How to Promote an App on TikTok: Account, Formats, Ads and Rules

How to promote an app on TikTok with one person and no ad budget: the account type, the App Store link in your bio, video and photo formats, a weekly plan, app install ads, creators and the rules, from TikTok's own pages.

By Spreadcast · Updated October 17, 2026 · 40 min read

To promote an app on TikTok, set up a profile that says what the app does, post short vertical videos that show one job being done on the screen, add photo posts for updates and reviews, and get a link to your App Store page onto the profile as soon as TikTok allows it. Then read two numbers every week: how much of each video people watched, which TikTok shows in its analytics, and how many downloads the TikTok link sent, which App Store Connect shows for free.

This guide is for founders, indie developers and small studios who do their own TikTok app marketing. Every TikTok fact in it comes from TikTok's own pages (the Help Center, the Business Help Center, Creator Academy, TikTok for Developers, the Newsroom and the Community Guidelines), opened on October 13, 2026. TikTok changes limits often and several features differ by country, so open the linked page before you build a plan on a number. The same job across ten networks is covered in how to promote an app on social media.

How to promote an app on TikTok: the short version

  1. Pick the account type. A general account keeps the full music library and gets a profile link at 1,000 followers. A Verified Business Account gets the link without waiting, and loses the general music library.
  2. Write a bio that says what the app does in one line, and put the exact name of the app in it.
  3. Record the phone screen while the app does one job, start to finish, and talk over it. That clip is your first video.
  4. Post two or three videos a week and one photo post for each update, 5 star review or rating milestone.
  5. Turn on the content disclosure setting on every post that promotes your app. TikTok requires it even when the business is your own.
  6. Add an App Store campaign link to the profile when the account qualifies, so App Store Connect can count the downloads TikTok sent.
  7. Check retention and watched full video in TikTok Studio once a week, and make more of whatever people finished.
  8. Only then spend money: boost a video that already worked with Promote or Spark Ads before you build an app install campaign.

The rest of this guide takes each step in turn, with the limits TikTok publishes and the parts most guides skip: how the link in bio rules really work, what TikTok says about third party posting tools, and what iOS privacy rules do to ad reporting.

Who is on TikTok, and why it works for apps

Two numbers are worth knowing, and they come from different places. Pew Research Center's 2025 survey of 5,022 U.S. adults found that 37% use TikTok, up from 21% in 2021. In a separate Pew survey reported on the same page, 24% of U.S. adults said they use it every day, and roughly half of adults aged 18 to 29 do, compared with 5% of adults 65 and older. TikTok's own figure is larger because it counts differently: its announcement of the U.S. joint venture on January 23, 2026 speaks of more than 200 million Americans and 7.5 million businesses on the service.

Audience size is only half the reason TikTok suits a new app. The other half is how posts get shown, and TikTok describes that in public.

  • A new account can be shown to strangers. A TikTok Newsroom post from June 2020 states that neither follower count nor a history of high performing videos is a direct factor in recommendations. It is an old post, so read it as direction and not as a promise.
  • What viewers do counts most. TikTok's page on how it recommends content lists three groups of factors for the For You feed: user interactions (likes, shares, comments, watching in full or skipping), content information (sounds, hashtags, view counts, country) and user information (language, location, device). It adds that interactions, which may include time spent watching, are generally weighted more heavily than the rest.
  • Search is a second door. Creator Academy's article on search traffic, updated in August 2026, says Search values relevance over views and engagement. A small account with a clear video titled "plant watering reminder app" can be found by someone typing those words.
  • A screen recording is native here. The format people already watch on TikTok (a phone screen, a voice, text on top) is the cheapest thing an app developer can make.

TikTok also makes a quality claim about the installs it sends. TikTok's app promotion page, citing Adjust data for the United States from May 2022 to August 2023, says installs that came from TikTok showed 59% more in app engagement in their first week and a 39% lower uninstall rate than installs from other platforms. That is an ad seller quoting a measurement partner about its own ads, so treat it as a claim to test with your own app.

TikTok is a weaker fit when your users are mostly over 65, when the app is sold to companies through a sales call, or when nobody on the team can record a video each week. In those cases start with the store listing and the other channels in how to market an app.

TikTok has three account levels that matter to an app, and the choice decides which music you can use and when a link appears on your profile. The table combines TikTok's account types page from the Help Center with the account entitlements page in the Business Help Center, last updated in May 2026.

