What the App Store Marketing Guidelines Are and Who Has to Follow Them
Apple keeps its marketing rules for developers on one page, the Marketing Resources and Identity Guidelines. It has five parts: App Store badges, Apple product images, custom photography and video, messaging and writing style, and legal requirements. The rules for ratings and reviews sit on a second page, Apple's ratings and reviews guidance.
The rules come with a license. To download the badge artwork you accept the App Store Marketing Artwork License Agreement printed at the bottom of the guidelines page. It lets you use the badge, the App Store icon and Apple's product images only for apps that are available on the App Store, and only while you are a member of the Apple Developer Program. Apple may ask you for samples of how you used the artwork, and the license ends automatically if you break its terms.
Read this page as a summary for people who make posts, ads, emails and landing pages for an app. It is not legal advice, and Apple's own pages are the authority. Apple can amend them at any time, so open the linked page before you send anything to print or put money behind an ad. Every statement below was checked against Apple's pages on October 11, 2026.
App Store Marketing Resources: Which Apple Page Covers What
Apple spreads its marketing material over several pages. This table is the map. Bookmark the pages you use, because they change.

| Badge files, short links, QR codes, social images | App Store Marketing Tools | Search for your app, then copy a link, generate a short link, download a badge, a QR code, your app icon or ready made promotional images. |
| Device frames | Apple Design Resources, product bezels | Official bezels for current iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV models as Photoshop and PNG files. |
| Rating and review rules | Ratings, reviews, and responses | How ratings work per territory, how to ask for them, how to reply, and the one paragraph on using them in marketing. |

App Store Badge Guidelines: Which Badge, Minimum Size and Clear Space
The badge is the black or white button that says Download on the App Store. Apple asks you to include it in all digital and printed marketing as the call to action. These are the numbers from the badge section of Apple's guidelines.
| Rule | What Apple states |
|---|---|
| Preferred badge | Black. Use it in all marketing for your app. The gray border around it is part of the artwork and must stay. |
| Alternative badge | White. Allowed when the black badge looks too heavy, when it is the only badge in the layout, and when it suits the layout colors. |
| Minimum height on screen | 40 px |
| Minimum height in print | 10 mm |
| Minimum clear space | One quarter of the badge height. No photos, type or graphics inside that space. |
| Clear space in very small layouts | One tenth of the badge height, for cases such as banners on mobile devices. |
| How many badges | One App Store badge per layout or per video. |
| Position | Below or beside the main image or message. The badge must not be the dominant artwork. |
| Next to other store badges | Use the black badge, and place the App Store badge first in the row. |
| Before release | Use the preorder badge, then replace it with the download badge everywhere once the app is out. |
| Languages | Apple supplies the badge in 50 localizations. The words App Store stay in English in every one. |
| Print in one color | Allowed when the layout uses no black and white inks. The line art takes the layout's ink color if the contrast stays legible. |
A 40 px badge needs 10 px of clear space around it. On a 1080 px wide social image, a badge 80 to 120 px tall stays readable on a phone. That range is our suggestion and not an Apple number.
App Store Badge Do and Do Not
Each row restates a rule from Apple's badge guidelines.
| Topic | Do | Do not |
|---|---|---|
| Artwork | Use only the badge files Apple provides. | Redraw the badge, or take icons, logos or images from apple.com. |
| Shape | Keep the badge exactly as supplied, gray border included. | Modify it, set it at an angle or animate it. |
| Apple logo | Leave the logo where it is, inside the badge. | Use the Apple logo alone, or use the logo in place of the word Apple. |
| Language | Pick Apple's localized badge for the language of the ad. | Translate App Store yourself or build your own localized badge. |
| Clear space | Keep the area around the badge empty. | Run a photo, a headline or a graphic into the clear space. |
| Trademark symbols | Put the credit line for Apple and the Apple logo where your legal text goes. | Add trademark symbols to the badge artwork or to a headline. |
| Placement | Use the badge on normal ads, pages, posts and print. | Use it on disposable food packaging, or on decals, bumper stickers and magnets for the outside of a vehicle. |
App Store Badge Download: Where to Get the PNG or SVG File
There are two official places to download the badge, and both are free. The fast one is App Store Marketing Tools. Search for your app, choose the storefront, and scroll to Badges and Lockups. You pick black or white, pick one of the listed languages, then either copy an embed snippet that links the badge to your product page or press Download Badges to get a zip file for that language.
