Why People Look for Later Alternatives in 2026
Later is still one of the best visual planners for Instagram. The reasons people leave are mostly about limits and price. On Later's pricing page the Starter plan costs $25 a month ($18.75 billed yearly) and allows 30 scheduled posts per profile each month. Growth costs $50 a month for 180 posts per profile, and unlimited posting starts on Scale at $110 a month.
Three other limits push people to search. Later's help center says support for X ended on August 28, 2025, and Bluesky is not on the list of supported networks. Starter cannot add a second social set, so a second Instagram account means moving up to Growth. And the free plan, which Later's plan reference sets at 12 posts per profile a month, leaves out carousels, Stories and analytics.
None of that makes Later a bad tool. It means the right alternative depends on which limit you hit. People who search for apps like Later or for Later competitors usually want one of four things: a higher post cap for the money, a network Later dropped, a free plan with fewer gaps, or a tool that makes the posts as well as scheduling them. We make Spreadcast. It comes first in the list below because it is the only tool here that makes the posts for you. The seven schedulers after it are ranked by how well they replace Later for someone whose main job is scheduling Instagram and a few other networks, and each entry says who should pick it and who should skip it.
Later Alternatives Compared at a Glance
Starting prices are the cheapest paid plan on monthly billing in US dollars, with the yearly rate in parentheses where it differs a lot. Later is in the first row as the baseline, and Spreadcast, which is ours, comes next. The last column is the one a scheduler's price leaves out: who makes the post.

Prices and limits checked on each vendor's pricing page on October 11, 2026. Most vendors charge less on yearly billing, and several add tax or VAT at checkout.
The 8 Best Later Alternatives, Ranked
Spreadcast is ours and comes first, because it is the only tool here that makes the posts for you. The seven schedulers after it are ranked for the most common reason to leave Later: you want a visual Instagram planner or scheduler with a better price or looser limits.
- 1
Spreadcast
Free, then $29 a month flat with publishing to 8 networks includedBest if you run an app: it designs the posts and publishes them for you
Spreadcast is ours, and it does the step every scheduler below leaves to you: it makes the post. A scheduler starts with a post you made. Spreadcast starts with your App Store link. It checks the public listing every day, and when a new version, a new 5 star review or a rating milestone appears, it designs a 1080 by 1350 post from your app icon and screenshots and writes a caption for each network. On Pro it publishes to Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram and Discord, plus YouTube for video posts, after one tap of approval or on full autopilot. Bluesky and Telegram are two networks Later does not publish to. Pro is $29 a month flat. That is $4 more than Later Starter billed monthly, and it includes the design, the captions and the publishing, where Later Starter gives you a calendar for 30 posts per profile that you make yourself. Eight channels on Buffer Essentials come to $48 a month billed monthly (8 times $6). The free plan drafts every post for 1 app, so you can judge the designs before paying: paste your App Store link and look at them. It is built for apps on the App Store and makes still image posts. Keep one of the planners below if you arrange a grid by eye, post video or use a link in bio page.
Setup is one step: you paste the link and connect each social account once. There is no SDK, no code and no access to your developer account, because Spreadcast reads the public listing. The design comes from the listing too: the app icon, the screenshots and colors read from the icon, plus a logo and fonts from your website if the app has one. Each post takes the next free slot in a calendar, and you can drag it to another day. A brand kit screen holds the logo, colors and screenshots, and New Post makes a single post by hand when you want one between the automatic ones.
Free is $0 for 1 app and drafts each post for download, with a small Spreadcast mark on it. Pro is $29 a month for 1 app, with clean posts published for you. Studio is $79 a month for 5 apps and 3 seats, and each app keeps its own brand. Pick it if you ship an app and the feed has gone quiet because nobody has time to make posts. A shop or a creator has no App Store listing for it to read, so one of the planners below fits them better.
Pros
- Designs every post from your app icon and screenshots
- Publishes to 8 networks, including Bluesky and Telegram
- Starts from one App Store link, with no SDK or code
- Free plan drafts every post for 1 app
- Flat $29 a month for all 8 networks
- MCP server so Claude or ChatGPT can design posts, write captions and schedule them, drafts only by default
Cons
- Built for apps on the App Store
- Still image posts, so keep an editor for video
- 2
Planoly
Free on mobile, then $16 a monthBest like for like swap if you love the visual grid
Planoly is the closest thing to Later's planner. You preview the Instagram feed and rearrange posts before anything publishes, and a link in bio page is included on every paid plan. Planoly's pricing page lists Starter at $16 a month for 1 social set and 1 user, Growth at $28 for 2 sets and Pro at $55 for 6 sets on monthly billing ($14, $24 and $47 billed yearly), all with unlimited uploads and a 14 day free trial. A social set holds one account each on Instagram, Facebook, X, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads and TikTok. The limits: the free plan lives only in the mobile app with 10 uploads a month, Starter cannot add users or sets, and the pricing page does not list analytics among the plan features. Pick it if 30 posts per profile on Later Starter is your problem.