Account level, How you get it, Link on the profile, What else changes
Account levelHow you get itLink on the profileWhat else changes
General account (also called a personal account)It is the default when you sign upA website link once the account has at least 1,000 followersAccess to the general music library and the Commercial Music Library, creator analytics in TikTok Studio, Promote, and LIVE once you meet the age and follower rules
TikTok Account with Advanced AccessLink the account to a TikTok for Business account or to an unverified Business CenterYou can create and edit a bio link and app download links, but TikTok does not display them on the profileBasic analytics in Business Suite, automatic messages, Creative Hub and the post scheduler
Verified Business AccountPass business verification. TikTok's verification steps ask for a valid business license that matches your region, and review typically takes 1 to 5 business daysA website link, and an app download link that can be attached to the profile or to videosThe Commercial Music Library only, with no general music library. Business Suite, conversion analytics and a public business profile

TikTok's own advice is that anyone whose primary goal is promoting a business should use a Verified Business Account. The same page warns against switching back and forth, because the verification is not saved, and recommends two separate accounts if you want to post both business and personal content. Setting up a Business Account costs nothing: TikTok's Business Account page calls it free. Verification is a separate step and is not the blue check mark.

TikTok for indie developers: which account to choose

For a solo developer the practical choice comes down to paperwork. If you have a registered company and its license, verify the account: the link appears as soon as you are approved, and the missing chart songs rarely matter for a screen recording with your own voice. If you ship under your own name with no business documents, stay on a general account, use the app's name in the bio, and work toward 1,000 followers.

How to add an App Store link on TikTok (the link in bio requirements)

The link in bio rules confuse people because two things carry the name "business account". Switching the account type in settings is not the same as passing verification, and TikTok's entitlements page is explicit that an unverified account with advanced access can edit a bio link but cannot display it. There are two working routes.

  1. Route one, the general account: reach 1,000 followers. The website field then appears when you edit the profile, and you paste the link there.
  2. Route two, the Verified Business Account: in the app open Settings and privacy, then Account, then Business verification, and submit the business documents. After approval, add the website link in the profile editor. To show an app download link as well, open Business Suite and set up a Business Page. TikTok's Business Page instructions, updated in May 2026, list an app download link in the business information section, and limit the page to Verified Business Accounts without TikTok Shop, managed in the mobile app by someone over 18.
  3. Whichever route you take, do not paste the plain store link. Create a campaign link first so the downloads are counted. Apple's campaign links help page explains that you name the campaign in App Store Connect (up to 30 characters, for example "tiktok bio") and Apple adds it to the link. Our free App Store campaign link generator builds the same link in a browser.

Until the link exists, the app's name has to do the work. Put the exact name in the bio, show it as text in every video, and say "search for it on the App Store" out loud. Then search for that name on your own phone. If the app does not come up first for its own name, fix the listing before you post another video. The basics are in this guide to App Store optimization.

The bio, the name and the profile picture

A visitor who liked one video decides in a few seconds whether to follow or to look for the app. Use the app icon as the profile picture, the app's name as the account name, and one line that says what it does and for whom. Three real profiles, as they looked on October 13, 2026, show the range. Duolingo's TikTok profile has 18.2 million followers, a seasonal joke for a bio and a link to its website. Finch's profile, a self care app with about 482,000 followers, uses the bio to say what the app is and links to a page of links. Tiimo's profile, a planner app with under 8,000 followers, spends its one line on who the app is for. A famous brand can afford the joke. A new app should copy the smaller two.

TikTok formats for an app: video, photo mode carousels, Stories and LIVE

TikTok is no longer only video. You can post a video, a photo post that viewers swipe through (often called photo mode or a carousel), a text post, a Story and a LIVE. The limits below are the ones TikTok publishes, with the page each one comes from.

Format, Limits on TikTok's pages, What it suits for an app
FormatLimits on TikTok's pagesWhat it suits for an app
VideoTikTok's camera help page allows up to 10 minutes recorded in the app and up to 60 minutes uploaded. TikTok's video ad specifications, updated in June 2026, recommend vertical 9:16 at 540 by 960 pixels or larger, and TikTok's creative best practices ask for 720p or higher. A phone screen recording clears both.Demos, problem then solution clips, founder updates, replies to comments. This is where reach comes from.
Photo post (photo mode carousel)TikTok's help page on making a post allows up to 35 photos in one post, with sound, text and stickers on top. For posts sent through a connected tool, TikTok's developer documentation accepts JPEG or WebP images up to 1080p and 20 MB each, and the photo post reference allows a title of 90 characters and a description of 4,000.Update announcements, a review, a rating milestone, a feature explained in three to six swipes, before and after screens.
StoryTikTok's Stories help page says a Story stays visible for 24 hours and can be seen from your profile, the inbox and the For You and Following feeds. Highlights keep chosen Stories on the profile."Version 2.1 is in review", a bug you just fixed, a quick thank you. Low effort, short life.
LIVETikTok's LIVE help page requires you to be 18 or older and to have 1,000 followers, and notes the follower number may vary across regions.A launch day question and answer session or a build session, once the account is big enough.

TikTok photo mode carousel: sizes, counts and when to use it

TikTok's Help Center gives a count for photo posts (35) but no pixel size, so the best published guides are the developer limit of 1080p and TikTok's carousel ad specifications, updated in September 2026, which list 720 by 1280 pixels for a vertical image. A 1080 by 1920 image fills the screen. A 1080 by 1350 image, the 4:5 shape used on Instagram, is shorter than the screen and shows with space above and below, which is fine for an announcement and saves you making a second file. Every network's dimensions are in the social media image sizes reference.

