ChatGPT Prompts for Instagram Carousel Posts That Return Slides, Not Essays
Ask ChatGPT for "an Instagram carousel about habit tracking" and you usually get a blog post cut into numbered paragraphs, each too long to read on a phone. The prompts on this page fix that by telling the model what a carousel is: a fixed number of slides, a word limit per slide, one idea per slide, a cover that makes a promise and a last slide that asks for one thing.
There are 25 prompts, grouped by job: hooks for the first slide, outlines from notes or a blog post, structures for how to, listicle, before and after and myth carousels, five prompts for app makers, captions and alt text, and repair prompts for a draft that is close but not right. Words in square brackets are what you replace. Each card says what the prompt produces. The examples use Streakly, an invented habit tracking app; none of them are real posts.
Before the prompts come the rules a carousel has to follow on Instagram today, because a well written carousel at the wrong size gets cropped. After them comes the step most guides skip: turning ChatGPT's text into designed slides. The same prompts work in Claude, Gemini or any other assistant.
Instagram Carousel Guidelines in October 2026
The numbers that decide how your slides look in the feed and on your profile, each linked to the page it came from, checked on 16 October 2026.
| Rule | What it is today |
|---|---|
| Slides per carousel in the app | Up to 20 photos and videos in one post, per Instagram's carousel help page |
| Slides through a publishing tool | Up to 10 images, videos or a mix, per Meta's content publishing docs |
| Orientation | One orientation (square, portrait or landscape) applies to every slide in the post |
| Width | Kept as is between 320 and 1080 pixels wide; wider files are sized down to 1080, per Instagram's image resolution page |
| Tallest shape in the app | 3:4, which is 1080 x 1440 pixels |
| Tallest shape through a publishing tool | 4:5, which is 1080 x 1350 pixels, JPEG only, up to 8 MB, per Meta's media reference for developers |
| Profile grid thumbnail | Shown at 3:4, so a 4:5 slide is cropped to about 1013 x 1350, per Planoly's guide to the vertical grid |
| Caption length | Up to 2,200 characters, per the same developer reference |
| Hashtags | Up to 5 per post, per Instagram's hashtag help page |
| Alt text | Written per photo, before or after you share, per Instagram's alt text page |
| After posting | You can reorder or remove slides, but you cannot add new ones |
The Help Center and the developer reference disagree on the tallest shape: the app keeps 3:4, publishing tools stop at 4:5.
1080 x 1350 or 1080 x 1440: Which Instagram Carousel Size to Use
Design at 1080 x 1350 pixels (4:5), the tallest shape both routes accept. The Instagram Help Center says the app keeps photos between 1.91:1 and 3:4, so 1080 x 1440 posts fine by hand. But Meta's media reference, which every scheduling tool depends on, requires images between 4:5 and 1.91:1, so a 3:4 slide can be refused the moment you schedule it.
Then plan for the grid, which now shows tall rectangles instead of squares. Planoly's guide, updated in October 2025, says the grid displays posts at 3:4 and that even a 4:5 upload is cropped to 3:4 for the thumbnail. On a 1080 x 1350 cover that removes about 34 pixels from each side, so keep text and faces at least 60 pixels in from the left and right edges. A square 1080 x 1080 cover keeps only its middle 810 pixels of width, so center the headline and keep it narrow.
Only the first slide shows on your profile and as the first frame in the feed, where Instagram's carousel page says it appears with a row of dots below it. Everything a person needs to decide to swipe has to be on slide one, which is why hooks get their own section below. Sizes for other networks are in the social media image sizes guide, and if the same slides go to LinkedIn as a PDF, read the LinkedIn carousel size guide.
How Does an Instagram Carousel Work?
An Instagram carousel is one post that holds several photos or videos. Instagram's carousel page describes what people see: the first slide in the feed with a row of dots under it, and an icon on your profile that marks the post as a carousel. Readers swipe sideways for the rest. Likes and comments belong to the whole post, not to single slides, so the carousel is judged as one piece.
A few rules follow from that, and they change how you prompt. There is one caption and one location for the whole post, so the caption cannot explain each slide; the slide text has to. One orientation covers every slide. A filter can go on all slides or on each one. Videos inside a carousel are not treated as Reels, so they do not show in the Reels tab. And because you can reorder or remove slides after posting but never add one, a missing slide means deleting the post and sharing it again.