Planoly's Instagram page names the tools around the grid: drag and drop arranging, a Hashtag Manager that saves hashtags in groups, an AI Caption Writer and automatic direct messages. The pricing page adds AI content ideas, a media library and a store for digital products with zero transaction fees on every plan. Planoly's auto post guidelines cover single images, single videos, Reels and carousels for Business and Creator accounts linked to a Facebook Page. Stories auto post for Business accounts only, and the Story caption is not carried over.
Add ons start on Growth, where an extra social set is $10 a month and an extra user $5. On Pro they drop to $8 and $3. Annual billing saves up to 15 percent. Planoly suits creators, shops and small brands who arrange the feed by eye and want a link in bio page on every paid plan. Skip it if reports drive your decisions, or if you need a free plan that works on the web.
Pros
- Grid preview with drag and drop on every plan
- Unlimited uploads from $16 a month
- Link in bio page and Instagram DM automation included
- One social set covers 8 networks, including X
Cons
- Free plan is mobile only, with 10 uploads a month
- Stories auto post for Business accounts only
- Starter cannot add users or social sets
- Pricing page lists no analytics
- 3
Buffer
Free, then $5 a month per channel billed yearlyBest free Later alternative for one person
Buffer's free plan connects up to 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, and the slot refills when a post goes out. Paid plans charge per channel: Essentials is $5 a month per channel billed yearly and Team is $10, so a founder with Instagram, LinkedIn and X pays about $15 a month. Buffer publishes to 12 channels including X, Bluesky, Mastodon and Google Business Profile, none of which Later covers. It also has a Grid Preview for Instagram professional accounts. The limits: the grid is one preview screen, where Later builds the whole workflow around it, and per channel pricing adds up as you connect more accounts. Our Buffer comparison goes deeper.
On Instagram, Buffer's Instagram guide says Business and Creator accounts publish automatically: single images, carousels of up to 10 images and videos, Reels from 5 seconds to 15 minutes, and Stories. Personal accounts publish by phone notification, and so do posts and Stories with music, polls or product tags, and Stories with links, text or stickers. Start Page, Buffer's link in bio tool, is included on the free plan with some feature limits, and the AI Assistant for writing and rewriting captions is on every plan.
Billed monthly, Essentials is $6 per channel and Team is $12, and Team adds unlimited users and approval workflows. The hashtag manager, first comment scheduling and analytics beyond 30 days are paid features. From the 11th channel the price per channel drops to $4. Buffer suits one person with one to three channels who wants a free Instagram scheduler with X and Bluesky in the same queue. Skip it if you run eight or more accounts, or if you plan the whole feed as a grid.
Pros
- Free plan with 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts each
- 12 channels, including X, Bluesky and Mastodon
- Start Page link in bio on the free plan
- AI Assistant on every plan, including Free
Cons
- Priced per channel: 8 channels cost $48 a month billed monthly
- Hashtag manager and first comment need a paid plan
- Grid Preview works for professional accounts only
- 4
Metricool
Free, then from $20 a month billed annuallyBest for analytics, competitors and several brands
Metricool's pricing page lists a free plan with 1 brand, 20 scheduled posts a month, 5 competitor profiles and 30 days of analytics. Starter begins at $20 a month billed annually ($25 monthly) for up to 5 brands with unlimited scheduling under a fair use policy, analytics with unlimited history and a link in bio page. The planner includes an Instagram feed preview. The limits: the free plan excludes LinkedIn and X, X is a paid add on at $10 a month per connected account on every plan, and team roles and the approval system start on Advanced at $53 a month billed annually. Pick it if you manage more than two brands or care about reports. See also the Metricool comparison.
The free plan connects one profile each on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, Pinterest, TikTok, YouTube, Twitch and Google Business Profile,. The AI assistant has 5 credits per brand a month on Free, 20 on Starter and 35 on Advanced. A hashtag search tool starts on Starter, and best time to post is on every plan. Metricool's Instagram guide says posts, carousels, Reels and Stories publish automatically for business and creator profiles. A Story with a link, a mention or a sticker is sent to your phone to finish by hand.
Prices step up by brand count. Billed monthly, Starter is $25 a month for up to 5 brands and $45 for up to 10, and Advanced starts at $67 for 15. Annual billing takes about 20 percent off. Metricool suits freelancers and small agencies who report to clients, since one Starter bill covers five of them. Skip it if X is your main network, or if you only need to queue a few posts a week.
Pros
- Free plan with 30 days of analytics and 5 competitor profiles
- Starter covers up to 5 brands for $25 a month
- Unlimited analytics history on paid plans
- Link in bio pages and an Instagram feed preview
Cons
- No LinkedIn or X on the free plan
- X is a $10 a month add on per account
- Approvals and team roles start on Advanced
- 5
Publer
Free, then from $5 a month for 1 accountBest price if you manage a few accounts and need X
Publer prices by the number of social accounts. Publer's plans and pricing guide describes a free plan with 3 social accounts and 10 scheduled posts per account, and a Professional plan that starts at $5 a month for 1 account with unlimited scheduling, bulk scheduling and RSS automations. It supports 13 platforms including X, Bluesky, Mastodon and Telegram, and its Instagram feed preview shows drafts, scheduled and published posts in one grid. The limits: X cannot be connected on the free plan, post history on Free lasts 24 hours, and analytics sit on the Business plan. Our Publer comparison has the full price table.