Be honest with yourself about what photo posts are for. In Buffer's content format study, published in March 2026, TikTok videos had a median engagement rate of 3.39% against 1.92% for photo posts and carousels. Video is how strangers find you. Photo posts are how the profile stays current between videos, and they take minutes. An account that posts a still for every update, review and milestone never looks abandoned, and the visitor who arrives from a video sees an app that is alive.

A carousel that works for an app has one idea per image and reads without sound: image one states the problem in six words, images two to four show the screens that solve it, and the last image carries the app name and the words "available on the App Store". Add your own sound or a track from the Commercial Music Library, since TikTok lets a photo post carry sound while people swipe.

How to promote an app on TikTok for free: seven formats that work

Free promotion on TikTok is a small set of repeatable video shapes, made again every week. The examples use an invented app called Dripline, a plant watering reminder for iPhone made by one developer. The numbers and names in the examples are made up. Copy the shapes.

1. The screen recording demo

One job, start to result, in 15 to 40 seconds. Record the screen while you add a plant in Dripline, set its schedule and get the first reminder, and talk over it in plain words. Text on screen in the first second: "I killed four plants before I built this." The last frame shows the app name. This is the format to master first, because every other one reuses the recording.

2. Problem, then solution

Open on the problem filmed in the real world: a brown fern on a windowsill, three seconds. Cut to the phone and show the fix. The viewer has to recognize the problem as their own before the app appears, so film the problem and do not describe it. End with what changed: "Six weeks later, same fern."

3. Building in public, from the founder

You, to the camera or over a screen recording of the code editor, telling one true thing about the week: "This feature took me nine days and one person asked for it." These clips sell the maker, and on TikTok people download apps from makers they like. Keep a running series title on screen ("Building a plant app alone, week 14") so a new viewer understands there is more.

4. A user review on screen

Show a real review and react to it, or show the feature the reviewer praised. Two Apple rules apply. Apple's ratings and reviews guidance allows a customer review in marketing only with the reviewer's permission, and allows your rating only while it reflects the current rating. So ask the reviewer before quoting their words, or show the star average alone, which needs no permission as long as it is today's number. More ways to earn reviews worth showing are in how to get App Store reviews.

5. The update announcement

Every release is a post, and it is the one format where a photo post is as good as a video. Three images: what is new in five words, the changed screen, the app name. For a video version, record the new feature for 15 seconds and say what the user can do now that they could not do last week. Wording to adapt is in these app update announcement examples, and the app release notes generator turns a changelog into the two or three points worth showing.

6. Before and after

The old way on the left or first, the app second: a paper note stuck to a plant pot, then the reminder arriving on the lock screen. It also works for the app itself, with the first ugly version of a screen next to the current one. The contrast does the explaining, so this format needs almost no words.

7. Replying to comments with a video

When someone asks "does it work for succulents?", answer with a new video. TikTok has had this feature since 2020: its Newsroom tutorial on replying to comments with video describes tapping the comment, tapping the camera icon and recording, with the comment attached to the clip as a sticker. The reply is published as a new video on your profile. Every question is a brief for the next clip, and Creator Academy's article on For You feed traffic recommends exactly this: answer comments quickly and use them when you plan content.

How to record an app demo on an iPhone

  1. Prepare a demo account with realistic data and turn on Do Not Disturb, so no notification slides into the recording.
  2. Open Control Center, press and hold the Record button and turn the microphone on. Apple's screen recording instructions describe a three second countdown before recording starts.
  3. Do the one job without stopping. If you make a mistake, start again. A clean 20 second take beats an edited 40 second one.
  4. Stop from the red indicator at the top of the screen. The clip is saved to Photos, where you can trim the start and the end.
  5. Upload the clean file to TikTok and add text and captions there. Keep the original, because the same file becomes an Instagram Reel later.

The first three seconds, captions and search words

  • The opening. TikTok's creative best practices, written for ads and updated in June 2025, ask for the value proposition in the first 3 seconds and a hook within the first 6. Creator Academy gives the same advice for organic videos: hook viewers in the first three seconds. For an app, the hook is the problem or the result, never the logo.
  • Sound. The same best practices say to use sound or music. Your own voice counts, and it sidesteps every music licensing question.
  • Words people search. Creator Academy's search article says to put relevant keywords in the video, the subtitles and the caption, and to make the title and cover show the topic. It also warns that stacking irrelevant keywords hurts. Write the caption the way a person would type the need: "plant watering reminder app for iPhone".
  • Captions on screen. Many people watch with the sound off. TikTok Studio lists automatic captions among its editing tools, so there is no reason to skip them.
  • The call to action. End with one instruction that matches what the account can do today: "link on my profile" if you have the link, "search Dripline on the App Store" if you do not.

