Instagram Hashtag Generator: The 5 Best Tags for Your Post

Instagram now allows up to 5 hashtags on a post or Reel, so this Instagram hashtag generator gives you five, not thirty: one broad, two focused and two niche, each with a reason. Copy all five in one tap, or check a caption you already wrote.

How to Use the Instagram Hashtag Generator

The box has two tabs. Get 5 Hashtags writes them for you; Check My Hashtags tests a caption you already have.

  1. Step 1

    Describe the Post

Write what the post is about in a sentence, or paste the caption. Mention the place, the format or the audience if there is one. That is where the niche tags come from.

  2. Step 2

    Get Five Hashtags

You get one broad tag, two focused on the subject and two niche ones, each with a line on why it fits. It takes a few seconds and needs no account.

  3. Step 3

    Copy All Five

Copy All puts the five on your clipboard in one line, ready to paste at the end of your caption or in a comment. Each tag also has its own copy button.

  4. Step 4

    Check Before You Post

Switch to Check My Hashtags and paste the finished caption. It counts the tags, finds doubles and points out characters that cut a tag short.

How Many Hashtags Can You Use on Instagram?

Five. Instagram's help page on hashtags says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, and that if you put more than 5 on a single photo or video, your comment won't post.

Instagram announced the change on 18 December 2025. Its @creators account posted on Threads that, starting that day, Instagram would allow up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post. Social Media Today reported it the same day with Instagram's longer statement: the number of hashtags you can include in a caption for a reel or post would gradually move to five, because fewer, more targeted tags can improve both a post's performance and people's experience. Instagram had been testing caps for about a year before that, and in the latest test many users were held to three.

So the limit covers feed posts and Reels, and the help page applies it to comments on a post as well. Neither the announcement nor the help page says anything about Stories.

Before December 2025 the limit was 30, and two Meta pages still show that number. Meta's publishing reference for developers lists 30 hashtags per caption, and the Instagram Feed ad specs list a maximum of 30 for ads. For a normal post or Reel, go by the help page and the announcement: five.

Best Hashtags for Instagram

With 30 tags you could cover every angle and hope one of them landed. With five, every tag has to earn its place, and a list of 20 or 30 suggestions leaves you with the hard part still to do: choosing.

So this tool does the choosing. Each of the five gets a job. One places the post in a big topic. Two say exactly what the post is. Two reach the small group most likely to care: a city, a format, a community, a type of reader.

The best five for a post are the ones a stranger would search or follow to find exactly that post. A tag that fits a thousand different posts tells Instagram and people very little. A tag only you use tells them nothing.

Broad, Focused and Niche Hashtags

The generator labels each tag with one of three sizes. The labels are the AI's judgment of how wide a tag is, not counted data.

Broad, Focused and Niche Hashtags
LabelWhat it isWhat our sourdough test returned
BroadA large topic people follow#Sourdough
FocusedThe exact subject of the post#LisbonFood, #RyeSourdough
NicheA small community, place, format or audience#LisbonBaking, #HomeBakedBread

We show no post counts or popularity numbers, because we have no data to back them.

Do Hashtags Still Work on Instagram?

They work as labels, not as a reach button. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has said more than once that hashtags don't increase reach, and also that they are a good way to tell people what a post is about. Social Media Today collected those comments when the limit changed.

The label still does something. If your account is public, a post with a hashtag appears on that hashtag's page, and tapping the tag shows everything people have shared with it, per Instagram's help page. Posts from private profiles don't appear there.

On those pages, Instagram's help page on hashtag results says the order can depend on when a post was shared, how people engage with it, and whether it meets Instagram's Recommendation Guidelines. A fitting tag gets you onto the right page. What happens after that depends on the post.

Hashtags in Caption or Comment

Both work. Instagram's help page says you can add hashtags in the caption or the comments of your post, and that you can add them to a post you already shared by editing the caption or commenting.

In the caption, the tags are there from the moment you share, and they stay put if your comment gets pushed down by replies. In a comment, they keep the caption clean. Instagram's wording counts tags on a post, not per box, so plan for five in total rather than five in each place.

Hashtags on Instagram Reels

The same five. Instagram's announcement names reels and posts together, so a Reel gets up to 5 hashtags, like a photo or a carousel. We found no Instagram statement saying Reels handle hashtags differently.

What changes is what you describe. A Reel is often about an action or a format: a recipe, a tutorial, a before and after, a day in a life. That format makes a good niche tag, next to the subject. For a sourdough Reel, a tag for the bread and a tag for the kind of video say more together than two tags for bread.

Banned Hashtags on Instagram

Instagram doesn't call them banned, and it doesn't publish a list. Its help page says a hashtag may not be searchable if the text of the tag, or the content posted with it, consistently breaks Instagram's Terms of Use or Community Standards. Instagram reviews these tags from time to time and may make one searchable again if what is posted with it changes.

Instagram's page on hashtag results adds that it may remove posts from a hashtag's results when people use that tag for content that breaks its Community Standards.