That is why every prompt below fixes the slide count and the job of each slide before ChatGPT writes a word.
The Context Prompt to Paste Before Any Carousel Prompt
ChatGPT writes better slides when it knows the rules up front. Paste this once at the start of a chat, fill in the brackets, then use any prompt below in the same chat.
0. Carousel Rules for the Whole Chat
Prompt: "You are helping me write Instagram carousels for [account name], which posts about [subject] for [audience]. Follow these rules in every carousel in this chat. A carousel has [7] slides unless I say otherwise. Slide 1 is the cover: a headline of 10 words or fewer that makes one specific promise. Middle slides carry one idea each: a headline of 8 words or fewer and at most 25 words of body text. The last slide asks the reader to do one thing. Plain words, second person, no emojis, no hashtags on slides, no dashes. Never invent numbers, quotes, studies or customers; write [number] where a figure is needed. Return every carousel as a table with columns Slide, Headline, Body, Visual." What it produces: a confirmation, then every later answer as a table you can paste into a design tool, at a length that fits a phone screen.
Carousel Hook Prompts for the First Slide
The cover is the only slide most people see. These prompts give you options to choose from instead of one guess.
1. Ten Cover Headlines From One Topic
Prompt: "Write 10 cover headlines for an Instagram carousel about [topic] for [audience]. Use five patterns, two of each: a number and a result, a mistake to avoid, a question the reader already asks, a before and after, and a bold but true statement. Each 10 words or fewer. Then tell me which two you would pick and why, in one sentence each." What it produces: ten headlines in pairs by pattern and a short recommendation. Pick the one that names a result your reader can picture.
2. Cover Headline Plus Subline
Prompt: "For a carousel titled [working title], write 5 versions of the cover. Each has a headline of up to 8 words and a subline of up to 12 words that says who it is for or what they get. The subline must add information, not repeat the headline." What it produces: five pairs. The subline carries "for busy parents" or "in 5 minutes a day", which keeps the headline short enough to read at a glance.
3. Hooks Written From a Comment or Question
Prompt: "Here are real questions my followers asked: [paste 3 to 10 comments or DMs]. Turn each into a carousel cover headline that answers the question in the reader's own words, under 10 words. Do not add facts that are not in the questions." What it produces: one cover per question, in your audience's vocabulary. The demand is proven before you design anything.
4. Stop Scrolling Test for a Cover
Prompt: "Here is my carousel cover: [headline and subline]. Pretend you are [audience] scrolling fast. In three short lines tell me what you think the carousel will teach you, whether you would swipe, and what one change would make you more likely to. Then rewrite the cover with that change." What it produces: a reader's view and one improved version. If the model's guess about what the carousel teaches is wrong, the cover is unclear.
Slide by Slide Outline Prompts
Use these when you already have the material in notes, a blog post, a video or a long caption, and need it cut into slides.
5. Rough Notes to a Seven Slide Outline
Prompt: "Turn these notes into a 7 slide Instagram carousel for [audience]: [paste notes]. Slide 1 is the cover, slides 2 to 6 carry one point each in the order a beginner needs them, slide 7 asks the reader to [save the post or follow or try the app]. Use only what is in my notes. If something important is missing, list it under the table as a question for me instead of filling it in." What it produces: a slide table built only from your material, plus a list of gaps, which stops ChatGPT padding with advice you never gave.
6. Blog Post to Carousel
Prompt: "Here is a blog post: [paste text]. Make an 8 slide Instagram carousel from it. Put the post's most useful point on slide 2, not slide 7. Cut every example except the best one. Each middle slide gets a headline of 8 words or fewer and at most 20 words of body text. Add a Visual column saying what image or screenshot each slide needs." What it produces: the post compressed to eight slides with a shot list. Long articles often hold two carousels; ask what the second one would be.
7. Video or Podcast Transcript to Carousel
Prompt: "This is a transcript of my [video or podcast]: [paste transcript]. Find the three moments a viewer would most want to save. Make a 6 slide carousel around them, quoting my own words where they are short and clear. Mark each quote with its timestamp." What it produces: a carousel built from your best moments, with timestamps so you can check every quote against the recording.