How to market an app on TikTok without showing your face

Five of the seven formats never need a face: the demo, the update, the before and after, the review and the reply to a comment are all a screen with a voice or with text. If you do not want to use your voice either, write the script as text on screen, two short lines at a time, and add a track from the Commercial Music Library. The building in public format is the only one that works better with a person in it.

How to go viral on TikTok with an app, honestly

Nobody outside TikTok knows the formula, and anyone selling one is guessing. What TikTok has published is narrower, and you can act on it.

  • Watch time and completion matter most. TikTok's recommendation page says interactions, including time spent watching, generally weigh more than the other factors. A 20 second demo that 60% of viewers finish is in better shape than a 90 second one that most people leave.
  • Trends help if you bend them to your niche. Creator Academy's For You feed article, updated in August 2026, suggests mixing trend videos into your schedule with your own twist, and gives the example of a cake decorator who joins a red carpet trend by decorating a cake after an outfit. For Dripline, a "things I stopped doing" trend becomes "things I stopped doing to my plants".
  • A clear niche tells the system who to show you to. Creator Academy says to choose a specific niche and to use the topics, hashtags and sounds your community already uses.
  • Volume gives you more chances, not better odds per video. Creator Academy's advice is simply to post more often, because each video is another opportunity for the system to place your content. Buffer's posting frequency guide, published in January 2026, found the same pattern from outside: accounts posting 2 to 5 times a week got up to 17% more views per post than accounts posting once, while median views stayed roughly flat. More posts mostly means more shots at an outlier.
  • Low views do not mean you are punished. TikTok's For You feed eligibility standards, in the Community Guidelines that took effect on September 24, 2026, say a video with few views has not necessarily broken a rule, and that analytics show whether a video was made ineligible for recommendation.

One viral video is also worth less to an app than it looks. A clip that reaches 400,000 people who do not own plants sends fewer downloads than a clip that reaches 9,000 people who do. Aim for the right viewer finishing the video, and let the big numbers happen when they happen.

A TikTok posting plan for one person

TikTok does not publish a number of posts per week. Its help page on growing your audience says to upload high quality content on a regular basis, and Creator Academy says to post more often, with no figure attached. The closest thing to evidence is Buffer's guide above, which recommends 2 to 5 TikToks a week and suggests starting with two. For one person with an app to build, two or three videos and one photo post a week is a plan you can still be running in month three.

Week, Videos to post, Photo posts, Account work, What to check on Sunday
WeekVideos to postPhoto postsAccount workWhat to check on Sunday
1A screen recording demo, and a clip on why you built the appA three image post: the problem, the main screen, the app nameChoose the account type, write the bio, start business verification if you have the documentsDo the videos play with captions, and does the app come up when you search its name on the App Store
2A problem then solution clip, a second demo of a different job, a reply to the first real commentOne feature explained in four swipesFollow 20 accounts in your niche and comment where you have something to addRetention on each video: the second where most people left
3A before and after, a building in public update, a reply to a commentYour current rating, or a review quoted with permissionTurn the best clip so far into the pinned videoWhich video brought profile views, and what its first three seconds were
4A demo of the feature people asked about most, and a clip announcing an update, even a small oneThe update announcementAdd the campaign link if the account now qualifiesViews by traffic source and search queries, and downloads on the campaign link
5 to 8Repeat the two shapes with the best retention, and test one new shape a weekOne for every update, review and milestoneReuse each clean recording as an Instagram ReelFollowers toward 1,000, and first time downloads per week

Budget about three hours a week: an hour to record three clips in one sitting, an hour to caption and post them across the week, and ten minutes a day for comments. For timing, Buffer's best time to post study, published in March 2026 and covering 7.1 million TikTok posts, found the top slot was Sunday at 9 a.m. local time, followed by Monday at 1 p.m., with evenings from 6 to 11 p.m. strong on every day and Wednesday the weakest day. Treat that as a starting schedule and replace it with your own viewers' active times once TikTok shows them.

Scheduling inside TikTok has limits worth knowing before you rely on it. TikTok's help page on scheduling a video describes it as a desktop feature for Business Accounts or accounts with 10,000 followers or more, lets you schedule between 15 minutes and 10 days ahead, and does not let you edit a scheduled post, only delete it. The account entitlements page lists the post scheduler among the tools an account gets with advanced access. The same clips reused for Instagram are covered in how to promote an app on Instagram.

What to measure in TikTok analytics

TikTok's analytics live in TikTok Studio, in the app or on the web. Creator Academy's analytics guide, updated on October 13, 2026, describes date ranges of 7, 28, 60 and 365 days and the numbers below. Two practical notes from the Help Center: an account needs at least one public post before analytics appear, and TikTok's page on posts that are not getting views says analytics data may take 1 to 2 days to update.