The free plan has no expiry date. Publer's free plan guide lists the Canva integration, a photo editor, link shortening with UTM tags, a calendar view and a link in bio profile for each account. Professional adds X, bulk scheduling, RSS automations and full post history. Business adds analytics with downloadable reports, hashtag suggestions, best times to post, competitor analysis and AI Assist prompts. On Instagram, Publer's Stories guide says only Business accounts can post a Story automatically. Creator accounts get a reminder on the phone.
The price moves with the number of accounts. On Publer's price calculator on October 11, 2026, 8 accounts came to $32 a month on Professional and $56 on Business, billed monthly. Yearly billing takes 20 percent off, and every 10th account is free. Publer suits someone with a handful of accounts who needs X, Bluesky or Telegram and wants to pay for exactly that number. Skip it if you want analytics at the lowest price, because reports sit on Business.
Pros
- Free plan with 3 accounts and 10 scheduled posts each
- 13 networks, including X, Bluesky, Mastodon and Telegram
- From $5 a month for 1 account
- Link in bio profile on every plan, including Free
Cons
- No X on the free plan
- Free post history lasts 24 hours
- Analytics and hashtag suggestions need Business
- Stories auto publish for Business accounts only
- 6
Pallyy
Free, then $25 a monthBest for freelancers and small agencies who bill per client
Pallyy treats each client as one social set of up to 11 accounts and charges a flat rate per set. Pallyy's pricing page lists a free plan with 1 social set and 15 scheduled posts a month, Pro at $25 a month with unlimited posts and extra sets at $10 a month each, and Agency at $99 a month for 10 sets and 3 users. The feature list includes an Instagram grid preview, a social inbox, link in bio pages and client approvals through a shared calendar link. The limits: the free plan publishes images only, with no video, carousels or Reels, and Pro is a single user plan. Three clients cost $45 a month here, which is less than Later Growth with one extra social set.
The comparison table on Pallyy's pricing page shows what each plan gets. Free includes the Instagram grid preview, hashtag lists, first comment and 30 days of analytics with 1 competitor tracked. Pro adds video, carousels, Reels, a queue, AI captions, the inbox for comments and direct messages, bio link pages and 5 years of analytics with 10 competitors. Clients approve posts through a shared calendar link, so a client needs no account and no seat.
Above Agency, Scale is $199 a month for 30 social sets and 10 users. Annual billing saves up to 25 percent, and the 14 day trial of a paid plan asks for a card. Pallyy suits a freelancer who adds clients one at a time and wants each one to cost the same. Skip Pro if two people need to log in, because extra users start on Agency.
Pros
- Flat price per client set, with up to 11 accounts in a set
- Instagram grid preview on every plan, including Free
- Inbox, bio link pages and AI captions on Pro
- 5 years of analytics on paid plans
Cons
- Free plan publishes images only, 15 posts a month
- Pro is for 1 user and cannot add another
- Custom reports and report export start on Agency

Best free option if you only post to Facebook and Instagram
Meta's own tool costs nothing. Meta's help center says Meta Business Suite is free on desktop and in the mobile app, and that you can create, schedule and manage Facebook and Instagram posts, Stories and Reels, see them in a calendar, and view your Instagram grid. It also has an inbox for comments and messages and basic insights. The limits are the obvious ones: it schedules to Meta's own apps only, so there is no TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest or X, the feature list has no link in bio page, and you need a business portfolio to use it. For a local business with one Instagram account, it may be all you need.
Three help pages describe the publishing tools. Meta's guide to posts says you can post to a Facebook Page, an Instagram profile or a Facebook Group, add up to 10 photos for Instagram, write separate text for each app and pick from Active times, which are based on when your followers were online over the past 7 days. Meta's guide to Stories allows up to 10 photos or videos with text, mentions, stickers and a link. Meta's guide to Reels covers scheduling a Reel on desktop or in the mobile app.
There is no paid plan to compare. Business Suite also runs A/B tests on two versions of a post and suggests content ideas with AI. It suits a cafe, a salon or a local shop with one Facebook Page and one Instagram account. Skip it once TikTok, LinkedIn or Pinterest matter, because you would be scheduling in two places.
Pros
- Free on desktop and in the mobile app
- Schedules posts, Stories and Reels
- Stories keep stickers, mentions and a link
- One inbox for Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp
Cons
- Publishes to Meta's own apps only
- No link in bio page in the feature list
- Needs a business portfolio
- 8
Sked Social
$69 a month, 14 day free trialBest for teams and agencies that need approvals
Sked Social is the heavier option. Sked Social's pricing page lists Grow at $69 a month billed monthly ($690 a year) with 3 users and 6 profiles, and Accelerate at $199 a month ($1,990 a year) with 6 users, 10 profiles and approval workflows for people inside and outside your team. Every plan includes an inbox, analytics dashboards and publishing to 9 channels including X, and the feature list adds a visual planner, unlimited scheduling and a link in bio page. The limits: there is no free plan, the entry price is almost three times Later Starter, and a solo creator will not use most of it. Pick it when sign off from a client or a legal team is part of every post.