8. Change the Slide Count Without Losing the Point
Prompt: "Here is my carousel: [paste table]. Rewrite it as [5] slides. Merge points that overlap, drop the weakest one, and keep the cover and the last slide's request. Show which slides were merged or dropped." What it produces: a shorter version and a change list. A model asked for 12 slides will usually stretch five ideas to fill them, so cut rather than pad.
Prompts for How To, Listicle, Before and After and Myth Carousels
Five structures that work for almost any account. Each prompt fixes the structure so ChatGPT only has to fill it.
9. How To Carousel in Numbered Steps
Prompt: "Write a how to carousel: how to [task] in [number] steps, for someone who has never done it. Slide 1: the cover with the number of steps and the result. One step per slide, each starting with a verb, with one line on what success looks like. Last slide: a recap of all steps in one line each, so the reader can save it." What it produces: a numbered tutorial with a recap slide, which is the slide people return to after saving.
10. Listicle of Tools, Tips or Ideas
Prompt: "Write a listicle carousel: [number] [tips or tools or ideas] for [audience] who want [result]. One item per slide with a short name and one sentence on when to use it, ordered from easiest to most effort. No general truisms such as be consistent. If you cannot reach [number] specific items, give fewer." What it produces: a ranked list of specific items. Allowing fewer items is what stops the list padding itself to your number.
11. Before and After Carousel
Prompt: "Write a before and after carousel about [what changed, such as my morning routine or our onboarding screen]. Slide 1: the cover naming the change. Slides 2 and 3: the before and what was wrong with it. Slides 4 and 5: the after and what is different. Slide 6: what caused the change. Slide 7: a question about the reader's own before. Use [number] where a result needs a real figure." What it produces: paired before and after slides. Design each pair with the same layout and crop so readers compare the content only.
12. Mistakes and Fixes
Prompt: "Write a carousel of [6] mistakes [audience] make with [topic]. Each middle slide has the mistake as the headline, in the words the reader would use for their own habit, and the fix as one action they can take today. Last slide: ask which mistake they are fixing first." What it produces: mistake and fix pairs. A mistake with no fix reads as a complaint, so the prompt forces both.
13. Myth Versus Fact
Prompt: "Write a myth versus fact carousel on [topic]. For each of [4] myths, one slide states the myth and the fact in one sentence each. Under the table, list for each fact the kind of source I should check it against, such as an official help page or a published study. Do not state any statistic." What it produces: myth and fact slides plus a list of where to verify each fact. Check every one before you design.
Instagram Carousel Prompts for an App: Updates, Features and Reviews
Five prompts for people who make an app. Paste your own release notes, screens and reviews in place of the brackets.
14. App Update Carousel From Release Notes
Prompt: "Here are the release notes for [app name] version [number]: [paste notes]. Write a 6 slide Instagram carousel for people who already use the app. Slide 1: the version and the change they will notice first. Slides 2 to 5: one change each, benefit first, then where to find it. Slide 6: update from the App Store, and which change did they want most. Add a Visual column naming the screen each slide shows." What it produces: an update announcement with a shot list; for Streakly 2.4 the cover might read "Your Streak Now Survives a Sick Day". More wording is in the app update announcement examples.
15. One Feature Explained in Five Slides
Prompt: "Explain one feature of [app name], [feature], as a 5 slide carousel. Slide 1: the problem it solves, as the question a user would ask. Slides 2 to 4: the three taps to use it, one per slide, naming the exact button. Slide 5: the result and where to get the app. Nothing about other features." What it produces: a short tutorial with button names spelled out, ready for one screenshot per step. A second feature is a second carousel.
16. Review Carousel From App Store Reviews
Prompt: "Here are App Store reviews of [app name] that the reviewers agreed I can share: [paste reviews with each reviewer's chosen name]. Pick the [4] that each give a different reason people use the app. One review per slide, shortened only by cutting words, never by changing them. Add a cover saying what the reviews have in common and a last slide asking readers to try the app." What it produces: a review carousel that quotes people accurately. Ask permission before quoting, and never let the model rewrite a quote.