Number, Where it is, What it tells you
NumberWhere it isWhat it tells you
Retention rateEach video's analyticsThe percentage of the video people watched, with the points where they left. If most leave at second 4, the opening is the problem.
Watched full videoEach video's analyticsThe share who reached the last seconds. Compare it only between videos of similar length.
Average watch timeEach video's analyticsHow long a typical viewer stayed. Use it to decide how long your next demo should be.
Traffic source and search queriesOverview tabWhether views came from the For You feed, search or your profile, and which searches led to you. Search queries are free keyword research for captions.
Profile viewsOverview tabHow many viewers were curious enough to look at the account. This is the step before the link.
Most active timesViewers tabWhen your viewers were on TikTok during the last 7 days. Post shortly before those hours.
First time downloads on the campaign linkApp Store Connect, under AnalyticsWhat TikTok actually sent. Apple counts a download made within 24 hours of the tap and shows a number once it reaches 5.

The campaign link undercounts, because many people watch a video, close TikTok and type the app's name into the App Store. Those downloads land under App Store search. Compare search downloads on days you posted with days you did not, and read the two numbers together. More ways to raise the total are in how to get app downloads.

TikTok ads for apps: Promote, Spark Ads and app install campaigns

Paid promotion on TikTok comes in three sizes. Start with the smallest that answers your question, and never pay to show a video that failed for free.

Tool, What it is, Minimum budget on TikTok's pages, Use it when
ToolWhat it isMinimum budget on TikTok's pagesUse it when
PromoteA boost button inside the TikTok app. TikTok's Promote help page says you must be 18 or older, the post must be public and use original sound or sound cleared for commercial use, and it works on videos and photo posts but not on Stories. The help page states no minimum. You choose a promotion pack or a custom budget and duration. One video did well and you want to see what a small push does to profile visits and link taps.
Spark AdsAn ad made from an organic post, yours or a creator's. TikTok's Spark Ads page, updated in June 2026, says the views, likes, comments, shares and follows from the ad stay on the original post, and lists app promotion among the supported objectives.Runs inside TikTok Ads Manager, so the Ads Manager minimums apply. You want installs from a clip that already proved itself, and you want the engagement to build up on your own account.
App install campaignA campaign with the App Promotion objective in TikTok Ads Manager. TikTok's app promotion instructions list the steps: choose the objective, choose installs or retargeting, select the app, define the audience, set the budget and optimization goal, publish.TikTok's budget page, updated in July 2026, says the daily budget must exceed $50 for a campaign and $20 for an ad group. You have install tracking in place and enough budget to let the campaign learn.

Put those minimums into a sum before you start. A campaign that has to spend more than $50 a day costs more than $350 for a seven day test (7 times $50). At the ad group level TikTok's own example is a 31 day lifetime budget: 31 days times the $20 minimum is $620. Those are floors. TikTok publishes no price per install, because the auction and your own listing's conversion rate set it.

Promote has two details that catch people, both from TikTok's Promote help page. Paying with Coins, Apple Pay or Google Pay can add a service fee that the page puts at typically around 30%, set by Apple or Google. And the results shown on each promotion pack are estimates based on past performance, which TikTok says it cannot guarantee.

How to use TikTok Promote for an app

Promote is the cheapest way to learn whether money moves a video that already did well for free, and for an app the useful goal is traffic to your listing. TikTok's Business Help Center page on finding Promote, updated in July 2026, lists four kinds of goal: Boost account (views, followers, profile views), Get leads, Get sales, and Boost LIVE. The one that sends people to the App Store sits under Get sales.

  1. Open the post you want to push, tap the three dots and tap Promote. You can also reach it from your profile: open the menu, then TikTok Studio or Business suite, then Promote.
  2. Choose Get sales, then More website visits. TikTok's setup page for website visits asks for a URL and a call to action at this step. Paste an App Store campaign link named for this test, such as "tiktok promote", so App Store Connect counts what the promotion sent apart from your bio link.
  3. Select the creatives. The same page lets you pick videos or photos, so a photo post announcing an update can be promoted as well as a demo.
  4. Pick a promotion pack or build your own: choose the default audience or create one, then set the budget and duration. The Help Center lists apps and games among the interest tags you can target, with options that vary by region.
  5. Review the order and pay. TikTok notifies you once the post is approved, and the promotion runs until the duration you chose is over.

Skip the More website conversions option. The same page says it needs Promote connected to TikTok Ads Manager and the TikTok Pixel installed on a website, which measures actions on a web page and not installs from the App Store. When you are ready to pay for installs themselves, that is the app install campaign described below.

How to promote on TikTok from a computer, without the Apple fee

Yes, you can promote a TikTok from a PC. The Business Help Center page above gives a web address for Promote, tiktok.com/promote/web/main, alongside the routes inside the app. The reason to use it is the fee. TikTok's page on payment methods for Promote, updated in September 2025, has a table of where extra mobile fees apply: they do when you pay in the iPhone app with Apple Pay or TikTok Coins, and on Android with Google Pay in the EU region or Coins, and they do not on the web, where you can pay with Coins, a card, a bank transfer, a digital wallet or your Promote balance.