On the day we checked, the badge that the tool displays is served from Apple's server as an SVG, so it stays sharp at any size on a website. Apple's footer on the tool says embeds are provided as a convenience and that Apple may deactivate a widget at its own discretion. For anything permanent, such as a printed flyer or a static image, download the file and place it yourself. To put a QR code next to the badge, the App Store QR code generator makes one as a PNG or an SVG for print.
The second place is the Download (All Versions) block on the guidelines page. It holds the full artwork packages for every language, each between 317 and 336 MB when we looked, and you have to tick the license agreement before the download starts.
Searches for "app store badge png" and "app store badge svg" mostly lead to logo collection sites. Skip them. Apple's rule is to use only the artwork it provides, and a file from a third party site gives you no way to know whether it is the current drawing or somebody's trace of it.
How to Add the App Store Badge to a Website With HTML
The quickest route is the embed code from App Store Marketing Tools. Find your app, pick the color and language under Badges and Lockups, and press Copy Embed. When we copied it on October 17, 2026, the snippet was a plain link to your product page on apps.apple.com wrapped around one image: the badge, served as an SVG from Apple's toolbox server, with the alt text Download on the App Store and a display size of 246 by 82 pixels. Paste it where the button belongs, in the HTML block of a page builder or in your own template.
Keep three parts of the snippet as they are. The link ends with two short parameters that Apple adds to the address, so leave them in. The alt text is what a screen reader announces, so if you swap in a downloaded file, give it the same words. And the size can shrink, as long as the badge stays at least 40 px tall with clear space of a quarter of its height, the minimums in the table above.
If you would rather host the file, press Download Badges in the same tool and link the image to your product page yourself. Searches for an "app store badge generator" also lead to third party sites that draw a badge for you. Apple's rule to use only the artwork it provides covers those too, so skip them.
For visitors on an iPhone, Apple offers a second, native option. A Smart App Banner is one meta tag in the head of the page that carries your app ID. Safari then shows a slim banner at the top of the page that leads to your App Store listing, or opens the app if it is already installed, and Apple's documentation says the banner does not appear on devices that cannot run your app. The same page says the app ID is listed as Apple ID under App Information in App Store Connect. Use both: the banner serves iPhone visitors in Safari, and the badge serves everyone else and every printed page.
Apple Product Images and Device Frames: What Is Allowed
Showing your screenshot inside an iPhone is fine when you use the frames Apple supplies. Download them from Apple Design Resources under product bezels, and follow the product images section of the guidelines.
| Topic | Do | Do not |
|---|---|---|
| Which frame | Use the Apple provided bezel for the latest generation device your app supports. | Use a render from a mockup site, a 3D model, or any simulation of an Apple product. |
| Editing the device | Use the image as it is. | Add reflections, shadows or highlights, crop, tilt, flip, spin or animate it, or let graphics appear to come out of the screen. |
| Text and stickers | Place promotional copy and callout stickers beside the device. | Place them on top of the device. |
| Size | Keep the device at least 200 px tall on screen and 25 mm tall in print. | Shrink it until the screen cannot be read. |
| Several devices | Show them at correct relative scale. | Show an Apple device next to a competing product. Other platforms may be named in copy or shown as badges only. |
| Illustrations | Draw a generic device if you need an illustration. | Give it details unique to Apple products, such as the sensor housing, Ring/Silent switch or volume controls. |
| Screen | Show your app as it looks when running, on the latest operating system version. | Show a blank screen or, unless you are showing your own widget, the Home Screen. |
| Your own photos and video | Shoot real people using the device in a believable way. Straight on shots are preferred. | Add a case or cover, use extreme angles, or frame the shot to feature the Apple logo. |
Checked against Apple's guidelines on October 11, 2026. The bezel list on that date included iPhone 16, 17 and 18, current iPad and Mac models, Apple Watch and Apple TV. For a generic phone with no Apple details, use Plain Phone in our free iPhone mockup generator.