17. What We Learned From Our Ratings
Prompt: "[App name] just reached [number] ratings with an average of [rating]. Here are the themes in our reviews: [paste themes]. Write a 7 slide carousel: the milestone, what users praise most, where they got stuck and what we changed, the most requested feature and its status, one thing we decided not to build and why, and a thank you. Use only the numbers I gave you." What it produces: a milestone post that reads as honest because it includes what went wrong.
18. Screenshot Walkthrough for a New User
Prompt: "I will describe [number] screens of [app name] in the order a new user sees them: [describe each screen]. Write one slide per screen with a headline saying what the user can do there and a body line under 15 words. Add a cover for people who have not downloaded the app and a last slide with the name to search for on the App Store." What it produces: a first run tour to lay over real screenshots. The App Store screenshot sizes guide has the export sizes that stay sharp in a frame.
ChatGPT Instagram Post Prompts for Captions, Hashtags and Alt Text
The slides are half the post. These prompts write the parts Instagram shows around them.
19. Caption That Adds to the Slides
Prompt: "Here is my carousel: [paste table]. Write the Instagram caption. First line: a sentence under 125 characters that makes someone tap more, not a repeat of the cover. Then 2 to 4 short lines of context the slides do not have, such as why I made it. End with one question that is easy to answer in a comment. No emojis, under 600 characters." What it produces: a caption that adds to the slides instead of summarizing them, well inside the 2,200 character limit.
20. Five Hashtags, Chosen Not Stuffed
Prompt: "Suggest hashtags for this carousel: [topic and audience]. Give me 5 in total: 2 broad tags for the subject, 2 specific tags a person interested in exactly this would follow, and 1 for my own account or series. Explain each in a few words." What it produces: five hashtags with reasons. The Instagram Help Center says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, so prompt lists that still ask for 30 are out of date.
21. Alt Text for Every Slide
Prompt: "Write alt text for each slide of this carousel: [paste table with the Visual column]. For each slide, one or two sentences that include the slide's words and describe the image for someone using a screen reader. Do not start with image of." What it produces: alt text per slide. Instagram's alt text page says automatic alt text uses object recognition and that you can replace it under Accessibility, which matters most on slides that are mostly words.
22. Caption Variants for Testing
Prompt: "Write 3 different first lines for this caption: [paste caption]. One opens with a question, one with a specific detail from slide [number], one with the result the reader gets. Keep the rest the same." What it produces: three openings to rotate when you repost the carousel or reuse it on Facebook. Change one thing at a time so you know what made the difference.
Prompts That Fix a Carousel Draft
The first draft is rarely the one you post. These three prompts do the editing pass.
23. Cut Every Slide to Fit a Phone
Prompt: "Here is my carousel: [paste table]. Cut every body line to 20 words or fewer without losing its point. Replace any word a 12 year old would not know. Show the word count for each slide after your edit." What it produces: tighter slides with word counts, so you see which one still runs long. As a rule of thumb, text large enough to read on a phone leaves room for 20 to 30 words on a 1080 x 1350 slide.
24. Consistency and Fact Check
Prompt: "Check this carousel: [paste table]. List every number, name, quote and claim, and mark each as from my notes, general knowledge or invented by you. Then check that the slides deliver the cover's promise, that the count on the cover matches the real count, and that the last slide asks for exactly one thing." What it produces: an audit of every claim. Delete anything marked invented and look up anything marked general knowledge.
25. Write the Last Slide Three Ways
Prompt: "Write 3 versions of the last slide for this carousel: [paste table]. One asks people to save it, one asks for a comment answering a specific question, one sends them to [link in bio or the app]. Each under 15 words. Tell me which fits the goal of [goal]." What it produces: three closing slides tied to one goal. A last slide that asks for a save, a follow and a click at once gets none of them.