Every plan includes scheduling to every channel, AI that drafts captions in your brand's voice, live analytics dashboards, one inbox and mobile apps. The pricing page says posts publish automatically to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, X and Google Business Profile, Instagram Stories included, while Threads and Snapchat publish by notification. Sked Link is the link in bio page, with tracking pixel support.
Grow includes 6 profiles and each extra one is $8 a month, so 8 profiles come to $85 a month billed monthly ($69 plus 2 times $8). On Accelerate an extra profile is $10 and an extra user $15. Annual billing saves 17 percent, and Custom plans start at $249 a month billed annually. Sked Social suits an agency or a brand team where three or more people touch each post. A solo founder would pay for seats and an inbox nobody else opens.
Pros
- 3 users and 6 profiles on the entry plan
- Inbox, analytics dashboards and AI captions on every plan
- Client review links without a login on Accelerate
- Link in bio page with Sked Link
Cons
- No free plan, only a 14 day trial
- Entry price is $69 a month
- Approval workflows start at $199 a month
- Threads publishes by notification
Later Competitors Feature by Feature: Grid Planner, Link in Bio, Reels and Hashtags
Each cell was read on the vendor's own pricing page or help center in October 2026. A cell says "Not stated" where those pages do not confirm the feature. Later is the baseline, and the Spreadcast row reads differently because Spreadcast makes the posts and the other tools schedule them.
| Tool | Visual grid planner | Link in bio page | Reels and Stories | Hashtag tools | Analytics | AI captions | Networks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Later (baseline) | Visual Instagram Planner on every plan | Yes, on every plan. Later branding on Free | Reels on every plan. | Spreadcast | A calendar, with no grid preview | Not part of Spreadcast. An Instagram profile shows up to 5 links without a tool | Still image posts, designed and published for you. Keep an editor for Reels | No hashtag tool to manage: the caption arrives written | Basic post stats. Keep a planner beside it for reports | Yes. Spreadcast writes a caption for each network | 8, with X and Bluesky |
| Planoly | Yes, on every plan | Yes, on every paid plan | Reels auto post. Stories for Business accounts only | Hashtag Manager saves groups of hashtags | Not stated on the pricing page | AI Caption Writer and content ideas | 8, with X |

| Pallyy | Yes, on every plan | Yes, on paid plans | Reels on paid plans. Story posts listed on every plan | Hashtag lists on every plan | 30 days on Free, 5 years on paid plans | Yes, on paid plans | 10 listed, with X and Bluesky |
| Meta Business Suite | Shows your Instagram grid | Not stated | Schedules both. Stories keep stickers and a link | Not stated | Insights on content and audience | AI content ideas | Facebook and Instagram |
| Sked Social | Yes, a visual planner | Yes, Sked Link | Stories publish automatically. Reels not stated on the pricing page | Not stated | Dashboards on every plan, report export from Accelerate | Yes, on every plan | 9, with X. Threads by notification |
Instagram lets a third party tool publish for professional accounts only, which is why several cells name Business or Creator accounts. The section on what Instagram lets a scheduler publish, further down, explains the rule.
Later Alternative Free Plans, Side by Side
A free plan is the most common reason to search for a Later alternative. These are the limits each vendor publishes as of October 2026.
| Tool | What the free plan allows | What it leaves out |
|---|---|---|
| Later | 12 posts per profile a month, visual planner, a Link in Bio page | Instagram carousels and Stories, AI credits, platform analytics, a calendar beyond 2 weeks |
| Spreadcast | 1 app: Spreadcast designs every post from your listing, ready to download | Publishing for you, which starts on Pro, and posts without the small Spreadcast mark |
| Buffer | 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, AI assistant | A second user, more than 3 channels |
| Metricool | 1 brand, 20 scheduled posts a month, 30 days of analytics | LinkedIn and X, link in bio pages, PDF reports |
| Publer | 3 social accounts, 10 scheduled posts per account, 25 saved drafts | X, post history beyond 24 hours, bulk scheduling, analytics |
| Pallyy | 1 social set, 15 scheduled posts a month | Video, carousels and Reels, AI captions, the inbox, bio link pages |
| Planoly | 10 uploads a month in the mobile app | The web planner without a paid plan or trial |
| Meta Business Suite | Scheduling for Facebook and Instagram with a calendar and inbox | Every network Meta does not own |
Sked Social has no free plan. It offers a 14 day free trial without a credit card.
The Best Later Alternative for Each Need
Most people leave Later for one specific reason. Find yours below.
For an App With Nothing to Schedule
Spreadcast. It designs a post from your App Store listing when you ship an update, earn a 5 star review or pass a rating milestone, and publishes it to 8 networks. The free plan drafts every post and Pro is $29 a month flat. See the page for mobile apps.
For an Instagram Grid Planner
Planoly keeps the visual Instagram planner and removes the post cap for $16 a month. Pallyy includes its Instagram grid preview on the free plan. If you want an Instagram feed planner at no cost and only check the next few squares, Buffer's Grid Preview and Meta Business Suite both show the grid for free.