  • Money that comes back stays inside TikTok at first. When an order closes early or fails review, the same payment page says the unused amount goes to your Promote balance, which you can spend on a later promotion.
  • Withdrawing that balance depends on how you paid. On iPhone, an amount paid directly with Apple Pay cannot be withdrawn from the Promote balance and follows Apple's rules instead. On Android and in European countries there is a Withdrawal button.
  • Connecting Promote to Ads Manager changes the rules again. After the integration you can pay from your Ads Manager balance, but the Promote balance can no longer be withdrawn, only spent.
  • Coupons are gone once used. TikTok's Promote help page says a coupon used on an order that started to run is not returned, even if you end the order early.

TikTok Promote not working: what to check

Most failed promotions come down to one of a few rules on TikTok's Promote help page. Work down this list before you contact support.

TikTok app install ads: what you need before the first campaign

  • Event tracking. TikTok's app promotion instructions name one requirement besides an ad account: event tracking set up for your app in Ads Manager, so TikTok can see installs and actions.
  • A measurement route. TikTok's mobile app advertising guide says to connect the app through a mobile measurement partner or TikTok's Events API. A measurement partner is a paid third party service, so price it before you commit.
  • A goal. An App Install campaign finds new users, and App Retargeting brings back people who already installed. You can optimize for installs or for an action inside the app, such as a purchase.
  • Several versions of the ad. TikTok's creative best practices recommend 3 to 5 creatives per ad group with big differences between them. The app advertising guide adds: catch attention within two seconds, change one element per test, and refresh creative every one to two weeks.
  • A page between the ad and the store, for iOS. TikTok's App Profile Page is an instant page that pulls your app's name, description and images from the App Store and shows a button to visit it. TikTok offers it on iOS 14 dedicated campaigns.

How TikTok Spark Ads work, and what a Spark code is

To run your own post as a Spark Ad you link your TikTok account to the ad account and pick the post. To run a creator's post, the creator gives you a code. TikTok's Spark Ads creation guide, updated in June 2026, describes the creator's side: open the video, tap the three dots, tap Ad settings, and tap Generate to get the post code. You paste the code into Ads Manager, and you can authorize up to 20 codes at once. The authorization has an end date, and the Spark Ads page notes a post cannot be deleted from the organic account until it is taken out of the ad. Agree on the authorization period with a creator in writing before the video goes up.

What SKAdNetwork means for iOS measurement, in plain words

On iPhone, an ad network is not allowed to follow one person from an ad to an install without that person's permission. Apple's answer is a system that reports installs in bulk. Apple's ad attribution page describes it under its current name, AdAttributionKit, which builds on the older SKAdNetwork (often shortened to SKAN). Apple itself tells the ad network that an install came from a campaign, with a signed message, and does not reveal who the user was.

  • Credit goes to a tapped ad if the install happens within 30 days, or to an ad that was only viewed if the install happens within 24 hours, according to Apple's page.
  • The message arrives late on purpose. Apple says postbacks come 24 to 48 hours after the person opens the app.
  • Small campaigns get less detail. Apple withholds the conversion value, the part that says what the user did after installing, until enough installs are attributed to an ad. Apple calls this crowd anonymity.
  • TikTok adds its own delay on top. TikTok's iOS 14 reporting page, updated in August 2026, says SKAN conversions are reported with a random delay of up to 72 hours, recommends making no changes for the first 72 hours of a campaign, and says these results cannot be broken down by country, gender, operating system or age.
  • It needs its own kind of campaign. TikTok's page on iOS 14.5 dedicated campaigns, last updated in February 2025, says an app install campaign reaches devices on iOS 14.5 and later only as a dedicated campaign, which requires a measurement partner that supports SKAdNetwork, and it refers to a quota of 15 such campaigns.

What this means in practice: on iOS you will not see who installed, the numbers will be late, and a small daily budget produces reports with gaps in them. Judge an iOS campaign over a week, never by the hour, and keep App Store Connect open beside Ads Manager as a second opinion.

Working with creators through TikTok One

TikTok's creator marketplace is now part of a product called TikTok One. TikTok's help page on TikTok One describes it as the place where creators, advertisers and brands collaborate, and says it includes the Creative Center, the Creator Marketplace and the Creative Exchange. The page lists criteria for joining: an account in good standing, age 18 or older, at least 10,000 followers, at least 1,000 post views in the last 30 days and 3 posts in the last 30 days, with the follower number varying by region. For Business Accounts it is available in a web browser only.

  • Finding people. TikTok's guide to finding creators, updated in June 2026, describes searching by username or keyword, then filtering by country, follower count, language, audience age and gender, median video views and engagement rate. For a creator who is not on TikTok One, a Lite project gives you an invite link.
  • Choosing. For an app, the audience matters more than the follower count. A creator with 12,000 followers who all keep houseplants is worth more to Dripline than a comedian with a million.
  • Linking the app. TikTok's app download anchor, on a page updated in September 2026, attaches a link to your app inside the creator's video. It works on organic views only, is removed when the video runs as an ad, covers one country per anchor and goes through a review that usually takes up to 12 hours.
  • Extending what works. When a creator's clip performs, ask for a Spark code and run it as an app install ad.