Example Output: A Seven Slide Carousel for Streakly
What prompt 0 plus prompt 9 returned for an invented app, lightly edited. Streakly is not a real product.
| Slide | Headline | Body | Visual |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Build a Habit That Lasts Past Week Two | Five steps, one minute a day, for people who have quit before. | Cover: headline on brand color, small app icon |
| 2 | Step 1. Pick One Habit | Choose the smallest version you would still do on your worst day. | Streakly screen: new habit form |
| 3 | Step 2. Tie It to Something You Already Do | After coffee, before brushing teeth. The old habit becomes the reminder. | Streakly screen: trigger picker |
| 4 | Step 3. Track It Where You Will See It | Put the tracker on your home screen, not in a folder. | iPhone home screen with the widget |
| 5 | Step 4. Plan for the Missed Day | Decide now what counts as keeping the streak when you are sick. | Streakly screen: rest day setting |
| 6 | Step 5. Look Back Every Sunday | Two minutes: what worked, what to make smaller next week. | Streakly screen: weekly summary |
| 7 | Save This for Day One | Pick, tie, track, plan, look back. Which step do you skip most? | Recap list in the cover's layout |
Prompt 21 then wrote the alt text and prompt 19 the caption, in the same chat.
Instagram Carousel Ideas and the Prompt to Start From
Short of a topic? Each idea below suits most accounts, and the number points to the prompt on this page that writes it.
| Carousel idea | Who it suits | Start with prompt |
|---|---|---|
| A tutorial in five steps with a recap slide | Anyone who teaches a skill | 9 |
| The tools or apps you use every day | Creators, coaches and app makers | 10 |
| Common mistakes and the fix for each | Experts in a narrow field | 12 |
| Myths people in your field still believe | Health, money, fitness, study | 13 |
| Before and after of a redesign or routine | Designers, app makers, coaches | 11 |
| Answers to questions your followers asked | Any account with comments to read | 3, then 5 |
| A blog post or video in eight slides | Writers, podcasters, YouTubers | 6 or 7 |
| What changed in the latest app version | App makers | 14 |
| One feature explained in three taps | App makers | 15 |
| What reviewers say about you | Apps, shops, services | 16 |
| A ratings milestone and what you learned | App makers | 17 |
| A first run tour of an app | App makers before a launch | 18 |
Run prompt 0 first in the same chat so every idea comes back as a slide table.
How to Make an Instagram Carousel With ChatGPT: From Text to Designed Slides
ChatGPT's table is a script, not a post. Instagram needs one image file per slide, all the same size, in order. There are three practical ways to get there, and they differ mainly in how much control you keep over text and layout.
The first is ChatGPT's own image generation: paste a slide's text and ask for a 4:5 slide. It is quick for a cover or a slide that is mostly picture and weak for text heavy slides. OpenAI's image generation guide says the model can still struggle with precise text placement and clarity, and with visual consistency across recurring images. It lists 1024 x 1536 as the standard portrait size, which is 2:3, not 4:5, so expect to crop, and check every letter of every slide. Repeat the same style description for each slide or the fonts and colors drift.
The second is your own template. Build one cover and one content slide at 1080 x 1350 in Canva, Figma or Keynote, then paste each row of the table into a copy of the content slide. In Canva you can skip the pasting: Bulk Create links spreadsheet columns to text boxes, and each row creates one version of the design. Ask ChatGPT for the carousel as a CSV with headline and body columns, upload it, and Canva fills one slide per row. Bulk Create is on Canva's paid plans, on desktop. This route is slow the first time and fastest from the second carousel on.
The third is a design tool connected to the assistant through MCP, the Model Context Protocol, so ChatGPT or Claude makes the design itself. Canva's AI Connector page says it works with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, is available on every Canva account including Free, and lets a connected assistant create and edit designs and export files. Brand Templates and autofill need a paid plan, and AI actions may use your monthly Canva AI credits. You get editable slides instead of a flat image, so one typo does not mean regenerating the carousel.
Whichever route you choose, export JPEG or PNG at 1080 pixels wide, name the files 01, 02, 03 so they upload in order, and look at every slide on a phone before posting.
ChatGPT Image Generation vs Canva vs a Connected Design Tool
The same seven slide table, turned into images three ways.
| Route | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT image generation | Covers and picture led slides, quick drafts | Misspelled or misplaced text, a look that changes between slides, 2:3 portrait output |
| Your template in Canva or Figma | Full control of fonts, spacing and brand colors | Slow the first time; Bulk Create needs a paid Canva plan and desktop |
| Design tool connected through MCP | Editable slides without leaving the chat | Connector setup and plan limits in both tools; check every slide before export |
How to Create an Instagram Carousel in Canva From ChatGPT's Text
Canva is where most people turn the table into slides. These steps combine Canva's Design School guide to carousels, last updated on October 8, 2026, with the prompts above.