How to Write App Store and Apple Product Names in Your Copy
Apple also sets rules for wording. These come from the messaging and legal sections of the guidelines, and spellings are confirmed on the Apple Trademark List.
| Write this | Not this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Available on the App Store | Available at the App Store, downloadable | Apple accepts on the App Store and from the App Store, and asks you not to use at or the word downloadable. |
| The App Store | Apple App Store, iTunes App Store, iPhone App Store, the best App Store | Only the article the may come before App Store. No other descriptors, no superlatives. |
| Notely for iPhone | iPhone Notely | Apple product names go in a phrase such as for, works with or compatible with, after your app name. |
| iPhone and iPad | Smartphones and tablets, IPHONE, iPhones | Use the product names, never all capitals, always singular. |
| Notely for iPhone, iPad and Android | Android and iPhone | Other platforms may appear in copy. Apple products are listed first. |
| A headline about your app | A headline about an Apple feature | Copy should focus on your app. Apple also asks you to avoid naming iOS, macOS, tvOS or watchOS. |
| yourapp.com/iphone | iphoneyourapp.com | An Apple trademark may appear in a URL only after your company or product name. |
| App Store in English, in every language | A translated App Store | Apple trademarks are never translated or transliterated. |
"Notely" is a made up app name. In ads that run only in the United States, Apple asks for the right symbol after each Apple trademark the first time it appears in body copy. Outside the United States, no symbols. Everywhere, add a credit line where your legal text goes. When the badge appears, Apple asks you to credit both Apple and the Apple logo.
Can I Use the Apple Logo on My Website or in My App?
Not on its own. Apple's trademark guidelines say only Apple and its authorized resellers and licensees may use the Apple logo in advertising, promotional and sales materials, and that nobody may use it on websites, products, packaging or ads without an express written trademark license from Apple. The marketing guidelines say the same to developers in two lines: never use the Apple logo in place of the word Apple, and do not use the standalone logo.
The logo can appear on your page only inside artwork that Apple supplies. The App Store badge carries it, which is why placing the badge is allowed. The marketing guidelines also offer artwork for Apple In App Purchase, in several languages and in black and white, to be used as supplied and never localized by you. For sign in screens, Apple's Human Interface Guidelines for Sign in with Apple provide logo files in PNG, SVG and PDF for building a custom button, with a firm rule attached: use the file to position the Apple logo inside a button, and never use the Apple logo as a button.
Words are treated differently. The trademark page lets a developer use an Apple word mark in a referential phrase that shows compatibility, such as for iPhone or compatible with Apple Watch, when the Apple name is less prominent than your product name, the product really works with it, and nothing suggests Apple endorses or sponsors you. The same page rules out imitating Apple's packaging, website design or typefaces, borrowing an Apple slogan, and registering a domain built on an Apple trademark.
People who search for Apple trademark guidelines are usually after one of those three answers. Cases outside them, such as merchandise, books or a conference name, have their own sections on the trademark page, and Apple asks that other questions go to its Trademark Department.
Using Your App Store Rating and Reviews in Marketing
The whole rule is two sentences on Apple's ratings and reviews page. Your rating may appear in marketing as long as it accurately reflects your app's current rating. Customer reviews may be used in marketing materials "only if permission from the reviewer is granted."
Current is the word that catches people. The same Apple page explains that the summary rating is specific to each territory, and that you can reset it when you release a new version. So a 4.8 in the United States can be a 4.5 in Germany on the same day, and a rating image made in March can be wrong by June. State the storefront and the date next to the number ("4.8 on the App Store, United States, October 2026"), and remake the image when the number moves.
Apple does not hand you a reviewer's contact details, so getting permission takes some work. One route is to reply to the review in App Store Connect, which notifies the reviewer, and invite the person to write to your support address. The other is to ask for quotes from users you can already reach by email. Keep the written yes. Our guide on how to get App Store reviews covers asking for reviews inside the app, which Apple limits to three prompts in a 365 day period.
In the United States a quoted review is also an advertising claim. FTC staff guidance on the consumer reviews rule, in effect since October 21, 2024, says a consumer review featured in advertising becomes a testimonial, and the business that publishes it can be liable if it is fake or false. Quote reviews word for word and never write one yourself.
