Business Profile and Mastodon added to the comment inbox on April 7, 2026, the rebuilt Insights on April 14, the MCP connection on June 10, AI alt text on June 17, Buffer Home on June 24, custom post templates in July, mentions from X in the inbox, Substack Notes as a channel on September 23, posts that mix images and video on September 28 and Instagram music, collaborators and trial Reels on October 7, 2026. The direction is steady: new networks and new native options at the same price.
Later changed its plans and its network list. Plans started on or after July 1, 2025 are the current ones, older plans are legacy, and the Advanced tier was replaced by Scale. Later stopped connecting new X accounts on July 30, 2025 and ended X publishing, analytics and listening on August 28, 2025, per Later's X notice. Social Inbox replaced the older Conversations tool, and the pricing page now marks Reels audio, best time to post for Facebook and TikTok and Meta Ads analytics as new.
The company around the scheduler changed too. Later's about page lists a rebrand launched at SXSW 2026, the launch of Later 360 reporting for influencer programs, and a release saying Later passed $300 million in creator payouts. Most of that news concerns influencer marketing, not the scheduler this page compares. If you last looked at Later before mid 2025, check whether your account is on a legacy plan, since the plan reference says those can lack Social Inbox and Custom Analytics.

Choose Buffer If
Buffer fits when you post to a few channels or many networks, post often, or want other tools and AI assistants to post for you.
You Want a Free Plan That Publishes Everything
Three channels, Reels, carousels, Stories, unlimited AI help, 30 days of analytics and a comment inbox cost $0. Later's free plan drops carousels, Stories, AI and analytics.
You Post Every Day
Paid Buffer plans have no monthly cap. Daily posting on Later means Growth at $50, while six channels on Buffer Essentials stay at $36.
Your Audience Is on X, Bluesky, Mastodon or Substack
Buffer publishes to all four plus Google Business Profile. Later supports none of the five.
Your Whole Company Posts
Buffer Team has unlimited users. Twenty people on 10 channels cost $120 a month with approvals. On Later the same team needs Growth plus 18 users at $140.
You Automate With an API or an AI Assistant
The API is on every plan and the MCP connection works with Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Zapier, Make and n8n are listed on every plan as well.
Choose Later If
Later fits when one brand posts to many networks at a steady pace, when the Instagram grid matters, or when a small team needs an inbox and sign off.
One Brand Posts to Six or More Networks
One social set covers 8 profiles for $25 a month, or $18.75 billed yearly. Six channels on Buffer cost $36, as long as you stay under 30 posts per profile a month.
You Plan the Instagram Grid by Eye
Drag and drop grid planning works on every plan, Free included, and the Link in Bio page turns each post into up to 5 links.
Customers Message You on Instagram or Facebook
Growth's Social Inbox holds direct messages from both and comments from TikTok too. Buffer has no place for private messages.
A Client Signs Off Before Anything Goes Out
Approvals and review links for people without a Later account start on Growth at $50, with 2 users and 2 brands included.
You Report on Competitors or Run Meta Ads
Scale tracks up to 20 Instagram competitors, brand mentions and sentiment, and shows Meta Ads results next to organic posts, with 2 years of history.
A Third Option If You Have an App: Spreadcast
Buffer and Later share one thing no table above shows: both start with an empty calendar. You decide what to say, make the image or video, write a caption for each network, then schedule it. Their AI writes words once you know the topic. For an app founder that first step is usually why the feed goes quiet between releases, as we explain in why your scheduler is not the reason your feed is empty.
Spreadcast does that step for apps on the App Store. You paste your App Store link once at the start page, and Spreadcast checks the listing every day. A new version becomes an update post: your own screenshot in an iPhone frame, a headline and two or three points from the release notes, in the language of the notes. A rating milestone becomes a thank you post. Each post is designed in your icon, screenshots and colors, with a caption written for each network, and Spreadcast publishes it to Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram and Discord, plus YouTube for video posts. Each post waits for one tap of approval by default, or runs on full autopilot on paid plans. Review quote posts, carousels and picture posts are made on demand in Create or from Claude or ChatGPT through the Spreadcast MCP server.
Spreadcast's Free plan makes 3 posts for one app for you to download, with a small Spreadcast mark. Pro is $29 a month and includes design, captions and publishing to every network, for 1 app and up to 10 social accounts. Buffer reaches 7 of Spreadcast's 8 networks, all but Telegram, and 7 channels on Essentials cost $42 a month, which is $13 more than Pro before a single post is made. Later reaches 6 of the 8, with no Bluesky or Telegram, and Starter at $25 is $4 under Pro for a calendar you fill yourself. Studio is $79 a month for 5 apps, each with its own brand and accounts, and 3 seats. Plans are on the pricing page, and every paid plan comes with a full refund within 7 days.
One limit to know: Spreadcast reads Apple App Store listings only, and Google Play links are not supported yet. It also has no inbox, grid planner, link in bio page or X posting. If you have no app on the App Store, plan a grid, answer messages or post to X, choose Buffer or Later. Many app teams use both kinds of tool: Spreadcast for the update and milestone posts, and Buffer's free plan or a Later set for photos and clips made by hand.