- Step 1
Finish the Text in the Chat First
Run prompt 0 and the carousel prompt you need, edit the table in the chat and move to Canva only when every headline is final. Keep the Visual column, so you know which screenshot or photo goes on each slide.
- Step 2
Start From a Carousel Template at 1080 x 1350
Search Canva for Carousel and choose a template whose structure matches your outline, not just its look. Canva's guide gives 1080 x 1350 for the vertical Instagram feed. Add or delete pages until the count matches your table, and remove any hidden extra slides the template keeps at the end.
- Step 3
Paste One Row per Page
Copy each headline and body line into the matching text boxes. To swap the template's photos, tap an image, choose Replace, then Replace multiple to fill every placeholder in one pass.
- Step 4
Set the Font Once for Every Slide
Tap a text box, open Font, pick your brand font and choose Change all, which applies it across the whole design. Set your brand colors the same way, so slide 6 looks like slide 1.
- Step 5
Check the Order in Grid View
On a phone, pinch the screen to see every page at once and drag slides into a new order. Read from the cover to the last slide and delete any slide that does not move the story forward.
- Step 6
Export PNG or Share Directly
Choose Export, then PNG for picture carousels or MP4 if a slide holds video. You can also share straight to Instagram after connecting your account the first time.
How to Make Several Carousels at Once With Canva Bulk Create
If you post a carousel every week in the same layout, Canva's Bulk Create can fill a whole multi page carousel from one spreadsheet row. Canva's help page says each column is a data field, each row makes one version of the design, and on a multi page design you connect fields on each page, up to 150 fields. So after the table, ask ChatGPT: "Return this carousel as one CSV row with the columns cover headline, cover subline, slide 2 headline, slide 2 body and so on to the last slide."
Ask for four carousels in the same chat and you get four rows, a month of Thursdays. In Canva on desktop, open Bulk create from the Apps panel, upload the CSV, let Canva match the fields or drag each field onto its text box, preview every version and create them. Canva lists Bulk Create for Pro, Teams and its other plans above Free. Image links from cloud storage are read as plain text, so add screenshots in Canva after the words are in.
ChatGPT Image Prompts for Carousel Slides
If you want ChatGPT to draw the slides, the prompt has to carry the design rules on every turn. These four are separate from the 25 text prompts and work one slide at a time. Through OpenAI's API, the image generation guide also accepts custom sizes whose edges are multiples of 16, so 1088 x 1360 gives an exact 4:5 that you scale to 1080 x 1350.
Image Prompt A. Lock the Style Before Any Slide
Prompt: "Before you make an image, write a style sheet for this carousel that you will repeat word for word in every image prompt: background color as a hex code, one font style in words, text color, where the headline sits, margins and what never appears. Portrait, 4:5. Show me the style sheet, not an image." What it produces: a fixed description to paste into each slide request, the most dependable way to keep slide 5 looking like slide 1.
Image Prompt B. The Cover Slide
Prompt: "Using the style sheet, make slide 1. Headline, exactly: [headline]. Subline, exactly: [subline]. Spell every word as written, add no other text and keep all text inside the middle 80 percent of the width." What it produces: a cover whose words survive the profile grid crop. Check every letter; OpenAI's guide still names precise text placement as a weak point.
Image Prompt C. A Content Slide That Matches
Prompt: "Same style sheet, slide [number] of [total]. Headline, exactly: [headline]. Body, exactly: [body]. Same layout as the previous slide, only the words change. A small page number in the bottom right." What it produces: the next slide in the series. If the look drifts, paste the style sheet again instead of describing the change.
Image Prompt D. A Background Without Text
Prompt: "Using the style sheet, make a background for the content slides with no text at all: the color, one quiet shape in a top corner and an empty area for a headline and three lines of body." What it produces: a plain background to drop into Canva or Keynote, where you type the words yourself. For text heavy carousels, a generated background with real type gives the cleanest result.