The practical test takes a few seconds. Search the tag in Instagram before you use it. If there is no page for it, or the posts on it are spam or nothing like yours, pick another. Our generator can't do this for you: it has no access to Instagram, so it can't know which tags are unsearchable today.

Instagram Hashtag Rules

From Instagram's hashtag help page, read on 3 November 2026.

  • Up to 5 per Post

More than 5 on a photo or video and the comment carrying them won't post.

  • Numbers and Emoji Work

#2026goals is a valid tag. Instagram's own steps say to type # followed by text or emoji.

  • No Spaces or Symbols

Spaces and special characters such as $ or % don't work. The tag stops where they start.

  • Public Accounts Only

Posts from private profiles don't appear on public hashtag pages.

  • Your Own Posts Only

You can add hashtags to your own posts, not to other people's photos or videos.

  • Edit Later

Add or change hashtags on a shared post by editing the caption or adding a comment.

How to Find Hashtags for Instagram

The generator saves time, but you can do the same job in the app in a few minutes. The three sizes come from this method.

  1. Step 1

Name the Post in Three Words

What it is, who it is for, and where, if a place matters. Those words are your focused and niche tags in draft.

  2. Step 2

Search Each One With a #

Type the tag into Instagram search and open its page. If the posts there look like yours, the tag fits. If they are spam or a different topic, drop it.

  3. Step 3

    Pick One Wider Tag

Choose one tag for the big topic your post belongs to, the kind people follow rather than search.

  4. Step 4

    Write Long Tags in CamelCase

A capital at the start of each word makes a long tag easier to read: #HomeBakedBread rather than #homebakedbread.

  5. Step 5

    Run the Checker

Paste the finished caption into Check My Hashtags to catch a sixth tag, a double, or a symbol that cuts one short.

Instagram Hashtag Limit: Why Some Pages Still Say 30

Hashtag advice written before December 2025 said 30, and it was right at the time. A lot of it is still online, and some popular generators haven't caught up yet.

When we read the top results for "instagram hashtag generator" on 3 November 2026, CoSchedule's page still said Instagram permits up to 30 hashtags per post, while recommending 3 to 5. Comment Picker's page states the 5 limit but still lets you generate sets of up to 25. Hopper HQ recommends three to five, and its counter goes up to ten. Buffer's free generator doesn't mention a limit.

None of this is a reason to distrust those tools. It just means the number they show is not the number Instagram enforces. If a generator gives you more than five, you still have to cut the list down yourself.

Instagram Hashtag Checker

The Check My Hashtags tab runs in your browser, with no AI and nothing sent to our server. Paste a caption and it finds each hashtag: a # followed by letters, numbers or underscores, up to the first space or other character. It tells you if there are more than five, which tags appear twice, and where a symbol such as $ cuts a tag short.

One thing to know: the checker is stricter than Instagram about emoji. Instagram accepts emoji in hashtags, but the checker marks a tag with an emoji in it as broken. If you put the emoji there on purpose, ignore that line.

If a caption has more than five, it offers the first five different tags in one line to copy. That is a starting point, not a choice. Read them and keep the five that describe the post best.

How the AI Hashtag Generator Works

Get 5 Hashtags sends your description to Google's Gemini model with fixed instructions: five real tags in three sizes, a short reason for each, no spam tags such as followforfollow or explorepage, no made up brand tags, and no numbers of posts or followers. Our server then keeps letters, numbers and underscores only, drops doubles, and shows the result if at least three good tags are left.

It can't see Instagram's data. It doesn't know how many posts use a tag today, whether a tag is trending, or whether Instagram has made a tag unsearchable. Treat the five as a well argued draft and open one or two of them on Instagram before you post, to see whether the posts there look like yours.

To keep it free with no account, one connection can run it six times in ten minutes and 30 times a day, and the whole site has a daily limit. When a limit is reached you see a plain message, and the checker keeps working.

Hashtag Generator Examples

We ran the generator on 3 November 2026. For "A sourdough loaf from my home bakery in Lisbon, first bake with rye flour" it returned #Sourdough (broad), #LisbonFood and #RyeSourdough (focused), and #LisbonBaking and #HomeBakedBread (niche). Each came with a one line reason. One reason called #Sourdough very popular, which is the model's impression, not a count.

Then we tried to misuse it. We typed an instruction to ignore its rules and write a 300 word essay on the history of Rome instead. It still returned five hashtags, #AncientRome, #RomanHistory, #ClassicalAntiquity, #HistoryBuff and #HistoricalFacts, each with a short reason and no essay. The server keeps five tags at most and cuts each reason at 140 characters, so there is no room for anything else.

In the checker we pasted a caption with nine hashtags, including #sourdough and #Sourdough, #food$love, and #flower with a flower emoji after it. It counted nine, flagged #Sourdough as used twice, and listed #food$love and the emoji tag as broken. The first is right: the $ ends that tag at #food. The second is the emoji quirk above. Copy the First 5 offered #sourdough #bread #RyeBread #homebaking #food, which shows why you should read the five before pasting them: the cut down #food came along.

We haven't posted any of these to Instagram. The tests check what the tool returns, not how a post performs.