Buffer vs Later vs Hootsuite vs Metricool
People who search Buffer vs Later often add Hootsuite or Metricool to the same search. Spreadcast, which we make, is in the first row because it is the only one here that makes the posts. Other prices are from each vendor's own pricing page, read on October 19, 2026.
| Tool | Starts at | Priced by | Free plan | Look at it if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spreadcast | Free drafts your posts. Pro is $29 a month and includes design, captions and publishing to every network | App, with up to 10 social accounts on Pro | Yes: 3 designed posts for 1 app, to download | You have an app on the App Store and want posts designed and published for you |
| Buffer | $6 per channel a month, or $5 billed yearly | Channel | Yes: 3 channels | You post to a few channels or to X, Bluesky, Mastodon or Substack |
| Later | $25 a month, or $18.75 billed yearly | Social set of 8 profiles, with post caps | Yes, outside the pricing page: 12 posts per profile a month | One brand posts to many networks and the Instagram grid matters |
| Hootsuite | $99 per user a month on annual billing for Standard, $199 for Professional, $399 for Advanced, per Hootsuite's plans page | User seat, with 10 social accounts on Standard | No. A 14 day trial without a card | A team answers messages, monitors its brand and competitors and wants one inbox |
| Metricool | $20 a month on annual billing or $25 monthly for up to 5 brands, per Metricool's pricing page | Brand | Yes: 1 brand, 20 posts a month, no LinkedIn or X | You manage several brands and reports matter more than grid planning |

Buffer, Later or Hootsuite? Buffer, Later or Metricool?
Buffer, Later or Hootsuite comes down to whether you need a suite. Hootsuite's Standard seat at $99 a month on annual billing holds 10 social accounts, an inbox for messages, brand and competitor monitoring and AI that drafts posts and images. One person with 8 channels pays $48 a month on Buffer Essentials and $25 to $50 on Later, depending on posting volume. A team of three pays $297 for three Hootsuite seats. Choose Hootsuite when the inbox and listening are daily work. Choose Buffer or Later when publishing is the job.
Buffer, Later or Metricool comes down to how many brands you run. Metricool prices by brand: its Starter plan covers up to 5 brands for $20 a month on annual billing or $25 monthly, and up to 10 brands for $36 or $45. Five brands on Later need Growth with 3 extra sets, which is $71.25 a month on yearly billing ($37.50 + 3 × $11.25), and five brands on Buffer with 4 channels each come to 20 channels, which is $100 a month on Essentials billed monthly (10 × $6 + 10 × $4). Metricool's free plan covers 1 brand and 20 posts a month and leaves out LinkedIn and X.
The four tools in one line each: Buffer for low cost publishing across the widest set of networks, Later for visual Instagram planning and a small team's inbox, Hootsuite for a full suite with messages and listening, and Metricool for many brands and reports. Spreadcast sits beside all four for app makers, because it makes the posts they schedule.
How to Switch From Later to Buffer
Run both for a couple of weeks. Buffer's trial needs no card, and nothing moves across by itself.
- Step 1
Count Your Channels Before You Pick a Plan
Every profile you connect is a billed channel on Buffer. A full Later set of 8 profiles becomes 8 channels: $48 a month on Essentials or $96 on Team. Drop the networks you rarely post to, or start on Free with your 3 busiest ones.
- Step 2
Save Your Media From Later
Later's download guide saves one file at a time at medium resolution on desktop. The iOS app saves many files at full resolution, and the Android app one at a time. Use your original files if you still have them.
- Step 3
Export Reports and Bio Link Emails
Analytics do not travel between tools. Export Instagram analytics as a CSV while your Later plan is active, and export any email addresses your Link in Bio page collected.
- Step 4
Rebuild the Queue With a CSV
Download Buffer's CSV template for each channel and paste in the text, image link and time. Paid plans take 100 posts per channel per file. Video and carousel posts are added by hand, per Buffer's bulk upload guide.
- Step 5
Replace the Bio Link and the Inbox
Set up a Start Page or Shop Grid and change the link in your Instagram and TikTok bios on the day you switch. If you used Later's Social Inbox for messages, answer them in the Instagram and Facebook apps from now on.
- Step 6
Cancel Later Where You Signed Up
On desktop go to Settings, then Subscription, then Cancel Plan. A plan bought in the iOS app is cancelled through Apple. Later's cancellation guide says the plan runs to the end of the cycle, then posts over the free allowance stop publishing and analytics beyond the free level go at once.
How to Switch From Buffer to Later
This move is mostly about limits. Check them before the trial converts, because Later's trial takes a card and its plans are non refundable.
- Step 1
Count Posts per Profile, Not Channels
Later Starter allows 30 scheduled posts per profile a month, drafts and Stories included. If your busiest channel passes 30, plan on Growth at $50.
- Step 2
List What Later Will Not Publish
Posts for X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Google Business Profile and Substack end at Buffer. Keep Buffer's free plan for up to 3 of them, or post there by hand.
- Step 3
Export Insights While You Still Pay
Exports are a paid Buffer feature, and after a downgrade the free plan shows only the last 30 days of sent posts, per Buffer's downgrade guide. Export CSV or PDF reports for the range you need first.