We found no official App Store rating badge on any of the Apple pages above. Apple's marketing tool offers image types for a new launch, an update, a subscription offer and a new offer, and a rating is not one of the options. A rating graphic is something you design yourself with a testimonial graphic generator or a design tool. Build it from your own brand pieces, and do not rework the App Store badge into a rating plaque.
Awards, Editors' Choice and Featured by Apple Claims
Apple gives you official material when it features you. According to Apple's page on getting featured, if your app lands in select Today tab placements such as App of the Day, the App Store Connect app sends a notification and lets you pick visual assets to share on social media. Use those assets. They are the one way to say it with Apple's own design.
Apple's pages do not publish a wording rule for claims like "Featured by Apple", so two general rules apply. The first is accuracy: Apple says featured selections are curated by region, and Editors' Choice is curated per storefront, so name where and when ("App of the Day in Canada, June 2026"). The second is Apple's trademark guidance, which bars using Apple's names, logos or product images in a way that implies Apple endorses or sponsors your product.
In practice: say what happened, where and when. Do not write "Apple recommends" or "Apple's favorite", do not draw your own laurel with the Apple logo, and take the claim down from evergreen pages when it gets old.
Screenshots in Ads and Social Posts: What Apple Asks For
These rules apply when your screenshot sits inside an Apple device image. They come from the screen content part of the guidelines. For pixel dimensions, see our table of App Store screenshot sizes.
Show the Real App
Display your app on the screen as it appears when it is running, built on the latest operating system version. The focus is the experience of your app, not a feature of the Apple device.
Use Fictional Account Data
Apple asks for fictional account information instead of data from a real person. You are also responsible for the rights to everything visible on the screen, including third party content such as store names.
Keep the Status Bar Full
On iPhone and iPad the status bar should show a full network icon, a full wireless icon and a full battery icon. If your app runs full screen, your screenshot may extend over the status bar.
One Push Notification
To show a push notification from your app, show a single one on the lock screen. No stack of several, and none from other apps.
No Home Screen
Do not show the Home Screen of an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Apple TV. The exception is an app with a widget, which may show its own widget there as long as no third party content appears.
Label Shortened Video
In video, start the app sequence with your app already open. If you cut steps to save time, Apple asks for a disclaimer that says sequences were shortened. Use simple fades and dissolves between scenes.
Custom Product Pages and Campaign Links
A social post about one feature can link to a page that shows that feature first. Apple's tool for this is the custom product page. Per Apple's custom product pages overview, you can publish up to 70 additional versions of your product page for iPhone and iPad, each with its own screenshots, promotional text and app previews, and each with its own URL to share in posts, emails and ads. Apple's help page on configuring custom product pages adds that you can assign keywords from your latest approved version to a page, so people who search those words land on it in place of your default page once it is approved and visible.
To learn which post or channel brought the downloads, add a campaign link. Apple's campaign links help page puts the generator in App Store Connect under Analytics, Acquisition, Campaigns. You type a campaign name of up to 30 characters, and Apple returns a link carrying a campaign token and a provider token. The provider token identifies your developer account and stays the same across campaigns.
Two limits to plan around. The Campaigns option appears only after your app has analytics data, so a brand new app cannot generate links before it has downloads. And a metric shows up in the dashboard only once it reaches a minimum of 5 in the date range, with campaigns appearing no sooner than 24 hours after they start. A link in one small post may never show a number. Group posts under one campaign per channel or per launch, a habit worth adding to your app launch checklist.
App Store Marketing Tools That Apple Gives You for Free
All of these are listed on Apple's promote page or inside App Store Marketing Tools. None needs a paid service.
Short Links and Content Links
Search for your app in App Store Marketing Tools and copy the content link, or press Generate Short Link for a compact one that fits a bio or a printed card.
QR Codes
The same tool builds a QR code that opens your product page. You can set it in white, black or blue and put your app icon in the middle, then download it.
App Store Marketing Images
The asset generator makes promotional images for a new launch, an update, a subscription offer or a new offer. Sizes on offer when we checked: 1080 by 1080 square post, 1080 by 1920 story, 1200 by 720 and 720 by 1280 banners, and a 1200 by 628 link card.