For Pinterest
Every scheduler here except Meta Business Suite publishes Pins, and so does Spreadcast. For a business that lives on Pinterest, Tailwind's Pin Scheduling and Creation plan costs $29.99 a month billed monthly or $17.99 billed annually for each Pinterest account.
For TikTok
Buffer, Metricool and Publer include TikTok on their free plans. Pallyy's free plan publishes images only, so TikTok video starts on Pro at $25 a month. Spreadcast publishes its still image posts to TikTok along with the other seven networks.
For a Link in Bio Tool
Buffer's Start Page and Publer's link in bio profile come with their free plans, and Later's own free plan keeps a Link in Bio page with Later branding on it. Planoly includes one on every paid plan, Pallyy from Pro and Metricool from Starter. Before you pay for a link in bio tool, check Instagram itself: a profile can show up to 5 links.
For a Free Plan
Buffer if you want 3 channels with X and Bluesky. Meta Business Suite if Facebook and Instagram are all you post to. Metricool if you want analytics with the schedule. Publer if you want a link in bio profile as well. The free plans table above lists every cap.
For Agencies
Pallyy charges a flat $10 a month for each extra client set. Metricool Starter covers 5 brands for $25 a month, and Sked Social adds client approvals on Accelerate at $199 a month. If your clients are app developers, Spreadcast Studio runs 5 apps for $79 a month with a separate brand for each. The page for agencies explains that setup.
Later Pricing in 2026: What Each Plan Costs and Whether Later Is Free
Later is a social media scheduler built around a visual Instagram planner, a media library and a Link in Bio page. It publishes to Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube Shorts and Snapchat. Later's pricing page shows three paid plans, each with a 14 day free trial. Later is also free to use at a small scale: Later's plan guide still describes a Free plan, and the plan reference gives its numbers. Prices are in US dollars before tax, as of October 11, 2026.
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly | Social sets | Posts per profile | Users | AI credits | Analytics history |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 1 | 12 a month | 1 | 0 | No platform analytics |
| Starter | $25 a month | $18.75 a month | 1 (8 profiles) | 30 a month | 1 | 5 a month | 3 months |
| Growth | $50 a month | $37.50 a month | 2 (16 profiles) | 180 a month | 2 | 50 a month | 1 year |
| Scale | $110 a month | $82.50 a month | 6 (48 profiles) | Unlimited | 4 | 100 a month | 2 years |
A social set holds one profile from each network, and drafts count toward the monthly post count. The Free plan leaves out Instagram carousels and Stories, Facebook Reels, hashtag suggestions and best time to post, allows 1 YouTube Short a month, and limits the calendar to 2 weeks back and 2 weeks ahead. On Growth and Scale an extra social set is $15 a month, an extra user $5 and 100 extra AI credits $5, billed monthly. One AI credit buys one caption or three content ideas. If you cancel a paid plan, Later's cancellation guide says the account returns to the Free plan when the billing cycle ends.
Later vs Planoly, Buffer, Metricool and Hootsuite
Five matchups come up most in search. Each row uses the prices and limits cited in the sections above, billed monthly unless it says otherwise. The single tool pages go deeper: Later, Buffer, Metricool and Hootsuite.
| Matchup | Pick Later if | Pick the other tool if |
|---|---|---|
| Later vs Spreadcast | You have photos and video ready and want to arrange them in a grid | You have an app and no posts. Spreadcast designs them and publishes them for you, for $29 a month flat |
| Later vs Planoly | You need Snapchat, up to 2 years of analytics or a social inbox, which Later adds on Growth | You post above 30 times a month per profile, want X in the set, or would rather pay $16 a month than $25 |
| Later vs Buffer | The grid is your main workspace and your Link in Bio page uses clickable posts | You want a free plan with 3 channels, need X, Bluesky or Mastodon, or run 1 to 3 channels for $6 to $18 a month |
| Later vs Metricool | You run one brand and plan it visually | You manage several brands, since Starter covers 5 for $25 a month, or you want competitor tracking and unlimited analytics history |
| Later vs Hootsuite | You are one person or a small team. Starter is $25 a month | You need a suite for a larger team and can pay $99 per user a month, billed annually, for up to 10 social accounts |
What Instagram Lets a Scheduler Publish Automatically
Every Instagram scheduler works through the same door, the Instagram API, so many differences between these tools come from Meta's rules. Meta's content publishing documentation says a third party app can publish single images, videos, Reels, Stories and carousels, and only for professional accounts. No tool can publish to a personal account, which is why Later and Buffer send a notification to your phone for one. Instagram's help center explains that a professional account is a Business or Creator account, and you can switch back to a personal one at any time.
The same documentation sets limits that every scheduler inherits. A carousel holds up to 10 items through the API, images must be JPEG files, shopping tags and filters are not supported, and an account can publish 100 posts through the API in a rolling 24 hours. Meta's media reference adds the sizes: an image between 4:5 and 1.91:1, a Reel from 3 seconds to 15 minutes, a Story video up to 60 seconds, and a caption of up to 2,200 characters.