Claude Carousel Prompts: Using the Same Library in Claude
Every prompt on this page works in Claude without changes. Tell Claude the slide count, the word limits and the table columns once, at the start, and refer back to them if a later answer drifts. In a Claude Project, put prompt 0 in the project instructions so every chat in the project starts with the same rules.
Connecting a design tool differs by plan. Anthropic's guide to custom connectors says custom connectors using remote MCP are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with Free limited to one. OpenAI's help article on custom MCP servers says custom MCP connections and full MCP support, write actions included, are for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise or Edu customers on the web, and on Business only admins and owners can add them.
In both assistants, ask for the table first, edit it, and only then ask for designs. Changing a word in a table costs nothing; changing it on a designed slide costs another round.
A Claude Carousel Skill Built From These Prompts
People search for a ready Claude carousel skill, and on October 16, 2026 Anthropic's public skills repository has none. It holds skills such as brand guidelines, canvas design and a skill creator, but nothing for carousels. Writing your own is quick, because prompt 0 is most of a skill already.
Anthropic's guide to creating custom skills says a skill is a folder with a skill.md file that opens with a name of up to 64 characters and a description of up to 200, which Claude reads to decide when to use it. For carousels the description can say: "Use when asked to write an Instagram or LinkedIn carousel, a slide outline or carousel captions." The body holds the rules from prompt 0, the table with Slide, Headline, Body and Visual columns, and the checks from prompts 23 and 24.
The guide also recommends example inputs and outputs, so paste one of your own best carousels as the example, or the Streakly table above. A reference file with your brand words and banned phrases can sit in the same folder, mentioned in skill.md so Claude knows when to open it. Zip the folder with the skill folder at the root, upload it and switch it on under Customize, Skills, with code execution on. The wider setup, with other social media skills, is in Claude for social media.
Can Claude Design Make an Instagram Carousel?
Claude Design is Anthropic's visual tool, released as a research preview on April 17, 2026. Anthropic's announcement lists social media assets among what it makes, puts it on the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans and names Canva, PDF, PPTX and HTML among the exports. During setup it builds a design system from your design files or codebase, so later work picks up your colors and type. Our guide to Claude Design for social media walks through a carousel from start to export.
For a carousel that makes it a middle route between image generation and a template. Paste the table from any prompt here, ask for one 1080 x 1350 frame per row in your design system, then export to Canva for final edits. As with every route, read each slide's text before you post.
How to Post a Carousel on Instagram Once the Slides Are Ready
Based on Instagram's help page on carousels, with the check worth doing at each step.
- Step 1
Check the Files
Same size for every slide, 1080 pixels wide, numbered in order. A slide of a different shape is cropped to the orientation of the whole post.
- Step 2
Select Up to 20 Slides
Choose Create, then Post, and select multiple photos. Drag to reorder before you continue, then pick portrait once for all slides.
- Step 3
Add Alt Text and the Caption
Open Accessibility to write alt text per photo, paste the caption with its five hashtags, and tag people on the slides where they appear. One caption and one location cover the whole post.
- Step 4
Share and Check the Grid
Open your profile and look at the cover at 3:4. If text is cut, Planoly's grid guide describes Adjust Preview in the post's three dot menu. You can reorder or remove slides later but not add new ones.
Why Is My Instagram Carousel Post Not Working?
Most carousel problems come from a few rules, and each has a fix. Slides look cropped: one orientation applies to the whole post, per Instagram's carousel page, so a square slide among portrait ones is cut to fit. Export every slide at the same size.
You forgot a slide. After sharing you can reorder and remove slides and edit the caption and tags, but you cannot add photos or videos. Delete the post and share it again, ideally within minutes. The upload stalls: Instagram warns that posts with several videos take longer, so use a steady connection or turn a video slide into a still. A video slide is missing from the Reels tab: that is expected, since videos inside a carousel are not treated as Reels.
A scheduling tool refuses it. Publishing tools go through Meta's API, which takes up to 10 items and JPEG pictures between 4:5 and 1.91:1, per Meta's media reference. A 3:4 slide, a PNG or an eleventh slide fails there even though the app takes it. The words are hard to read on a phone: run prompt 23 to cut them, then check the cover at 3:4 on your profile.
Instagram Carousel Tips Before You Post
A last pass over the designed slides. None of these need a new prompt.