One published example shows the whole chain. In TikTok's case study of Snake.io, the game's maker picked two creators through the Creator Marketplace and ran their videos as Spark Ads in app install campaigns. TikTok reports 67% more installs in the United States within two weeks, at a cost per install 50% below the bid on the iOS campaign. It is TikTok's own case study of an established game with more than 100 million downloads, so read it for the method and not for the numbers.

Disclosure: TikTok's branded content policy and the FTC

A creator's video about your app is branded content the moment they receive anything for it. TikTok's Branded Content Policy, in the version effective August 31, 2026, counts payment, a gifted product or service, a commission and an ambassador relationship. The creator must turn on the commercial content disclosure setting, and the post is then labeled as a paid partnership. The policy also requires the product to be clear from the video or caption itself, without sending viewers to a profile or a link, and bans false or misleading claims.

Check your category before you pay anyone. The same policy treats dating apps and financial services as restricted industries: creators may post about them only when invited by an approved brand, the brand needs a registered business account and permission from TikTok, and the partnership has to run through TikTok One. It prohibits branded content for weight loss products and services, and for therapy and telehealth services. A finance app, a dating app or a weight loss app faces rules that a plant app does not.

U.S. law sits on top of TikTok's label. The FTC's guide for social media influencers says a financial relationship, including free or discounted products, has to be disclosed, that in a video the disclosure belongs in the video and not only in the description, and that vague tags such as "sp", "spon" or "collab" are not enough. It also warns against assuming a platform's disclosure tool is sufficient. Ask every creator to say "ad" or "sponsored" out loud as well as switching on the label.

TikTok rules every app account should know

Rule, What TikTok's page says, What to do
RuleWhat TikTok's page saysWhat to do
Content disclosure for your own appTikTok's page on promoting a brand, product or service requires the content disclosure setting on any post that promotes a business, including your own. The post is labeled Promotional content, the label cannot be changed after posting, and TikTok says it does not affect distribution. Posts without it may be removed or restricted.Turn it on for every post about the app and choose Your brand.
AI generated contentTikTok's page on AI generated content requires a label on AI generated content that contains realistic images, audio or video, and encourages one on anything fully generated or significantly edited by AI. A label TikTok applies automatically cannot be removed, and TikTok says the label does not affect distribution.Label an AI voiceover that sounds like a real person and any realistic generated scene. A plain screen recording is not AI content.
Commercial musicTikTok's page on commercial use of music recommends using only the Commercial Music Library when a post promotes a brand, because TikTok's other music licenses do not cover commercial use. The library's own page counts 1 million songs, free for businesses.Use your voice, your own sound or a library track. A chart song under a demo is a risk, and it blocks Promote later.
Fake engagement and automationTikTok's Community Guidelines on integrity and authenticity, effective September 24, 2026, do not allow services that artificially boost engagement, fake reviews or spam, and say TikTok removes fake likes and followers. One sentence is blunt: "We strictly prohibit automation tools, scripts, or other tricks designed to bypass our systems."Do not buy followers to reach 1,000, do not join like for like groups, and do not use bots that follow or comment for you.
Reused contentThe same guidelines make content ineligible for the For You feed when it includes unoriginal or reused material with nothing new added.Post your own recordings. If you reuse a clip from another network, upload the clean file without another app's watermark.
Third party tools that post for youTikTok's content sharing guidelines for developers say a connected app may only send content to TikTok after the user has expressly consented to the upload, must let the user edit the text first, and must not add its own logo or watermark. They also describe a cap of around 15 posts a day per creator account, shared across all tools that post directly.Expect an approved tool to show you each post and ask before it goes out. A tool that posts to TikTok with no consent step is breaking TikTok's terms, and your account carries the risk.
Reviews and ratings in postsThis rule is Apple's: a quoted review needs the reviewer's permission and a rating has to be current.Ask before quoting, and remake rating graphics when the number changes. The full set is in the App Store marketing guidelines reference.

Mistakes to avoid when you promote an app on TikTok

  • Opening on the logo or a title card. The first three seconds are the only part most viewers see, so start on the problem or the result.
  • Switching to a business account and expecting the link to appear. The link shows for Verified Business Accounts and for general accounts with 1,000 followers. An unverified business account sits between the two with no link.
  • A chart song under a promotional video. It is outside the license TikTok holds for commercial use, and Promote will ask you to change the sound.
  • Forgetting the disclosure setting on your own app. It takes one tap, and TikTok says it does not reduce reach.
  • Buying followers to reach the 1,000 needed for the link or LIVE. TikTok removes fake followers and can restrict the account, which costs you the real ones too.
  • A plain App Store link with no campaign name. You will never know what TikTok sent.
  • Judging by views. A video with 900 views and 40 profile visits did more for the app than one with 30,000 views and 12.
  • Paying for ads before any organic video has worked. The ad system multiplies what the creative already does. It cannot fix a clip people skip.
  • Changing an iOS campaign every day. With reports that arrive up to 72 hours late, daily edits are made on numbers that are not in yet.
  • A store listing that does not match the video. If the clip sold reminders, the first screenshot on the listing should show a reminder.
  • Stopping after two weeks. Most accounts post six videos, see small numbers and quit just before they would have learned which shape works.