That reference also names what a scheduler cannot add. Link, poll and location stickers cannot be published on a Story through the API, and music can only be tagged when it is original audio. So a Story that needs a link sticker or a poll goes out by notification: the tool sends the media and the caption to your phone at the scheduled time, and you add the sticker in the Instagram app.
Tools still differ at the edges. Later, Planoly and Publer say Stories publish automatically for Business accounts only. Buffer and Metricool list Stories for Business and Creator accounts. Meta Business Suite is Meta's own tool, so its Story editor keeps stickers and a link. If Stories are most of what you post, check that line before you pay for an Instagram planner app.
Spreadcast's posts are still images at 1080 by 1350, a 4:5 shape inside the range the API accepts, which is one reason it can publish them for you.
Free Instagram Scheduler Options Without a Third Party Tool
Two free Instagram scheduler options come from Meta itself, and for one account they may be enough. Instagram's help center says you can schedule Reels, photos and carousel posts in the Instagram app from a public account: up to 25 posts a day, up to 30 days in advance. Product tags, collaborative posts, sponsored posts and fundraisers do not work with scheduled content, and Stories are not on that list.
Meta Business Suite adds Stories, a calendar, a view of your Instagram grid, an inbox and insights, also for free. Neither option publishes to TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest or X, and neither lists a link in bio page. Those gaps are what Later and the tools above charge for.
If you post to Instagram and Facebook only, start with the free tools and move to a paid scheduler when you hit a wall you can name. If the wall is that nothing is ready to schedule, a planner will not fix it. For an app, the free Spreadcast plan drafts the posts, and the Instagram post generator page shows how they are built.
Does Instagram Have a Scheduler? How to Schedule and Find Scheduled Posts in the App
Yes. Instagram has its own free scheduler for posts, carousels and Reels, with the limits listed in the section above. These steps follow Instagram's help article on scheduled content as it read on October 17, 2026. The account has to be public.
- Step 1
Open the Create Screen
Tap Create at the top left, or swipe right anywhere in Feed, then choose Post or Reel and select your photo or video.
- Step 2
Write the Caption and Open More Options
Add the caption, effects or filters as usual, then tap More options. Leave out product tags, collaborators and sponsored post labels, since Instagram does not support them on scheduled content.
- Step 3
Turn On Schedule This Post
Switch on Schedule this post or Schedule this reel, choose the date and time, tap Done, then Back, then Schedule. The post keeps the privacy and audience settings your account had when you scheduled it.
- Step 4
Find Your Scheduled Posts
Go to your profile, tap Menu at the top right and, under Your insights and tools, tap Scheduled content. The same list opens from the create screen under Scheduled. There you can delete a post, edit it, reschedule it or share it now.
Instagram Scheduler for a Personal or Private Account
Searches for an Instagram planning app for a personal or private account come up often, and the answer depends on two separate rules.
The first rule is Instagram's own. Its scheduler asks for a public account, not a professional one, so a public personal account can schedule posts and Reels in the app with the steps above. A private account cannot, per Instagram's scheduling help article.
The second rule covers every outside tool. Meta's publishing documentation opens automatic publishing to professional accounts only, so no third party scheduler can post by itself to a personal account, public or private. What the planners offer instead is a reminder: Later's mobile app guide says posts for a personal profile go out by push notification, and Planoly lets any channel run as a reminder, where your phone buzzes at the set time and you publish in the Instagram app. A private personal account can still be planned this way in a grid, it just cannot be posted to without you.
If you want posts to go out while you sleep, switch to a professional account. Instagram calls a Business or Creator account a professional account, and you can switch back to personal later. Spreadcast publishes through the same Meta interface, so the Instagram account it posts to needs to be a business or creator account too.
Free Instagram Feed Planner Apps for Phone and Desktop
The best Instagram planner app for free depends on whether you plan on a phone or a computer and whether the free plan has to publish. These six cost nothing to start, each checked on its own pages on October 17, 2026.
| App | Free plan limit | Grid or feed view | Where it runs | Publishes by itself on the free plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Later Free | 12 posts per profile a month, drafts included | Visual Instagram Planner on every plan | iOS, Android and the browser. The free calendar shows 2 weeks back and 2 weeks ahead | Yes, single photo posts can auto publish on every plan for business and creator profiles. Carousels and Stories need a paid plan |
| Planoly Free | 10 posts a month for the workspace | Grid planning with placeholders | The pricing page places the free plan in the mobile app | Yes on linked channels, or a reminder on any channel |
| Preview Free | Unlimited posts, 1 user, 1 device | Drag and drop feed planner, plus Reels and TikTok planners | Phone app. The desktop planner is a Premium feature | No. Auto posting is on Premium at $12.50 a month billed yearly |
| Buffer Free | 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel | Grid Preview for professional Instagram accounts | Web dashboard | Yes, for professional accounts |
| Meta Business Suite | Free, Facebook and Instagram only | Shows your Instagram grid | Desktop and the Meta Business Suite app | Yes, posts, Stories and Reels |
| Instagram app | Free, public accounts only | No planner view, only a Scheduled content list | Phone | Yes, posts, carousels and Reels |
None of these makes the picture. A planner arranges posts you already have. If you have an app on the App Store, Spreadcast designs the posts from your listing and publishes them to Instagram and seven other networks, and its free plan drafts every one.