App Store Connect Marketing Tools
The App Store Connect app generates marketing assets for a launch, a new version or a feature on the App Store, and shares them to your social channels from your phone.
Promo Codes
For press and creators, Apple lets you give away up to 100 promo codes per version of your app, per platform. You set them up in App Store Connect.
Preorders and Smart App Banners
A preorder puts your product page live before release, with a release date 2 to 180 days ahead. A Smart App Banner in Safari sends visitors of your website to the app on the App Store, or opens it if it is installed.
Video: How People Find Apps and the Marketing Tools Apple Offers
Apple's own talk on app discovery covers the product page, search, referral traffic and the promotional features listed on Apple's promote page. It was recorded as a 2023 session, so a few product names and screens have changed since.
Apple Brand Guidelines PDF: What Apple Publishes for Developers
People search for an Apple brand guidelines PDF in many forms. For app developers there is no single brand book to download. What Apple publishes is a set of web pages and artwork packages: the Marketing Resources and Identity Guidelines as a web page, badge artwork as zip packages for every language (each between 317 and 336 MB when we checked on October 17, 2026), device bezels on Apple Design Resources, and the trademark rules on Apple's legal site. We found no public PDF of Apple's own corporate brand standards on any of those pages, and the trademark page forbids imitating Apple's typefaces and design in any case.
If a designer or agency needs a document, save Apple's guidelines page as a PDF from your browser on the day the work starts and write the date on it. The license at the bottom of that page says the guidelines may be amended from time to time, so open the live page again before anything goes to print or into a paid campaign.
Two narrower sets of rules behave like brand guides of their own. The marketing guidelines link to Apple's Apple Pay and Apple Wallet guidelines for apps that take payments with Apple Pay, and to the brand assets for Apple In App Purchase. For your own colors, type and logo, keep a one page brand style guide next to Apple's rules.
Google Play Badge Guidelines Compared With Apple's
If your app is also on Android, the second badge has its own rules. Google's live on the Google Play lockups, icons and badges page in its Partner Marketing Hub, which also lists the badge files. Google's older badge address on play.google.com now redirects there.
| Rule | App Store badge | Google Play badge |
|---|---|---|
| Badge wording | Download on the App Store, or the preorder version | Get it on Google Play, or the version for registering before launch |
| Minimum height on screen | 40 px | 28 px |
| Minimum height in print | 10 mm | 0.3 inches, or 7.6 mm |
| Clear space | One quarter of the badge height | One quarter of the badge height |
| Next to another store's badge | App Store badge goes first, in black | Google Play badge must be the same size as the others or larger |
| Color | Black preferred, white as the alternative | Do not change the badge color |
| Background | No separate background rule. Keep the clear space empty and the badge legible | Solid backgrounds or simple images with enough contrast |
| Languages | Use Apple's localized badge | Use the localized badge that matches the language of the campaign |
| Named as not allowed | Angling, animating or editing the badge | Using old artwork, low resolution files, or the Google Play logo lockup where the badge belongs |
Both companies ask for first place or equal size, and both can be satisfied at once: put the App Store badge on the left and make the two badges the same height. Checked October 11, 2026.
How to Place the App Store and Google Play Badges Side by Side
A row with both store badges is the most common layout on an app website, and it is where the two rule sets meet. These steps satisfy Apple's badge guidelines and Google's badge page at the same time, as both read on October 17, 2026.
- Step 1
Download Both Badges From Their Owners
Take the App Store badge from Apple's marketing tools and the Google Play badge from Google's Partner Marketing Hub. Google's page listed its Get it on Google Play badge files as last updated on February 15, 2024, and it asks you never to use outdated badge artwork.
- Step 2
Use the Black App Store Badge
Apple asks for the black badge whenever it appears next to badges from other stores. Google asks you not to change the color of its badge at all, so use each file exactly as downloaded.
- Step 3
Put the App Store Badge First
Apple asks that the App Store badge come first in a row of store badges. Google's page sets no order, so the App Store badge on the left, or on top in a stacked layout, meets both rules.