How long TikTok takes to work for an app

There is no honest fixed answer, and TikTok does not give one. What can be said from the published facts is how long each piece takes to become readable. Analytics lag by one to two days. A campaign link needs a full day to appear in App Store Connect and at least five downloads before it shows a number. The profile link needs 1,000 followers on a general account or up to 5 business days of verification on a business one. An iOS ad campaign needs 72 hours before its first numbers are complete.

Put together, the first month is mostly setup and learning: you find out which opening holds people and which video shape you can make every week. Plan on 8 to 12 weeks of two or three videos a week before you decide whether TikTok earns its place, and expect most videos in that time to stay small, because Buffer found that the typical video's views do not rise with posting frequency. The 8 to 12 weeks is our rule of thumb, drawn from the lags above. It is not a TikTok number.

Some apps never get there, and it is better to know why than to keep posting. If retention is poor on every video after 20 attempts, the problem is usually that the app's value takes too long to show on a screen. Try the problem first format once more, then put the hours into search ads, the listing or the free channels in how to promote an app for free.

Where Spreadcast fits on TikTok

Spreadcast covers the photo post half of this plan for apps on the App Store. You paste your App Store link once at the start page, and Spreadcast checks the public listing every day. When you ship an update, receive a new 5 star review or pass a rating milestone, it designs a 1080 by 1350 still image post from your icon, screenshots and colors and writes a caption for each network. For TikTok it prepares a photo post and asks you, in the post editor, who can see it and whether comments, Duets and Stitches are allowed, which are the choices TikTok's content sharing guidelines ask every posting tool to show. One limit matters here: TikTok only lets an app post publicly after TikTok has audited it, and until it approves Spreadcast, TikTok accepts its posts only for accounts set to private, visible to the account owner alone. The TikTok MCP server guide explains that audit. The same post goes to Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram and Discord, plus YouTube for video posts, and a post that quotes a reviewer always waits for your approval.

That leaves you the part only you can do. Spreadcast makes still images, so recording the demos, replying to comments with video and running ads stay with you, and the hours you used to spend on announcement graphics go into filming. The free plan drafts every post for you to download, so you can upload the photo post to TikTok yourself, and Pro is $29 a month flat with design, captions and publishing included, which is less than one day of the $50 minimum TikTok sets for an ad campaign. There is more on how the product works in the AI social media manager overview and on the page for mobile apps.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I promote my app on TikTok for free?

Post two or three short screen recordings a week that each show one job being done in the app, add a photo post for every update, review and milestone, and reply to questions with new videos. Put the exact app name in your bio and on screen until the account qualifies for a profile link. None of this costs money, only about three hours a week.

Can I put an App Store link in my TikTok bio without 1,000 followers?

Only with a Verified Business Account. TikTok's account types page gives a general account a website link at 1,000 followers and lets Verified Business Accounts post one, and verification needs business documents and typically 1 to 5 business days. Switching to a business account without verifying does not show a link.

Should I use a personal or a Business account to promote an app on TikTok?

If you have a registered business, verify it: you get the profile link and an app download link right away, and you give up the general music library. If you publish under your own name with no business documents, stay on a general account and work toward 1,000 followers. TikTok advises against switching back and forth.

How much do TikTok ads for apps cost?

TikTok publishes minimum budgets, not prices. As of its July 2026 update, TikTok's budget page requires a daily budget above $50 for a campaign and above $20 for an ad group, so a seven day test costs more than $350. The cost per install is set by auction. Promote, the boost button in the app, has no stated minimum.

What are TikTok Spark Ads, and do they work for app installs?

Spark Ads turn an existing organic post, yours or a creator's, into an ad, and the likes, comments and follows stay on the original post. TikTok's Spark Ads page lists app promotion among the supported objectives. For a creator's post you need a code the creator generates from the video's ad settings.

How often should I post on TikTok to promote an app?

TikTok gives no number. Its Creator Academy only says to post more often and regularly. Buffer's frequency guide recommends 2 to 5 posts a week and found up to 17% more views per post in that range than at one a week. Two or three videos plus one photo post is realistic for one person.

Can I promote an app on TikTok without showing my face?

Yes. A screen recording with your voice or with text on screen is the most common format for apps, and demos, update announcements, before and after clips and replies to comments all work that way. Add automatic captions so the video reads with the sound off.

Do photo posts work on TikTok, or do I need video?

You need both. In Buffer's format study, TikTok videos had a median engagement rate of 3.39% against 1.92% for photo posts and carousels, so video is where new viewers come from. Photo posts, which hold up to 35 images, are the quick way to announce an update or show a review so the profile stays current.