How to Choose an Instagram Scheduler to Replace Later
Five checks, in the order that removes the most options first.
- Step 1
Ask Who Makes the Posts
Every scheduler assumes the content exists. If the calendar has been empty for a month, a cheaper calendar will stay empty too. If you have an app, start with Spreadcast: it designs the posts from your App Store listing and publishes them for you. The article on why your scheduler is not the reason your feed is empty walks through it. If you already make your posts, the next four checks pick a scheduler.
- Step 2
Count Your Profiles and Brands
Pricing models differ more than prices. Later and Planoly sell social sets, Buffer and Publer charge per account, Metricool charges per brand and Sked Social per plan. One Instagram account and one TikTok account is cheapest on a per account tool. Six clients with five networks each is cheapest on a per brand or per set tool.
- Step 3
Count Your Posts per Month
Write down how many posts each profile really gets. Under 10 a month, a free plan from Buffer, Publer or Later covers you. Daily posting with Stories on top will pass Later Starter's 30 posts per profile, and that is the point where Planoly's unlimited uploads at $16 a month start to matter.
- Step 4
List the Networks You Need
If X or Bluesky is on the list, Later is out, and Buffer and Publer are in. If you only need Facebook and Instagram, Meta Business Suite is free. On Metricool, X costs an extra $10 a month per account.
- Step 5
Decide How Much the Grid Matters
A visual Instagram planner is worth paying for when the feed is your shop window. Later, Planoly, Pallyy and Sked Social build the workflow around it. Buffer, Metricool and Publer offer a feed preview as one view among several. If you have never rearranged nine squares, skip this check.
Where Spreadcast Fits for App Founders
Many people reading a list of Later app alternatives want a calendar. Others signed up for Later, connected the accounts and then never scheduled anything, because making the posts was the hard part. If you build an app, you are probably in the second group.
An app produces news on a schedule of its own. Each release has notes, each week brings ratings, and some reviews say what you wish your marketing said. Spreadcast reads those from the App Store listing, designs the posts and publishes them for you, so the feed keeps moving while you work on the next version. In a week with no update it drafts a post about one of the app's features.
Two rules keep that safe. You choose approve first or full autopilot. And a post that quotes a reviewer's words always waits for you, because Apple's ratings and reviews guidance allows reviews in marketing "only if permission from the reviewer is granted". A post that shows only the current rating can go out by itself.
Plans are simple. The free plan drafts every post for 1 app, ready to download. Pro is $29 a month flat, with design, captions and publishing to all 8 networks included. Studio is $79 a month for 5 apps and 3 seats. Details are on the pricing page.
Set that beside what a scheduler charges for eight accounts, billed monthly as of October 2026. Spreadcast Pro at $29 sits below three of them: eight accounts on Publer Professional come to $32, eight channels on Buffer Essentials to $48 (8 times $6), and eight profiles on Sked Social Grow to $85 ($69 plus 2 times $8). That is $3, $19 and $56 less. One social set costs $16 on Planoly Starter and $25 on Later Starter or Pallyy Pro, which is $13 or $4 under Spreadcast Pro, for a calendar with no posts in it yet.
The larger difference is what the money buys. Each of those prices pays for a place to put posts. None includes the time to design a post, write a caption for each network and remember to do it after every release. The $29 for Spreadcast includes that work. The guide on how to promote an app on social media covers what to post beyond updates, and the article on the real cost of designing social posts by hand looks at the time side.
How to Switch From Later to Another Scheduler
Later has no single export of a whole account, so a move is a handful of small jobs. Do them before the paid plan ends.
- Step 1
Check What Your Plan Ends With
Later's cancellation guide says a cancelled plan keeps its features until the end of the billing cycle and then drops to the Free plan. Scheduled posts above the free allowance will not publish after that, and analytics beyond the Free level go at once. Note the end date under Settings, then Subscription.
- Step 2
Export Your Analytics First
Instagram analytics export as a CSV file on Starter and up, and LinkedIn analytics on Growth and up, according to Later's plan reference. Do this before anything else, because the history leaves with the plan.
- Step 3
Download the Media Library
Later's media download guide gives two routes. On desktop you open an item and save it, one file at a time, at medium resolution. In the iOS app you can select many photos and download them together at full resolution. For a large library use the iOS app, or go back to your original files.
- Step 4
Rebuild the Link in Bio Page
A Link in Bio page lives inside Later, one for each social set, so it does not move with you. Export the email addresses it collected as a CSV file and copy each button and link into the new tool. On the day you switch, change the link on your Instagram and TikTok profiles. Buffer, Publer, Planoly, Pallyy and Metricool each have a link in bio page.
- Step 5
Reconnect Profiles and Move the Queue
Connect each profile to the new tool and schedule the next two weeks there. We found no export of scheduled posts in Later's help center, so plan to copy captions across by hand, starting with the posts that already have a date. Keep Instagram as a Business or Creator account so the new tool can publish automatically.