- Step 4
Make the Two Badges the Same Height
Google requires its badge to be the same size as the other store badges or larger. Equal heights meet that rule and keep the App Store badge from being smaller. Use at least 40 px on screen and 10 mm in print, the higher of the two companies' minimums.
- Step 5
Leave a Quarter of the Badge Height Around Each One
Both companies set the clear space at one quarter of the badge height. Keep at least that gap between the two badges and around the pair, and keep photos and text out of it.
- Step 6
Link Each Badge to Its Own Store
Each badge should open its own listing. Apple allows one App Store badge per layout, so one row with one badge from each store is the cleanest version.
- Step 7
Keep Apple Devices Away From Android Devices
Apple's other platforms rule lets you name other platforms in copy, with Apple products listed first, but it never allows Apple product images next to images of other products. If the layout shows an iPhone, do not put an Android phone beside it.
How Spreadcast Applies These Rules to Its Posts
Spreadcast is app marketing automation for social media. You paste your App Store link once, it checks the public listing every day, and it turns each update, new 5 star review and rating milestone into a designed post for your networks.
Two of Apple's rules are built into how it works. A post that shows your rating uses the rating on the listing that day, so the number is the current one. A post that quotes a reviewer's words never publishes by itself: it waits for your approval, because the permission Apple requires is yours to get.
The rest of this page still applies to anything you make by hand. For wording ideas that stay inside the rules, see our app update announcement examples and app launch announcement examples, and keep your own colors and type in a one page brand style guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I download the App Store badge?
From Apple, in one of two places. App Store Marketing Tools gives you a badge for one app in the color and language you pick, as an embed snippet or a zip download. The Download (All Versions) block on the marketing guidelines page has the full artwork for every language after you accept the license agreement.
What is the minimum size of the Download on the App Store badge?
40 px tall on screen and 10 mm tall in print, according to Apple's graphic standards for the badge. Leave clear space of one quarter of the badge height around it, or one tenth where layout space is very limited, such as a mobile banner.
Is there an App Store badge PNG or SVG I can use on my website?
Yes. The badge shown in App Store Marketing Tools was served as an SVG when we checked on October 11, 2026, and the tool's Download Badges button gives you a zip of the artwork. Use those files and do not take a PNG from a logo site, since Apple allows only the artwork it provides.
Can I use App Store reviews in my ads or social posts?
Only with the reviewer's permission. Apple's ratings and reviews page allows customer reviews in marketing materials on that condition, with no exception for 5 star reviews or short quotes. Get the yes in writing, quote the words exactly, and keep the record.
Can I show my App Store rating in marketing?
Yes, if it is accurate and current. Apple's rule is that the rating in your marketing must reflect your app's current rating, and the rating is specific to each territory. Name the storefront and the date, and update the image when the rating changes.
Is it wrong to write Apple App Store?
In your own marketing, yes. People search for "apple app store marketing guidelines", but Apple's writing rules list Apple App Store, iTunes App Store and iPhone App Store as wording to avoid. Write the App Store, with a capital A and a capital S.
Can I put my screenshot in an iPhone frame from a mockup site?
Apple's guidelines say to use the bezels it provides and do not permit 3D renders or simulations of its products. The official frames are free on Apple Design Resources as Photoshop and PNG files. Use the device image unedited: no added shadows, no tilt, no cropping.
Do I need Apple's approval before I publish an ad for my app?
The guidelines describe no approval step for ordinary marketing. They are a license you agree to follow. Under the artwork license on the guidelines page, Apple can ask for samples of your use of the artwork, and the license ends automatically if you break it. Google's Partner Marketing Hub, by contrast, has an asset approval section for partners.
Can I use the Apple logo as a button in my app or on my website?
No. Apple's Sign in with Apple guidelines provide logo files for placing the logo inside a sign in button and say never to use the Apple logo as a button. Outside Apple's own artwork, such as the App Store badge, the trademark guidelines require a written license to use the logo at all.
How do I put the App Store badge on my website?
Copy the embed code from App Store Marketing Tools: it links the official badge image to your product page. Or download the badge there and link it yourself, keeping at least 40 px of height. For iPhone visitors you can also add a Smart App Banner with one meta tag.