- Step 4
Start the Later Trial and Connect One Set
Connect business or creator profiles so auto publishing and analytics work, set up Quick Schedule slots, and drag your next posts into the Visual Instagram Planner to test the grid.
- Step 5
Cancel Buffer From the Billing Page
The account owner opens Billing, clicks the three dots and chooses Cancel Plan, per Buffer's cancellation guide. The account drops to Free at the end of the period and keeps 3 channels of your choice.
How We Compared Buffer and Later
Everything on this page was read on October 19, 2026. For Buffer we used its pricing page and machine readable pricing file, its changelog and six entries in it, its Instagram and Start Page pages, its open dashboard and about page, its own Buffer vs Later article and ten help center articles. For Later we used its pricing page, its Buffer comparison page, its about page and nineteen help center articles. Later's help center refuses automated requests, so its articles were read through the help center's own article feed. Later's pricing page shows yearly prices first, so we confirmed the monthly prices of $25, $50 and $110 in the code behind its billing switch.
Three things could not be verified and are left out: user ratings on review sites and Reddit, which we could not check against current plans; Later's company size and revenue, which it does not publish on the pages we read; and the monthly price of an extra Later social set, which the pricing page shows only on yearly billing. We did not run paid accounts on either tool for this page, so nothing here is a claim about speed or reliability.
We make Spreadcast, and it appears in one section and one table. If a price or a limit here no longer matches a vendor's page, the vendor's page is right. For wider fields see the Buffer alternatives roundup and the Later alternatives roundup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Buffer or Later better?
Buffer is better for a few channels, daily posting, networks such as X, Bluesky and Substack, and automation through its API. It starts free and costs $6 per channel a month, per Buffer's pricing page. Later is better for one brand on many networks, visual Instagram planning and a small team that needs an inbox and approvals, from $25 a month per Later's pricing page.
Is Later cheaper than Buffer?
It depends on how many networks you use and how often you post. For one brand on 5 or more networks under 30 posts per profile a month, Later Starter at $25 is cheaper than Buffer Essentials at $6 per channel. For 4 channels or fewer, or for daily posting, Buffer is cheaper. A team of 3 on 8 accounts pays $55 on Later Growth and $96 on Buffer Team.
Buffer vs Later free: which free plan is better?
Buffer's, for most people. It covers 3 channels with every post type, unlimited AI help, 30 days of analytics and a comment inbox. Later's free plan, described in Later's plan guide, gives 12 posts per profile a month on up to 8 networks but no carousels, Stories, AI or analytics. Pick Later Free only to try its grid planner.
Does Later have a free plan?
Yes, though its pricing page does not show it. Later's help center lists a Free plan with 1 social set, 1 user and 12 posts per profile a month, with the visual planner and a Link in Bio page that carries a Later banner. The paid plans each offer a 14 day trial that asks for a card.
Buffer vs Later vs Hootsuite: which should I pick?
Pick Buffer for low cost publishing to many networks, Later for Instagram grid planning and a small team's inbox, and Hootsuite for a suite with messages, listening and competitor monitoring at $99 per user a month on annual billing, per Hootsuite's plans page. If you have an app on the App Store, Spreadcast designs and publishes the posts for you.
Buffer vs Later vs Metricool: which is best for several brands?
Metricool, if reports matter: Metricool's pricing page covers up to 5 brands for $20 a month on annual billing or $25 monthly. Later fits several brands that post to many networks, from Growth with extra sets. Buffer fits several brands on few networks each, since every account is one channel.
Can Buffer plan an Instagram grid like Later?
Buffer can show it. Buffer's Grid Preview displays scheduled and published posts for Instagram professional accounts. Later's Visual Instagram Planner also lets you drag scheduled posts into a new order, on every plan.
Does Later still post to X (Twitter)?
No. Later ended X support on August 28, 2025, and posts scheduled for that date or later did not publish. Buffer still publishes to X, on free and premium X profiles. Spreadcast does not post to X.
Do Buffer or Later work with Claude or ChatGPT?
Buffer does. Its MCP connection, added on June 10, 2026, links Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity to your Buffer account to draft and schedule posts. We found no MCP connector or public API in Later's help center. Spreadcast also has an MCP server that designs posts and saves them as drafts.
Can I get a refund from Buffer or Later?
Buffer refunds within 7 days of starting a monthly plan and 30 days of an annual one, per Buffer's refund policy. Later's refund policy says its plans are non refundable, with exceptions reviewed case by case, so cancel a Later trial before it ends if it is not a fit.
Which is better for a small business, Buffer or Later?
Later, if you are one brand on five or more networks and post a few times a week per network: $25 a month covers all of them. Buffer, if you post to 4 channels or fewer, post daily, or need X, Bluesky, Google Business Profile or Substack.
Is Buffer worth it?
For most solo creators and small brands, yes: the free plan publishes to 3 channels with AI and analytics, and paid plans cost $6 per channel with no monthly post cap. It is a weaker fit if you need private messages, listening, competitor reports or Snapchat.