- Step 6
Run Both Tools for One Week
Keep Later active until the first week of posts has gone out from the new tool. Then cancel on desktop under Settings, then Subscription. A plan bought in Later's iOS app is cancelled through your Apple subscription settings.
Tools We Left Out and Why
Tailwind appears in many older lists of Later alternatives. As of October 2026 Tailwind's pricing page sells Pinterest plans only, priced per Pinterest account, with no mention of Instagram scheduling. It is a strong pick for Pinterest and no longer a replacement for Later. If Pinterest is your main channel, read Pinterest for app founders.
Hootsuite is a capable suite at a different budget. Hootsuite's plans page has no free plan, and its FAQ puts the Standard plan at $99 with up to 10 social accounts. That is about four times the price of Later Starter, which makes it a step up for a larger team more than an alternative. The Hootsuite comparison covers who it suits.
We also skipped tools whose prices or limits we could not confirm on the vendor's own page on the day we checked. A roundup with a wrong price is worse than a shorter roundup.
When Staying on Later Is the Right Call
Stay if Link in Bio is earning money. Later's version turns posts into clickable links and collects email addresses, and rebuilding that somewhere else costs time and loses the click history.
A legacy plan that suits you is another reason not to move. Later's plan reference separates plans started before July 1, 2025 from current ones, and older plans can have different limits. Check Settings, then Subscription, before you compare against the public price list.
Small limits rarely justify a switch. Moving from Starter to Growth costs $25 a month more on Later's price list. Moving tools costs a weekend of reconnecting accounts and rebuilding the media library. For a business that lives on Instagram, the upgrade is often cheaper than the move. Our Later comparison lists what each Later plan includes.
Staying does not rule out Spreadcast. An app team can keep Later for the grid and the one off posts and let Spreadcast run the recurring app posts.
How We Ranked These Later Alternatives
We make Spreadcast, so read this list knowing that. It comes first because it is the only tool here that makes the posts, which is a different job from the other seven. Those seven are ranked as replacements for Later on five things: the price of one social set or the nearest equivalent, how far the free plan goes, whether the tool has a visual Instagram planner, which networks it covers that Later dropped, and what it adds for teams.
Every price and limit was read on the vendor's own pricing page or help center on October 11, 2026, in US dollars, and each one is linked where it first appears. Where a page showed prices by region, we used the US dollar figure it displayed. Where a vendor's pages did not confirm a feature, the table says "Not stated". Review site scores played no part.
Prices change often in this market. Later's current plans date from July 1, 2025, and its support for X ended that August. If a number here no longer matches the vendor's page, trust the vendor's page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free alternative to Later?
If you have an app on the App Store, Spreadcast's free plan: it designs a post for every update, 5 star review and rating milestone, ready to download. For posts you make yourself it is Buffer for most people, since Buffer's free plan connects 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each, or Meta Business Suite if you only post to Facebook and Instagram.
Which Later alternatives have a visual Instagram planner?
Planoly, Pallyy and Sked Social build their workflow around a visual grid. Buffer has a Grid Preview, Metricool a feed preview and Publer an Instagram feed preview, and Meta Business Suite shows your Instagram grid as well.
What is the cheapest Later alternative?
Among paid schedulers, Publer Professional starts at $5 a month for 1 account and Buffer Essentials at $5 a month per channel billed yearly. Planoly at $16 a month is the cheapest plan with a full social set and a visual grid. If you have an app, Spreadcast Pro at $29 a month flat also makes the posts, and its free plan drafts every one.
Does Later have a free plan in 2026?
Yes. The pricing page shows only paid plans, but Later's plan reference lists a Free plan with 12 posts per profile a month. The Later pricing section above shows what it leaves out.
Which Later alternatives can post to X (Twitter)?
Buffer, Publer and Sked Social publish to X, and Planoly lists X as part of a social set. Spreadcast does not post to X. Publer supports it on paid plans only, and Metricool sells it as an add on at $10 a month per account. Later itself removed X in August 2025.
What is the best Later alternative for agencies?
If your clients are app developers, Spreadcast Studio covers 5 apps for $79 a month and designs and publishes the posts for you. For other clients, Pallyy offers 10 client sets and 3 users for $99 a month, Metricool charges per brand, and Sked Social has the deepest approval workflow.
What are the best alternatives to Later for Instagram?
If you have an app, Spreadcast: it designs your Instagram posts from the App Store listing and publishes them for you. If you plan the grid yourself, Planoly is the closest match at $16 a month, Buffer is the best free Instagram scheduler for one person, and Meta Business Suite is enough if Instagram and Facebook are all you post to.
Is there a Later alternative that makes the posts for you?
Yes, if you have an app on the App Store. Spreadcast designs the posts about your app from its listing, writes a caption for each network and publishes them for you. For a business without an app, the roundup of AI social media post generators compares tools that create content from a prompt or a website.
Prices, plans and features change. This comparison describes each product as its own site described it on the date shown under Sources. Check the vendor's site before you decide. Product names are trademarks of their owners.