One Promise on the Cover
Name a result the reader can picture, and keep the headline inside the area the 3:4 grid crop leaves.
One Idea per Slide
If a slide needs two headlines, it is two slides. Canva's carousel guide makes the same point: when too much competes on one slide, people scroll past.
Same Layout, Different Words
Keep the headline position, margins and font identical on every middle slide, so the eye only reads what changed.
Show How Far Along They Are
A small page number such as 3 of 7 tells readers how much is left before the end.
A Last Slide Worth Saving
A recap or checklist is the slide people come back to after saving, so end on one.
A Caption the Slides Do Not Repeat
One caption covers the whole post. Use it for context, such as why you made the carousel, and keep to five hashtags.
Read It on a Phone
Look at every slide on a phone at arm's length before sharing. If you have to squint, cut words.
Do Carousels Still Work on Instagram in 2026?
In the largest public study this year, yes. Buffer's analysis of content formats, published in March 2026, found Instagram carousels had a median engagement rate of 6.9% of reach, the highest of any format, ahead of single images at 4.4% and Reels at 3.3%. That measures how people react once they see a post, not how many see it, so carousels suit what you want followers to save: tutorials, checklists and walkthroughs.
For a wider plan covering Reels, Stories and profile setup, read how to promote an app on Instagram. For single image posts, see the Instagram post generator. For carousel structures written out slide by slide, the LinkedIn carousel examples translate to Instagram once you resize the pages.
Ask Claude or ChatGPT to Design the Carousel in Your App's Brand With Spreadcast
If the carousel is for an app, Spreadcast can do the design step inside the chat. It runs an MCP server at spreadcast.app/api/mcp. Add it to Claude or ChatGPT as a custom connector, sign in, and ask, for example: "Using Spreadcast, design a 6 slide carousel for Streakly about the new rest day setting, write the Instagram caption and save it as a draft."
The assistant designs a carousel of 3 to 8 slides at 1080 x 1350 in your app's brand kit: your colors, fonts and logo, a cover, real screenshots of your app in an iPhone frame, and a last slide that sends people to the app. It writes the caption in your brand's voice for each network you connected, from Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram and Discord, plus YouTube for video posts, and saves the post as a draft, where you see the slides before anything goes out. You can plan the slide text with the prompts above and paste it in as the brief.
Drafts work on every Spreadcast plan. Scheduling and publishing need Pro, $29 a month, and permission on the consent screen, where you choose Make Drafts or Make and Publish. A carousel published to Instagram goes out as one carousel post through Instagram's publishing API, whose 10 slide limit the 8 slide maximum always fits. In Claude this works on every plan; in ChatGPT it needs a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace. Setup is on the MCP page, plans on the pricing page, and step by step guides in schedule social media posts with Claude and with ChatGPT.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best ChatGPT prompt for an Instagram carousel?
One that sets the structure before the topic: the number of slides, a word limit per slide, one idea per slide, a cover that makes a promise and a last slide with one request, returned as a table. Prompt 0 on this page does that; paste it first, then ask for the carousel you need.
Can ChatGPT make an Instagram carousel?
It can write the whole carousel and generate slide images, but generated images often get text wrong and drift in style between slides. For text slides, ask ChatGPT for a table or CSV and put the words into a template in Canva or another design tool, or connect a design tool so the assistant fills it.
What size should Instagram carousel slides be in 2026?
1080 x 1350 pixels, a 4:5 portrait. The app also keeps 3:4 (1080 x 1440), according to Instagram's image resolution page, but scheduling tools follow Meta's developer reference, which stops at 4:5. The profile grid crops covers to 3:4, so keep text away from the side edges.
How many slides can an Instagram carousel have?
Up to 20 photos and videos when you post from the app, per Instagram's carousel help page. Posts published through Meta's API, which scheduling tools use, are limited to 10. Five to ten slides is enough for most topics.
Do these prompts work in Claude?
Yes, unchanged. Paste the context prompt once at the start of the chat, or put it in a Claude Project's instructions so every chat in the project starts with the same carousel rules.
How many hashtags should an Instagram carousel caption have?
At most five. The Instagram Help Center says you can use up to 5 tags on a post. Prompt 20 picks two broad tags, two specific ones and one for your own account or series.
